A day after the federal government unveiled its new retaliatory measures against the US amid the trade war, NDP Leader Avi Lewis is calling on the Liberals to tax energy and critical mineral exports to the US.
There has been growing momentum across the political spectrum behind the idea of using Canadian exports as leverage in the dispute. In recent days, several politicians including Jean Chrétien, Jason Kenney, and David Eby have called on the Carney government to impose or consider imposing an export tax as an option for responding to US tariffs.
The Trump administration is in talks with Venezuela’s interim government about taking an ownership stake in the South American country’s enormous oil resources, two U.S. officials tell Axios.
Why it matters: The historic deal would more than double U.S. oil reserves by drawing from a country that has the world’s largest proven reserves.
August 28th.

Funny how an export tax is disasterous – but carbon taxes aren’t – apparently they are just yummy. Danielle must think so because happily jumped in bed with Carney and validated the whole Climate Change fraud by signing the MOU, and also supports net zero 2050.
And validating the climate change fraud opens the door to putting a carbon rating on every single good and service, so when we are given our monthly carbon allowances, are usage can be tracked – via Digital ID and CBDCs.
Heres how it will work – Avery Dennison already has 30 billion items with carbon tracking.

Agreed. But what’s with Jason Kenney? Has he joined the dark side?
Kenney always was a CINO.
Yes, DB, he was and is.
Jason Kenney, the lying Jesuit (though I repeat myself) was always a socialist masquerading as a conservative. He was Alberta’s Joe Clark. Just as Clark split the vote on the right with the actual conservatives, the Reform Party, homosexual Kenney did the same with the Wildrose.
Just like Carney, he bribed members from the Wildrose to join with him, and shortly after they did he purged them.
Kenney was always a plant, and when called sprung into action. All it took was for him to drive a blue truck and for the CBC to call him a conservative, and he was given the mantle. Sadly far too many voters don’t do any research themselves and continue to trust some things the state-controlled media says.
You tax imports, not exports.
Idiots
You can tax imports and exports. One’s called an import tariff, the other an export tarrif.
But just as the importer pays an import tariff, the exporter pays an export tariff. In short, Canadians pay for all tariffs imposed by the Canadian government.
Alberta – 160 billion barrels of reserves
Venezuela – 300 billion barrels of reserves
Canada has leverage? Well maybe in potash and uranium.
I never used the word leverage.
Never go ful crum.
Yep, every barrel sold comes with carbon taxes already. I would like to hear the screaming from the East if we just stopped pumping altogether. After all, that’s what they keep saying we need to do for the planet or something.
Canada’s gonna need a bigger pipeline heading E-W
Well, they don’t even have one going east/west, let alone a bigger one….
It will never happen, this is a country of paralysis by analysis.
At this time where it would be advantageous for nefarious politicians to have one of those to strategically abuse, none exists. These same politicians have made it a career fighting AGAINST pipelines. SMH.
These are ideological Progs. Deep down, they still hate oil and pipelines and are climate change fanatics. But their Terminal TDS has blinded their belief system, and turned into raging hate filled Progs, to be anti-Trump in every way, even to their own well being.
That’s Chinada today.
No pipelines will be built, anywhere here, the SmithCarney project is just a PR exercise, designed only to cynically stop the separatist forces. Im 63, and don’t expect this to be built in the rest of my lifetime, 25 years or so. Anyone banking on it, is hallucinating on HOPIUM and smoking too much reefer.
Chinada won’t do anything unless China tells the Liberals to do it. Until then, this country is a basketcase. Canada is the unreliable, lazy younger brother that never wants to put in a days work, is always broke and trying to borrow money, while getting drunk more often than they should.
Often called a LOSER.
L – If Mark Carney levies an export tax or interferes with Alberta oil revenue. Danielle Smith would explain to Albertans the consequences. The majority of Albertans would support Independence and the vote for it would happen fast. Alberta would have a Keystone pipeline south and an another one to west to the U.S. coas, in record time. Japan and South Korea would be overjoyed.
