The Sound Of Settled Science

Opening shots in the War on Antibiotics?

I therefore read with interest and anticipation a recent article in the New England Journal of Medicine with the title “Microbiota, Antibiotics, and Obesity.” The connection of antibiotics with obesity had not previously occurred to me; perhaps the real reason why so many people now have the appearance of beached whales was about to be revealed to me.
The Danish authors of the article start by telling us that the worldwide problem of growing obesity is more complex than commonly assumed, and that “dietary and genetic factors have but partial roles in the development of obesity.” But how partial is partial?

  1. When a person looses fat for every 10 Kg of fat 8.4 Kg is CO2 expelled from the lungs in breathing and the remaining 1.6 Kg is expelled as water as expelled body fluids (http://tinyurl.com/qyvtuhw). So humans sequester CO2 through weight gain. So eat up and be jovial.

  2. Less complex than formerly believed? Apparently I am the only one in the world who is overweight because they eat too much and sit on their ass all day. Everyone else seems to have an excuse.

  3. Food scolds like CSPI,PCRM, Ralph Nader,Jermi Rifkin Marion Nestly,Micheal Jacobson,PETA and nuts like Morgan Spurlock forcing their stupid diets upon us all americans would reject their idiotic ideas

  4. “Less complex than formerly believed? Apparently I am the only one in the world who is overweight because they eat too much and sit on their ass all day. Everyone else seems to have an excuse.”
Ahhhhhhhh. You do have an excuse. You just admitted it with your lifestyle. :):)

  5. On a more serious note, who benefits and makes the bucks from the research? Didn’t vaccinations cause autism? Oh wait. And note all the weasel words in the report; may, could, paltry. Well I may have sex with my hand and get it pregnant!! Where’s my research money? And that line is not meant to be funny.

  6. Wait, what about the simple concept..
These generations lived long enough to get fat.
Go back just 60 years and things were very different.
Just like the cancer “epidemic”.. well if you did not die of childhood illnesses or now preventable diseases, or any number of infections that these antibiotics cured,, well just maybe you get to become fat and comfortable and/or contract those illnesses that lie in wait for the aged.

  7. And another afterthought. Are not antibiotics only prescribed for TEN days max? So how do you get obese in ten days?
File this report with CAGW and other scams. ORRRRRRRRR. Maybe it only takes ten days to kill off enough brain cells that people lose the ability to think? More research money, please.

  8. Certainly the trillions of bacteria we have in our guts affect our weight gains. Much research is happening now in this area.

  9. get a grip you fool, there is a broad range of research going on as to “gut bacteria”. I don’t think this is a valid assessment, but that doesn’t mean such research is all phony.
On another note, sedentary life style and “fat” go hand in hand. People who claim gland trouble usually do have glad problems, just not the gland they think. It’s the one between their ears that causes them the most problem!

  10. Obesity is caused by gluttony. There … it’s that simple … if it were not so, there would be a lot more fat people in Africa, North Korea, Japan, India etc … where they are mostly quite thin and probably hungry. We had antibiotics for decades … when I looked recently at the ‘Woodstock” video from the late 60s, I saw no obese people in a crowd of a half a million. What changed?
I would guess the hand-helds coupled with the desk top and the game machines along with no exersize and crap food may have more do to with it than previously thought.

  11. And just where did I mention “gut bacteria”? Santa forget your reading glasses….again?

  12. Justthinkin start thinking. You mentioned anti biotics. Anti biotics kill off friendly gut bacteria as well as the bad bacteria. 10 days has nothing to do with the weight factor. Bacteria will control your weight. Kill them off, up goes the weight.

  13. Back a few years ago some idiots tried to get warning labels on Milk cartons over this so called Colon Cancer it was of course those jerks from PETA and its off shoot PCRM then CSPI tried to have warning lebels on salt both cases were rejected by the courts

  14. Transient event. Your gut flora will be back to normal after a few weeks of normal” eating. You won’t gain weight due to bacteria in that time, unless you pig out because you now feel better. Weight gain on a antibiotic diet (ie feedlot tetracycline regimes) is due to the body having to not to compete with the microflora for food utilization. Your body seeks homeostasis with its parasites – you eat for for everybody on board, then you have another helping for you. Fat you get…

  15. War of antibiotic: I noticed so many herbal stores in city of Toronto and bulk food in big malls sell very cheap all kind of powder can be used for make cake or make tea for relaxation. Mostly sellers are rusian jeiwish or middleeastern or chinneese or japaneese herbal. While some deseases like urinary tubercolouses and bedbugs bites in poor area need real professional labortory it is hard to find profssional doctor who can find main problems quickly obesity also lead to sleep apnea and snoring lead to stroke while food like rice in US has metal poision water used for wash rice then how grow vegterian agriculture meat and feed or water need to filter too. We live in poision linked society of what we eat as processed ffinished food is under question now ?

  16. In 1984 I heard Suzuki say during a speech he gave at the U of R about withholding modern medical treatments such as antibiotics as part of letting nature control human population. This study on antibiotics smells like the same agenda driven faux-science that’s been driving climate change policy for years. The monkeys won’t be satisfied until they achieve their goals of a global “Great Leap Forward”.
