Here’s a review on the HuffPo of the same. There’s little doubt that Jeff Daniels’ rant was written by a Leftist for a Leftist audience. However, if one were to look critically at what has destroyed so much in America – just read SDA for a week! – the blame mostly sits squarely with Leftists, their policies, and the institutions they’ve set up. Clearly they don’t see it that way but their reticence to admit failure – as has been observed recently with Obamacare – should not let them off the proverbial hook one iota.
The real problem is that the left doesn’t realize that it is their socialist policies that have caused the deterioration of American and they truly believe that more of their policies will solve our problems.
The GOP are just as culpable as the Dems. Both parties are big government, interventionist and reactive.
They frankly are the same party with slightly different spending priorities and thus only a fake democracy exist now. Down the rabbit hole it goes.
What is the point here? I’m lost.
7th in literacy? Wow, that’s horrible! Let’s just see how bad that is… oh, 99% is only good enough for 7th in the world. Is this really a problem? Look at the other stats and see how they stack up. Sure, the US is behind China, Korea, and Japan in Math but the difference isn’t that big and those countries have some really “interesting” ideas on education. Infant mortality? The US is 34th at 5.4/1000 births. Canada, with it’s 100% government funded medical care is 24th at 5.22/1000.
The stats used in the rant are all out of context and cherry picked.
I believe the point is that at one time leaders were responsible. Inspired a nation to achieve more. Had a moral compass. Earned respect.
Now they are just fodder for ridicule.
The final line “America is not the greatest country in the world anymore…”. That’s mission accomplished for leftists.

It is not one thing, it is many things. We were once
the undisputed world leader in science, technology,
medicine, industry, mining, energy production and
productivity.
We were the world leader in the production of consumer
electronics, making millions of TV sets, hi-fi systems,
you name it. Enter government at all levels, increasing
taxes. Add greedy unions, and a pinch of environmental
activists and unelected regulatory agencies. After a
while, the cheap Japanese electronics got better, while
we were taxing and regulating our domestic industries
into oblivion.

For those unfamiliar with these awards, they are named after 81-year-old Stella Liebeck who spilled hot coffee on herself and successfully sued the McDonald’s in New Mexico , where she purchased coffee. You remember, she took the lid off the coffee and put it between her knees while she was driving. Who would ever think one could get burned doing that, right? That’s right; these are awards for the most outlandish lawsuits and verdicts in the U.S.

Kathleen Robertson of Austin, Texas was awarded $80,000 by a jury of her peers after breaking her ankle tripping over a toddler who was running inside a furniture store. The store owners were understandably surprised by the verdict, considering the running toddler was her own son

Carl Truman, 19, of Los Angeles , California won $74,000 plus medical expenses when his neighbor ran over his hand with a Honda Accord. Truman apparently didn’t notice there was someone at the wheel of the car when he was trying to steal his neighbor’s hubcaps.

Terrence Dickson, of Bristol , Pennsylvania , who was leaving a house he had just burglarized by way of the garage. Unfortunately for Dickson, the automatic garage door opener malfunctioned and he could not get the garage door to open. Worse, he couldn’t re-enter the house because the door connecting the garage to the house locked when Dickson pulled it shut. Forced to sit for eight, count ’em, EIGHT days and survive on a case of Pepsi and a large bag of dry dog food, he sued the homeowner’s insurance company claiming undue mental Anguish. Amazingly, the jury said the insurance company must pay Dickson $500,000 for his anguish.

Jerry Williams, of Little Rock, Arkansas, garnered 4th Place in the Stella’s when he was awarded $14,500 plus medical expenses after being bitten on the butt by his next door neighbor’s beagle – even though the beagle was on a chain in its owner’s fenced yard. Williams did not get as much as he asked for because the jury believed the beagle might have been provoked at the time of the butt bite because Williams had climbed over the fence into the yard and repeatedly shot the dog with a pellet gun.
* THIRD PLACE *
Amber Carson of Lancaster, Pennsylvania because a jury ordered a Philadelphia restaurant to pay her $113,500 after she slipped on a spilled soft drink and broke her tailbone. The reason the soft drink was on the floor: Ms. Carson had thrown it at her boyfriend 30 seconds earlier during an argument.
*SECOND PLACE*
Kara Walton, of Claymont , Delaware sued the owner of a night club in a nearby city because she fell from the bathroom window to the floor, knocking out her two front teeth. Even though Ms. Walton was trying to sneak through the ladies room window to avoid paying the $3.50 cover charge, the jury said the night club had to pay her $12,000….oh, yeah, plus dental expenses.