Alberta would have: $20-30 billion no longer lost to eastern Canada, but would finance a true Sovereign wealth fund, plus the billions Ottawa skims off the top for transfer transferring their own money for things e.i. Health, Education,Provincial policing et al. In mass: “We should have done this decades earlier!” Budget deficits would soon be distant memory, as would federal income tax and soon Alberta income tax could be a flat 10% shrinking to zero in short order.
Did I mention crime would be cut in half, too?
Saskatchewan pay attention… there is no reason to have a budget deficit ever again.
Yup. Doing that would be a huge boost to the independence movement. I think Carney realizes that.
Premier Smith has already put her thumb on the scale by declaring for Canada.
I would be surprised if the vote isn’t diddled in more ways.
Your selected Central Banker’s job was to try and create turmoil in the U.S. (and continue stripping you of your wealth, because peasants don’t need possessions to be happy and you’ve got MAID for when you’re not).
This is an attempt at creating said turmoil by panicking the American public that “the end is near, gas prices will skyrocket on everything without the magical Canadian oil — and probably potash too, since most people don’t know that much about it and it will be easy to make them think no more food — unless you listen to your Pilsbury Doug boy and vote Democrat”.
There you have it, that’s probably what it’s about. I’m honestly hoping the vile hirelings in charge of your government go for it (ALL OF THEM! every Team has played on the field, probably since John Turner, maybe perhaps prior).
By the way: do you know where your pensions are getting invested? Speaking of Dougie Fresh and his province. Wonder how secure it’s going to be? After all, your Governor Markie has a bit of a history.
“Pilsbury Doug Boy.”
That there is meme gold.
I am a luditte, but some meme guy will make it happen.
Maybe also do Ford as “Michigan Man”…oops… I meant Michelin, but if the Freudian Fits….
PS. unknown jane, how is it that you grok Canada more accurately and nuanced than most Canucks around here?
You must live in a border state.
Dougie Fresh…LMAO. Nice.
Anyone want to tell me why i shouldn’t vote to leave this country?!
Well MM, I can give you lots of reasons why we need to leave this has been country.
Option 2 on 19 October!!!
“Option 2 on 19 October!!!”
For sure.
Every other question on the referendum is settled if Alberta becomes independent.
Blind rage will be the marxist morons undoing;
… threatening to restrict Alberta oil to the US essentially means closing the taps on Enbridge Line 5
upstream from the US, which is also upstream from Ontario & Quebec’s oil supply.
Please. Do it.
They won’t, but Trump could close the taps before the pipeline re-enters eastern Canada.
In 2025, imports from the U.S. represented approx 73% of all crude oil imports. New Brunswick, Québec, and Ontario account for most of the U.S. crude oil imports. The reversal of Line 9 in the 2010s has made Ontario and part of Québec completely dependent on crude oil transited through the U.S. As such, Ontario is completely reliant on U.S crude oil imports, while other provinces (Québec and New Brunswick) are also heavily reliant.
Ontario and Québec are the most dependent on U.S. natural gas imports. The natural gas is imported to Ontario and then flows into Québec. The TC Canadian Mainline connects Western Canada with Ontario, over Canadian territory, however, due to higher costs to transport natural gas on this system, Ontario has been growing its reliance on U.S. imports.

“ The Trump administration is in talks with Venezuela’s interim government about taking an ownership stake in the South American country’s enormous oil resources “
I really didn’t think the Venezuela thing could get any more awesome. I mean, it was cool enough how we just snatched that commie puke Maduro out of his bed in the middle of the night, pissing off every prog, lib, troon, NPR host, and mask wearer across the planet, and now Trump’s all like – yeah, you’re gonna sell us half your oil reserves too. I think the obvious next step here would be to just take out every wind turbine in North America, saying he’s doing it for birdwatchers and their feathered friends everywhere.
