Raising beef for the American dinner table does far more damage to the environment than producing pork, poultry, eggs or dairy, a new study says.
Compared with the other animal proteins, beef produces five times more heat-trapping gases per calorie, puts out six times as much water-polluting nitrogen, takes 11 times more water for irrigation and uses 28 times the land, according to the study, published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Eshel calculates that the average American who switches from beef to pork would reduce the equivalent of 1,200 pounds of carbon dioxide a year, which is about nine days’ worth of the nation’s per capita greenhouse gas emissions. The EPA calculates that it is the same as the emissions from 61 gallons of gas or what comes out of the smokestack from burning 580 pounds of coal.

IF You substitute HUMANS for Cattle you have a justification for the total elimination of useless humans. The consumption of resources is part of the natural conversion (not destruction)from one state to another. If you eliminate Cattle & Humans the same resources will continue (naturally) to be converted to other forms of bio-mass, or consumed by other competing forms of the same food chain.

If green weenies gave up their puppies and pussies, CO2 emissions would probably drop far more than stopping eating beef. EVERYTHING we do and consume in our society has a carbon footprint (which is BS anyway) so isolating one aspect is shallow and hypocritical. It has long been known that the best conversion of plant nutrients to animal foodstuffs is with the smaller critters. Pigs better feed conversion than cattle, Turkeys better than pigs and chicken better than turkeys….less feed to maintainence more gain. Of course cattle alone convert grass and other cellulose….pigs and especially chicken compete with humans for the same feed.

All living creatures are composed of carbon, the amount of CO2 they give off in their lifetimes is exactly the amount that they consume.
Why don’t they put it in terms of the destruction of unicorn habitat or Leprechaun deaths? Those are more plausible than Man’s CO2 impacting the climate significantly.
I thought the “problem” with rising CO2 was the addition of ancient carbon, i.e., CO2 from carbon that had been sequestered in coal and oil for millions upon millions of years. And, given ancient carbon is the “problem” then burning trees and making ethanol from corn is okay because they contain “recent” carbon. However, cows produce recent CO2 too.
So what’s the problem? Per Seth, it’s about off setting things. You can eat beef or you can drive your gasoline powered car but you can’t do both because, you know, because off set and attaining balance …… or we could stop burning trees and corn to offset the cars, no wait ….. it’s all so confusing.

I don’t use the “sarc” tag on SDA as everyone here is used to my heavy handed sarcasm,maybe I should. I shot and ate hundreds of the little buggers when I was a kid living in Manitoba in the 1950’s, and wouldn’t wish their tough, stringy meat on anyone. Possibly the farm raised rabbits are more tender.
Keep on raising them cattle,and I’ll keep on buying the delicious meat,unless I get lucky and find a spike/fork bull moose this year.

i’m sure they are much more tender. Like veal calves, farm raised rabbits are kept in cages off the ground (to keep them from dying from roundworm infestation) and not allowed to move much. That’s why their meat is so much tastier.
That’s why I can’t understand the screaming about how pasture fed beef is so much better than grain fed beef. It’s leaner and has much less marbling. Also drier. Besides, the BLM has squashed that, as necessary grazing acreage for large animals is huge; most people can’t even comprehend how much forage a cow needs to eat(80-120lbs daily).
Also, I resent anyone telling me how to raise my animals. In a few moments I’m going to bring them a 2 big baskets of cauliflower leaves, potato peelings, cabbage leaves (from making sauerkraut), and my green bean plants that are done producing. Everyone should have bovine composters.
