  1. There are some things, regardless of their monetary value, that just shouldn’t be sold. I am currently going through the process of trying, through a London auction house, to recover the medals (including the OBE) awarded to my grandfather, who as a ship’s captain, had three ships torpedoed under him whilst he was in command. They were sold at auction by one of my idiot relatives, who apparently didn’t recognize what I do, that being some items are so precious that one doesn’t own them, one is merely the steward to preserve them for future generations.
But maybe it is just me….

  2. It appears that Kate and I have very different priorities.
It is a very good looking object, though. If I had a million dollars I would contribute to SDA’s trophy fund.

  3. Some distant cousin of my father’s apparently left an old (like at least 18th c.)family bible – one of the ones that has baptism dates recorded and so on – to a son who was a)adopted and b)gay. a) Isn’t a big deal but b) pretty much defeats the purpose of the book, which I’m guessing wound up in a yard sale.

  4. Heartily agree Bruce. I had a great-uncle who was torpedoed 3 times in one morning on three different vessels. His medals are gone forever thanks to an uncaring relative.

  5. Don’t you have enough trophies commemorating your domination of the schnauzer world, Kate?
I agree that somethings should never be sold; they must be kept in the family rather than making a quick buck. That said this is an ugly trophy. “It’s the triple crown, so let’s use nothing but triangles!”
Bruce, was your grandfather incredibly brave, lucky or both? It’s hard to conceive surviving three sinkings in WWII.

  6. “…one is merely the steward to preserve them for future generations.”
    Nice….good luck in your quest!

  7. It is hard to conceive Al. Actually the first one, the Athenia, was torpedoed in WW1 in 1917. The Corrientes and the Cortona were sunk by U-boats in 1940 and 1942. The last sinking was off the Canary Islands, Grandpa kept his remaining crew alive in open boats lashed together for six weeks until they were picked up. For that feat he was awarded the OBE.
I suspect it was a combination of luck and skill that allowed him to survive. But just like my father, who was badly wounded when his RAF bomber crashed, he never spoke about the war, even when asked. A situation commonly experienced by war brats like me.

  8. At the time I did not realize my childhood was overflowing with Triple Crown winners. Wow, was I spoiled. I remember the races between Affirmed and Alydar – and then for Affirmed to be such a dominant 3 year old…just WOW!
Racing needs a Triple Crown winner again.

  9. Winning the triple crown is a huge deal. Does anyone know why the owner is selling the trophy?