… pissing off every prog, lib, troon, NPR host, and mask wearer across the planet, and now Trump’s all like – yeah, you’re gonna sell us half your oil reserves too.
Not only do I amuse myself here on these pages … but you folks amuse the hell out of me too.
Kenji, we’ve got nothing to hide.

You’ve made me OBSESSED with the band to whom I never paid much attention. Even YouTube keeps serving me up a bunch of videos about … “The Story of Spirit”. Think I’ll watch one of them tonight.
Yes, I said that like it’s a good thing
I’m thinking of starting a Spirit tribute band. Probably called the Spirit Duplicators.
🙂
Is This Another Blow to Alberta?
Might be off topic but today President Trump announced a rollback of federal regulations on meat processing plants. Four companies dominate meat processing in the US. Ranchers and farmers will now be allowed to process their own meat products in smaller, regional plants cutting transport costs… This regulatory review is aimed at reducing & removing “burdensome” regulations imposed by USDA during the Biden administration.
USDA promises a major announcement Monday. Note: these Biden era regulations brought lower prices to producers and higher prices to consumers. Anecdotal evidence: 80/20 ground beef increased from average US$1.99# to US$5.99# between 2021 and today in the Chicago area.
Relevance: Alberta cattle production is 40% of Canada’s beef industry. A vital component of Alberta’s agribusiness. “In 2023, Canada exported approximately 75% if its beef and live cattle to the US accounting for C$6.7 billion in exports. This strong trade relationship is supported by a relatively tariff-free border…”
This action combined with the tariff wars will likely effect Canadian beef exports to the US and that isn’t good for anybody.
Canadians are so myopic and short-sighted. This presents all kinds of opportunities for producers and entrepreneurs to enter into the processing and distribution business. Canadians need to stop thinking like 12 year old transgender lesbians and develop some broad shoulders, courage and foresight.
I’ll counter that.
Less US demand means more Can beef here.
That *may* bring down beef prices here, which today are obscene.
Have a look down your meat cooler today, and notice the lack of Chuck and blade cuts, the cheap and tougher cuts of meat. Virtually non-existent, due to high prices. No doubt, ending up in the ground or stewing products.
More beef, more competition. Trump once again helping the people of the US AND the people of Canada.
Hurts producers? Cough, cough……consumers are tapped out. And yes, our own governments do deserve plenty of criticism, across the spectrum, making life hard on everybody needlessly, consumers, farmers, distribution and the like.
This country needs a full panic mode across the board, a wake up call, to how destructive and asinine our governments are. Only a true economic crisis will snap the hypnotic spell LibTard voters have been under, for too many years.
The problem is that just suggesting to cut off resources will have the forward thinking sharks in the Trump admin looking elsewhere. I predict American companies suddenly getting interested in foreign potash. It would have to be processed to a higher standard like Canada does, but that’s a snap for big money. Not only can you not hate the Canuck media enough; you can’t hate the Liberal/Woke Canadian majority enough. But, if things continue as they are, we are all in for a bad time of it. I am just thankful I live on the Canadian Prairie.
They’re already looking that way. I put up a post last night about a new potash processing plant under development that will handle imports from nations other than Canada and essentially cut the import shortfall (assuming the loss of Canadian supply) in half.
There is nothing Canada produces, in raw materials, that cannot be replaced from elsewhere.
Yes, crude oil, potash, raw minerals, and yes, even Uranium, can be outsourced from elsewhere.
Foreign countries would be more than happy to sell to the US, and welcome those US dollars in trade.
This fact is completely lost on every ElBoWZo Libtard and Mediot in Chinada.
They live in denial.
Can you imagine the economic nightmare for this country, if even half the value of resources are obtained elsewhere by the US. Maybe it needs to happen.
The majority of this country is hypnotized in a massive TDS delusion, that’s stronger than any fentanyl addiction.
Only Avi Lewis would still be happy with this outcome. UBI for all, sitting around, doing nothing, worshipping Mother Gaia, eating the bugs and sucking sprouted smoothies.