This year’s runaway First Place Stella Award winner was: Mrs. Merv Grazinski, of Oklahoma City , Oklahoma , who purchased new 32-foot Winnebago motor home. On her first trip home, from an OU football game, having driven on to the freeway, she set the cruise control at 70 mph and calmly left the driver’s seat to go to the back of the Winnebago to make herself a sandwich. Not surprisingly, the motor home left the freeway, crashed and overturned. Also not surprisingly, Mrs. Grazinski sued Winnebago for not putting in the owner’s manual that she couldn’t actually leave the driver’s seat while the cruise control was set. The Oklahoma jury awarded her $1,750,000 PLUS a new motor home. Winnebago actually changed their manuals as a result of this suit, just in case Mrs. Grazinski has any relatives who might also buy a motor home.
I love it when people quote America’s ‘high’ infant mortality in support of these arguments. They feel so smart and betray themselves as stupid. America’s infant mortality is inflated by including pre-term births.
Sorkin sucks. Seriously, who cares about The Newsroom? It barely got a second season. Sorkin is such a hack there’s a YouTube video of ‘Sorkinisms’ where the characters he writes for use the SAME PHRASES over and over.

Fake Stellas
Instead of murdering media company owners a better idea would be to put America’s cops in a circular squad. Given their terrible marksmanship too many will survive but it’s a start.
It’s the existence of these stories and their widespread humorous belief that exemplifies an attitude, that’s the point. Whether or not the stories are factually based or not is irrelevant in this case. It’s about who/what is believed to be responsible for what’s happened in the US, and many people rightfully blame over-zealous, self-serving lawyers.
If I had a nickel for every time someone sent me this link and said, “You should watch The Newsroom!” I’d have 40, 45 cents. Which is still a lot. And it’s idiotic.
“It sure used to be…” When? The Reagan years? The Carter years? Nixon, LBJ? The 50s, when segregation was still in place? I can think of some eras when the US was pretty damn awesome, but something tells me Sorkin wouldn’t agree with me.

She received it safely contained in a Styrofoam cup sealed with a plastic lid. Stella squeezed the cup deep between her thighs while pulling off the lid, collapsing the cup with such force that the coffee gushed out and burned up to 16% of her skin with 6% burned to the third degree.
She sued McDonalds because the coffee was too hot and ultimately won a sum far exceeding the medical expense she incurred through her own stupidity.

When I was about three years old, my mom was dropping me off at the babysitter’s house. As the two of them chatted, I walked over to the table, reached up, and grabbed a cup of what turned out to be hot coffee. I received burns from my nose to my belly button, including third degree burns on my collarbones and right shoulder, where the shirt collar and metal snaps had been. I was in the hospital for two weeks, and still carry the scars more than 40 years later.
My mom didn’t sue. It would never occur to her to do that. The babysitter’s husband had a heart attack a few seconds after I got burned. They didn’t sue us for emotional distress. It would never occur to them to do that. Life happens! Nobody sued anybody.
The babysitter didn’t burn me with coffee. I burned myself when nobody was paying attention. McDonald’s didn’t burn that elderly woman either. She did it to herself.
And because she pursued a lawsuit, now McDonald’s and all the other big franchise chains have to treat everyone as if they were imbeciles. You order a coffee, and it comes with a warning: Caution, hot! Well, duh. Thanks for letting us know, every time, that hot coffee is in fact, hot.
Now the next time an imbecile is driving down the road while drinking their hot coffee, they’ll read that warning. If they don’t crash while pondering whether the next move – putting the coffee between the legs and giving it a good squeeze – is really the best course of action, then it is their genitalia that are saved from Darwin, all thanks to that old lady who sued McDonald’s way back when.
This is why I’d probably never become a judge. Instead of awarding that old lady money, I’d have her put into a special-care facility where she couldn’t do any further harm to herself.
