Paul Rahe’s piece titled “The Deepest Source of Our Troubles” provides a shallow analysis of the issues.
He seems to have no understanding of the difference between pleasure and happiness, nor the concept of acting rationally versus irrationally.
Rahe: “Our abandonment of chastity as a norm has had dire political consequences.”
Wrong. Correlation is not the same thing as causation. The state of modern culture is the result of abandoning reason, not chastity.
Indiscriminate sexuality is shallow; a rational person looks for deeper relationships based on love. But this is not an argument to get rid of birth control.
Every person should be focused primarily on his or her own life and future. The prevailing ideology should be one based on reason and an appreciation of man’s nature, not on the mystic fantasies of religion (or Marxism).

NV53 @ 1:23am: I first learned of Paul Rahe when he was interviewed on Peter Robinson’s show, “Uncommon Knowledge”. Interesting fellow and clearly an intelligent man.
But he lost me when he dismissed Mark Steyn’s thesis that America is headed towards a European style socialism. Rahe’s explanation of why Steyn was wrong was [paraphrasing]: “Steyn wasn’t born here and doesn’t understand the American spirit.”
The recent election results show that Steyn understands the new American mentality a whole lot better than Rahe does.
To understand America in 2012, arguably a good comparison is to look at Canada in 1972. In both cases, there was a popular leader (amongst his supporters) who had been in power for 4 years and could do no wrong. Both leaders promised the world and strived to deliver by borrowing oodles & oodles & oodles of money … with no particular thought about how to ever pay it back.
In Canada’s case, being a smaller nation economically, we were eventually told that we’d go broke if our rising debt wasn’t brought under some sort of control.
America is a different case because their currency is the world’s reserve currency. However logic tells me that eventually there has to come a breaking point where no more can be borrowed. BUT the majority of the people, so infected with the disease of wanting & demanding MORE FREE STUFF will not be so quick to accept any such change. So they will keep voting for more & more irresponsible politicians who promise them more goodies but no responsibility for ever paying for them.
Not only will America “drive over a cliff”, but the entire mountain is going to collapse under their feet … and ours by extension too. 🙁

2nd) The person making this statement had to know that she was misleading.
3rd) That this person had to know she had intended to mislead.
Ms Redford said that she believes that what she said was true.
Here’s the facts that can be found through the freedom of information act…
Dec 14th – A document signed by Ms Redford choosing the International Tobacco Recovery Lawyers.
Dec 22nd – Letters going out to the loosing firms announcing that they weren’t chosen.
A call going out to the winning firm saying they did get the contract.
Jan 6 – An email from the winning firm saying that they are delighted to be the chosen law firm on this issue.
Jan 13 – A follow up memo from the deputy minister saying Ms Redford made this decision.
Jul 5 – An email to the CBC confirming Ms Redford made this decision.
During the above dates (other than Jul 5th), Redford was Justice Minister.
