Meow….
Bumped for update – the tweet hits the fan.
Then this morning, Ms. Smith released the following statement:
“In the last day the question has been raised about why I don’t have children of my own. When David and I married in 2006 we intended to have children together. After a few years we sought help from the Calgary Regional Fertility Clinic. I appreciated the support and assistance of the caring staff as we went through tests and treatments, but in the end we were not successful.
“I consider myself very fortunate to have a terrific stepson, Jonathan, David’s son from a previous marriage. I am also blessed to have grown up in a large family with four siblings who have given me the opportunity to be the auntie of 5 terrific nieces and nephews: Emily, Sam, Chloe, Seyenna and Logan.
“Family is very important to me and I consider this to be a very personal matter. I will not be commenting on it further.”
As of this morning, Amanda Wilkie no longer has a Twitter account.
You know, I may just be a commercial artist living in the middle of nowhere who, without any ties to media or party politics, built a political blog that draws 5 million visits a year. And as I have only my internal server stats to assess the ability of Twitter to drive traffic….
… when I warn that Twitter is worse than useless as a medium with which to reach a general audience, that the risk-benefit ratio is so high that any politician who permits staff to use Twitter in any capacity beyond issuing pre-approved public service announcements is a fool…
…I probably don’t know what the hell it is I’m talking about.

Very Classy response to a classless ‘twit’. Sure hope Alberta has a change this spring.
As per Kate’s comment on the value (NOT) of twit’s tweeting, I opened a twitter account because my new (now ancient!) smartphone kept bugging me about it. My one and only tweet said something to the effect that I couldn’t see the point of tweeting. I deleted my account a while ago.
Kate, of course, nailed it right on as usual.
Their own sensitivities come around to bite them. Pretty funny…
Well,I see libertarians are stupid(LAS),is trolling again. You see,LAS,this here ain’t BC,or Morontario,or Queerbec,or Welfare maritimes. We rednecks are finally starting to show up and shove your leftard antics back in your faces. Now go play at rabble,or better yet, huffie’s playground. They(her leftards, bwahahahahaha),are getting ready to sue her. Heh.
Right, Kate. You don’t know what the hell you’re talking about!!! But anybody who ignores what you have to say better look out!
Redford: “The young woman who authored the tweet has resigned from her position. From that action I know she understands the gravity of her actions.”
Aye, and there’s the rub: Amanda Wilkie was much too late in “understanding the gravity of her actions.” Like far too many entitled young people these days, Wilkie is utterly lacking in common decency, compassion, and common sense. Too many young people seem to have absolutely no sense of the importance of boundaries; they seem to have no sense of what’s appropriate and what’s totally inappropriate — and just shoot their mouths off on Twitter or Facebook without any sense of the possibility — no, the probability — of there being consequences to their words/actions.
‘One more casualty of the no-consequence educational system that wraps students in cotton batten. It’s a cruel world out there and Ms. Wilkie, in addition to adding to the cruelty, has just had harsh reality hit her in the face, an eventuality for which she was utterly unprepared.
Well said, ‘batb’, well said!
James @11:40 – “There are literally no good insightful “tweets” they don’t exist.”
I beg to differ.
Howard Hughes @3:28 – “I have never had a twitter account or sent or received a twitter message.
nor facebook nor any other ‘social media’.”
Germs! Twitter is crawling with germs.
Robert W. @3:15 – I like the way she called someone “classless”.
This gaffe loudly screams ineptitude – whether untamed stupidity of the author or a clever trojan exercise The biblical expression “Manna from heaven” for the WRA comes to mind. In any case it poses a huge problem for Redford.
I’m reminded of a Fawlty Towers episode titled “The Germans” – Wherein Basil says to his staff “Whatever you do don’t mention the war” and then proceeds to do exactly that. Calamity ensues.
While families, women and children may seem as golden opportunities for political advantage they are also potential minefields.
As I posted to Albertaardvark earlier today:
The hubris of the APC party seemingly knows no bounds. Forty-some years of virtually unbridled power have corrupted them from within – they have obviously lost control of their own and should be banished to the political desert for the next 40 years.
As an aside – Redford has conclusively proven that she’s an incompetent manager and far less an inspiring leader.
Another libtard bites the dust. Enjoy being a silly nobody you cow.
Paul, I read your excellent comment over there and now here. Well said!
The fact is, in a healthy democracy it makes no sense for one party to stay in power for so long. That, by the way, is why federally I want the Liberals to come back to life (to some extent) and wrestle power away from the Socialist Hordes aka the NDP. For when the federal Tories screw up badly one day, and they will, I don’t even want to imagine the gov’t coffers at the full disposal of Thomas Eclair or successor.
“Keep talking and tweeting, PCs. All it does is reinforce my decision not to vote for you.”