L – May I have 22 minutes of your time?
“Canadians are so cucked, so beta, so broken. They don’t even notice.”

its all there all laid out. the tentacles, players, methods and Canduhians, yes
cucked, beta and broken. this once glorious respected land of pioneers,

‘prime minister pogo stick’. grifters and traitors. informants filling up the
newly minted police state.
damn you Canaduh goddamn you.
If you are wondering why you didn’t get the job and another candidate did.
Isn’t something like 60% of Canadian GDP made up of oil and gas revenues to the USA?
Trump is profoundly uninterested in “negotiating” with Iran … because we’ve been kicking the living shit out of them … and they’re getting desperate. Too late. They had their chance but wanted to play tough guy and wait it out till the midterms …
then there’s Canada and their Carney barker
See above
Snow Mexico is now Irrelevant.
Trump just announced a deal with Venezuela that secures 65 billion barrels of oil reserves for the US.
https://www.cnbc.com/2026/08/28/trump-announces-deal-with-venezuela-to-secure-more-than-65-billion-barrels-of-oil-reserves.html
Venezuela produces about a fifth of the oil that Alberta does.
It will take many years to ramp up production, given how mismanaged their oil reserves are. The Venezuelan government pressured PDVSA to extract too much oil too fast. That damages reservoirs, and it can take a ton of time and money to repair them, if that’s even possible.
By the time production matches Alberta’s output — if it ever does — Trump will be long gone, and trade relations between the US and Canada will likely have normalized.
You really ARE a ‘do nothing’ conservative … aren’t you?
Is that the instruction you received from Beijing? Transmitted on your tooth filling?
Kenji wants to live in Trump World, where everything is promised and nothing is delivered. Six week wars turn into six month wars. Economic rocket ships stay on the ground. Inflation that will drop on day one not only don’t drop, but send gasoline prices soaring and where aluminum is half again as expensive as the rest of the world.
I prefer to live in reality land. Ramping up production in Venezuela will be a slow massive undertaking. And when it does happen, there will always be the risk of a new Bolivarian Revolution. It is, after all, South America.
“Inflation that will drop on day one not only don’t drop, but send gasoline prices soaring and where aluminum is half again as expensive as the rest of the world.”
Don’t drink and post, kids.
Pssst … Trump has prosecuted the crushing of the Iranian Terrorist Theocratic State Leadership to … PERFECTION! decisively-militarily then peacefully … diplomatically … he ‘Gave Peace a Chance’ … and now by economic strangulation. The man has used every tool at his disposal … systematically … and strategically … with essentially NO LOSS of American lives. He has carefully avoided mass misery on the Iranian people … you’re seeing NO Hamas-styled propaganda of children starving in the street … or cries of Iranian ‘genocide’. Yes, he could EASILY have wreaked immediate and total destruction on the Iranian people. Please read a history book.
Do you have ANY IDEA how devastating and heinous most wars have been throughout history? Trump has avoided ALL of that … while carefully and strategically lancing a boil on the world’s ass … that was festering into a metastasizing cancer. When all is said and done … the quality of life in the ME may actually become SO improved that all the wild eyed 6th century reprobates will leave Europe and N. America and actually … GO HOME … because Shia are no longer slaughtering Sunni at the flaffel stand or girls school.
History judges … not some douch’e who still believes in Obama’s “strategic absence” from the Middle East.
This was supposed to be a four week operation. Now you’re saying everything’s going to plan. You must think people are dumb.
The difference between you and I … is that I know how to listen to Trump … and to separate his intentional oversimplification at the start of his actions/negotiations as an opening gambit … vs … what he is actually DOING. Yeah, it’s a sales pitch. But the vehicle he’s selling is still a superb ride.
Again … it was the … strategic strategery … of Obama to … do nothing.
Superb ride, huh? Gasoline prices have gone up 33% since January. Aluminum and fertilizers are both suffering scarcities in the US. Was that in the plan?
