Boko Haram as been quick to exploit the army’s low morale. After forcing government troops out of several towns and holding these areas for weeks at a time, militant leader Abubakar Shekau released a video proclaiming the establishment of a new caliphate in Nigeria’s northeast.
Sahara Reporters has translated parts of the video. Shekau praises his forces for their military victories and refutes the authority of the Nigerian state. “We are in an Islamic caliphate,” he boasts. “We have nothing to do with Nigeria. We don’t believe in this name.”
Shekau’s video includes footage of fleeing Nigerian soldiers and Boko Haram fighters sporting heavy weapons and armored personnel carriers.
Let us not forget that the Nigerian government wished to proceed vigorously against Boko Haram but was repeatedly
checked by the US State Dept.
This Islamic Caliphate is growing leaps and bounds.

If you read the late Sir John Keegan’s ‘A History of Warfare’ he wrote about the shocking success of Islam more than a thousand years ago. A violent desert cult from the Arabian peninsula swept across north Africa to the Atlantic and into Spain and across central Asia to the Chinese border, after several hundred years of total war it eradicated the Byzantines in a slaughter (aided by Europeans who sold them cannon technology), it was held back at great cost in southern France and at the gates of Vienna. Cultists who have no fear of death, who believe in an afterlife of endless feasting and rape, creates a terrible army that overwhelms the normal citizen soldier, conscripted and whipped into the front lines. Not much has changed, it’s not easy for the Nigerian or Syrian or Iraqi conventional forces to stand up against such fanatics.
In the mind of mayor Naheed Nenshi, it already does.

A cynic might tend to the theory that the local
Muslims running prov/city governments in Nigeria’s
nothern regions have already “taken out insurance”
with their local BH agents. Even the usual massive
thievery and incompetence common to rulers in that
country and general area would allow for at least
an occasional successful foray by their forces
against BH. Something which never seems to ever
occur for no apparent reason. Pakistan II?
