Harper is not always a good judge of character, appointing Duffy,Wallin, and the token Indian was such a huge mistake, you have to wonder if Harper was temporarily deranged,or just star struck.

Ontario will face increasing sanctions from the credit markets and will soon be spending most of their taxes on servicing interest payments. The only way to bail them out is federal money and more debt at the federal level. Before all this happens, we need a very credible entity to start putting the plan in place to get out of this thing. If the NDP and Libs team up, all h@ll will break loose and we need an exit plan.

Members of the commentariat — both the professionals and the dilettantes — fault PM Harper for choosing Mike Duffy, Pamela Wallin, and Patrick Brazeau as senators, saying it shows poor judgment on his part. Ascribing that trio’s failings to the PM or anyone else is unfair, IMO. Up until their appointment, those three were renowned and admired public figures, whose solid reputations most likely played a role in the PM’s considerations of their candidacy. If they failed to live up to their reputation, that is their own doing, not the PM’s. I fail to see why their appointment is described as the PM’s bad judgment. Is the same criticism directed at the CBC bigwigs who hired Jian Gomeshi? At the PM who appointed Liberal Senator Mac Harb?
Although I’m loath to blame “the system” because that too diminishes the importance of personal responsibility, I cannot help thinking that the perks offered in many jobs, be it in the public or private realm, are far too generous and ripe for abuse. Human nature being what it is, I’d be willing to bet that most people, given the choice between an expensive wine or a bottle of plonk, would choose the former if it were “expensible”. Cut out the possibility of “expensing” and you cut out the temptation to make inappropriate claims.

No question the MSM wants to make Wallin and Duffy the centre point of the election campaign. One fly in that ointment, however: the fraud trial of LIBERAL senator Mac Harb (old Chretien fart-catcher & bagman) starts up in August, which is much, much, closer to the election. We’ll have to do what we can to make sure the media focuses just as much on that trial as o this one, as Harb was a far more egregious trougher than Wallin and Duffy put together. Interestingly, though, no one seems to have ever asked where Harb got the CAD 320,000 or so to repay his bogus expenses. Perhaps that will come out in his trial.
ALSO: the doubling of TSFA contribution limits is the best thing the Government has done for the beleaguered tax payer since the invention of sliced bread. The Tory campaign should focus on that: it’s a good enough thing that, if the electorate has even a smidgen of sentience, they should give harper another majority.
All I can say is that if The Shiny Pony wins, I’m moving to Michigan.
Duffy was known to have lobbied every PM from Mulroney to Harper to get his snout into the trough. He made no secret of the fact he wanted IN!
Wallin DID have a sterling reputation, Harper couldn’t really be faulted with that one,but with Brazeau, he should have had the guy checked out more closely.
Why was Brazeau rewarded with a lottery win at age 40? He may have supported some of Harper’s ideas on the Indian Act, but seems to have accomplished little as head of the C.A.P. Maybe that’s an impossibility,though.
Whatever,Harper appointed them, he wears it. He could have appointed some real Canadians from outside the Canadian elites, but chose instead to appoint “stars”. perhaps someone in the PMO should have exercised some “sober second thought” before these appointments were made.
The media is having a field day,just watched noon news on all 3 networks, you’d think Duffy had committed high treason, all three TV networks are frothing in ecstasy.

I disagree with your contention that “Harper wears it”. Should every Human Resources person or head hunter be held responsible for every alleged misdeed of the people they had a hand in hiring? Not in my view. Once hired or appointed, each individual performs either well or poorly in that particular environment. If that environment does not have clearly defined rules, with stringent overview, some may choose to take advantage. Perhaps PM Harper’s mistake was to initially express his opinion on those inappropriate expense claims. It might have been better if he had simply called in the Auditor General and let him unravel all the threads, without venturing an opinion.
But I still wonder why the Senate suddenly became the focus of Robert Fife’s “investigative journalism”. Having worked in Ottawa for so long, surely Fife must have seen or heard about Liberal senators making the same kind of expense claims as Mike Duffy, claims they may not have been entitled to. Was it professional vengeance of some kind, going after two former colleagues? Or was it simply to make “Harper wear it”, as you say?
Ontario has purposely allowed itself to go financially drunk to the point of penury. How else to steal the oil money from Alberta & saskatchewan in transfer payments, while destroying the middle class there.