You’re like the farmer that shoots a bullet into his barn, then paints a bulls eye around the hole.
The worldwide oil and gasoline prices will drop like a stone as soon as all of London’s laundered money no longer makes it into the IRGC pockets … the people of Iran finally rise up … and Iran surrenders. It’s coming a LOT sooner than you have in mind.
“I prefer to live in reality land.”
LOL…one of your funniest statements yet, second only to your ongoing “don’t drink and post, kids” mea culpas.
You fool no one.
I notice you almost never engage in the topic under discussion, but rather just insult and dismiss. I guess you find that comforting.
A wise and mature remark, coming from the guy who screams “Trump is a horse’s ass!” as he comes in his trousers. Thanks for the insight, Mr. Dignity!
PDVSA went on strike in 2002-2003, the brains in the company left after the Tascon List became known, (think of the Canadian Gov’t debanking the Freedom Truckers but on steroids) and production fell further as Schumberger, Baker Hughes, and Halliburton weren’t being paid by the Vzla gov’t and eventually left / were kicked out. The brains of PDVSA don’t exist anymore.
These oil service companies have the inside track to being at work there again, but the infrastructure and reservoirs are damaged, the locals are not the experts, and the export facilities are broken.
Maybe 5-10 years for production to truly ramp up.
In 2001 they produced about 3 million barrels, and thought they’d be exporting 5 million barrels by now, while they’re at about 1 now, with a broken country in every direction.
Don’t underestimate US ingenuity and dedication. Every Million barrels imported from Venezuela is a million less from Alberta, and that number will grow.
Yes, it’s a power play by the US, but, since Chinada is playing silly bugger, where, we can no longer build pipelines, and this country argues over pronouns and land acknowledgements, the US is moving on. They are playing the long game.
And still, every critic of Trump fails to understand his strategy. He distracts his opponents by volumes of opprobrium and unrelated nonsense, while continuing the real work quietly in the background. His greatest strength is gaming the outcomes and responding correctly.
Crazy Like A Fox.
This will turn out very badly for Chinada, but the powers that be will still be arguing over pronouns and hurtful words, while you’re herded onto the electric buses, from your Soviet style flat.
The US is preparing to disconnect Canada from its affairs.
Disconnect. Yes indeed.
“And still, every critic of Trump fails to understand his strategy. He distracts his opponents by volumes of opprobrium and unrelated nonsense, while continuing the real work quietly in the background. His greatest strength is gaming the outcomes and responding correctly.”
Absolutely. We keep telling that to his TDS-afflicted detractors here, and they keep pretending not to hear it.
Trump will be long gone but the oil he secured will be flowing, making Canada’s oil less attractive to the US.
If the US’s current foreign policy remains place on Venezuela, which is not a given. Some future president may view this deal as an overt act of economic and military imperialism — basically a resource grab — and renegotiate something less likely to cause a new Bolivarian Revolution.
“Some future president may view this deal as an overt act of economic and military imperialism — basically a resource grab —”
…and then he will remember what happened to Maduro, and quickly banish such thoughts from his head. Keep dreaming.
It’s Official: We Secured a Massive Oil Deal With Venezuela
https://townhall.com/news/mattvespa/2026/08/28/its-official-we-secured-a-massive-oil-deal-with-venezuela-n2682091
Alberta?
The USA has their work cut out for them in repairing Venezuela’s oilfields and oil export infrastructure.
Last year when Maduro was arrested, some of the Venezuela watchers noticed that Venezuela was already exporting at near to capacity of 1 million barrels per day. The electrical infrastructure is shot as well, they haven’t done any maintenance since year 2000 and it may take a decade to break through 3 mbpd. I doubt they’ll be exporting much more in the near future but whatever they can export may be sent to Texas refineries instead of China (Venezuela has a massive debt they owe to China, I have no idea if they’ll pay that down anytime, or ever) and keep in mind the Venezuela oil has a limited market, they won’t be shipping to Europe anytime soon.
There is room for Alberta’s oil in the market, but the pipeline to export that should be being built now, not maybe planned for building in 2-5 years for completion in 2036 …
Any reduction in oil available to China can be counted as a win.
I suspect Trump can easily encourage Venezuela to cease shipments to China on the premise that it is an appropriate response to China’s continued support of Iran.
If sanity had any credence in this world, the historic destruction of Venezuela’s economy by Socialist/Communist governance would provide a great object lesson for the DSA loons, but I fear there is little hope of that.
Trump is a builder-developer … it’s what he does. It’s what he knows. He’s got Chevron on board, and I’m sure Bechtel and every other American mobile construction and logistical outfit. Yeah, building and development takes time … restoration of everything the communists fudged up takes time … but it all starts with a plan. Trump is a planner.
As to another Bolivian-styled Revoluci’on? Che won’t be riding his motorcycle to the rescue this time round as he would easily be discombobulated and suctioned off his bike by America’s new tractor-beam technology. And if you haven’t noticed … Most of Latin America is getting DONE with Communist rule. Mass misery loses its appeal after a while.
And Trump is a negotiator… I am certain the Venezuelan people have just recently got a rather SHOCKING object lesson … via starvation … about the differences between American ‘Imperialism’ *snicker* and the corrupt empty promises and totalitarian authoritarianism of socialism. Gee … who do you want running your country? A muni bus driver? Or a successful builder-developer with the most bad ass military ever on the planet? Oh and the Oil Industry expertise par excellence?
I worked with PDVSA in 2011and I agree with Marc. Chavez fired all the competent PDVSA workers and replaced them with incompetent toadies. I worked with some workers who were very competent but had their hands tied by Chavez at al.
I don’t think the situation improved under Maduro.
Were you in Venezuela or as an export partner? I was in Anaco in Nov-Dec of 2006 and during the election, I recall “everything is broken” and yet it continued on for another 19 years…
Pipeline Online article…

In the ultimate irony, one might speculate that the revitalization of Venezuela’s oil industry will employ a LOT of Canadians.
Congrats Brian! On writing a measured and thoughtful piece … virtually devoid of TDS. I particularly enjoyed this quote …
What if Trump says to Alberta, “We no longer need your oil, but if you became a state, then we’ll take it all and build new pipelines for it, too?”
However we don’t “TAKE” things here in capitalist (mostly) America … we BUY them … we PAY for them. So the Oil Industry of Alberta will be getting PAID as part of the USA as well as protected.
But I’m curious … if the US is the only country that has heavy crude refining capacity … where will that Eastern pipeline be delivering the oil? And at what transport cost? Looking at a map … that’s a LONG pipeline … and I’m guessing it must traverse multiple Indian Reservations … with many ‘Chiefs’ who will demand new pickup trucks, snow machines, and HUGE curved big screen TV’s.
Dear PM Carney … you could have made a FAIR and improved Trade Deal. But now look what you’ve done. Guess you need a new meeting with Obama … or maybe HER and Kamalalala? But you’ll just wait till the midterms as Obama reassured you he has all the infrastructure in place to CHEAT the VOTE again. We’ll see … shan’t we?
What if Trump says to Alberta, “We no longer need your oil, but if you became a state, then we’ll take it all and build new pipelines for it, too?”
That would make Chris very, very happy
The rigs heading south this time will head turn right off the I-15 to the I-90 and head for the Port of Seattle where they will be shipped to Venezuela where they will be employed to great effect.
Skilled, innovative and hardworking oil workers, engineers and support staff (the kind of people hated by Soviet Canuckistan) will find ample opportunity.
Their best bet is to connect on American through DFW or through IAH on United.
Security to be provided by the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force

Canada’s slippery slide began with Trudea in 1968. Before he arrived, many of our politicians were combat veterans from WW2, and some were very good people. I had a substitute teacher in fifth grade who was a spitfire pilot during the battle of Britain. Oh, for the old days.