Liberals want conservatives to shut up and conservatives want liberals to keep talking.
And speaking of twitter, anybody else notice that Sun News’ “social media corespondent” Gina Phillips looks just like that prom date pron star?

Twitterdumb.
I’m a little late to the party, here, but after reading Danielle Smith’s reply, am I to understand that some…”woman”…took a shot at someone who wanted children, but for whatever medical reason, could not? As one who has a number of nieces and nephews (some blood related, some not), let me say that this…”woman”…pulled off one cunning stunt.
I use Facebook to keep in touch with family but never update my status and have never used Twitter. I mean come on Twitter? The name kinda says it all. However it is useful. Give an idiot a platform to expose their stupidity for all and you can be sure they will. Spike Lee, Roseanne Barr and now Ms. Wilkie. Twitter is like a laser marker for pointing out liberal stupidity. Gotta like that.
Social media is overrated.
People in the Wildrose talk about the Nenshi campaign for Mayor of Calgary as though it was some 21st century breakthrough.
He galvanized the Muslim vote and the East Indian vote and the gay vote.
This plus news anchor Barb Higgins had the conservative backing of some and Rick McIver had the conservative backing of others.
They split the vote.
All you have to do is look at May, 2011 to see the impact of social media.
My facebook page was ON FIRE with shock and dismay that a majority was attained.
You can’t just sit around drinking your own bath water and expect “liking” links and expect practical change to ensue.
I’m surprised ms redford hasn’t filed a human rights hate crime complaint on behalf of ms smith – clearly ms Wilkie has a lot of hate towards barren women.
It shows me that the APC party is far worse than I suspected. It seems to be a bug light doe every low belly crawling spin thingie who couldn’t get sinecure with the Librano crew.
I can smell the desperation on the Pink PCs from here.
Robert W. (Vancouver) >
Too right – but – not “The Liberals”, another fresh idea party that leans further right like the WRP would do.
Competition is always a good thing, Conservative competition even better.
Here’s what I want to know: can we get the Wild Rose Party transplanted here in Ontario soon enough for the next election?
Because having somebody else than the friggin’ Regressive Preservatives would be -awesome-.
I know how difficult it is for a woman who wants to have children, and can’t. My wife went through five years of poking, prodding, injections, pills, etc., before we finally discovered the simple problem preventing conception. We’ve since been blessed with two amazing daughters, but I know my wife felt a personal sense of failure every month until it happened. My brother’s wife had similar problems, and ultimately, they chose to adopt a wonderful little boy.
I wouldn’t have blamed Ms. Smith at all if she had responded emotionally to this vicious little twa.. er, tweet. That she was able to do so simply and gracefully makes me admire her more.
How can I convince her to move to Ontario?
With you Phantom. Maybe we could call it the Trillium Party- or if we go national, the Red Rose Tea Party. Let me know. I will do a logo. Sorry won’t set up a twit account!
KevinB: You can’t have her. She’s ours.
OURS, I tell you! 😉
Competition is always a good thing, Conservative competition even better.
Yes. Now lets take it federal.
“The fact is, in a healthy democracy it makes no sense for one party to stay in power for so long.”
~Robert W. (Vancouver)
Since you aren’t an Albertan and you have no viable conservative party in B.C. let me help you make sense of it, Robert.
The first principle of conservatism is “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it”.
The Progressive conservative Party of Alberta didn’t need to be replaced for over 30 years.
It was “The’ Most Conservative Government in the entire Nation” because Albertans had the most conservative values in Canada. That’s why they were infiltrated by Liberals and International Communists because those weasels didn’t stand a chance at power in Alberta with the conservative electorate.
So this long governing party has their tentacles spread through every organization and interest group in the province(which was a GOOD THING before they were infiltrated) and after being infiltrated by commie weasels the electorate is still overwhelmingly conservative so the electorate started a new grassroots party to overthrow the now corrupt regime.
-*stay with me Robert I’m trying to help you*-
Now Alberta has Wildrose as a viable alternative to the PCs.
Since you live in a place like B.C. where there aren’t enough conservative voters and you’ll never have a conservative party victory this side of state bankruptcy, you can’t understand that change for the sake of change is flat out stupid and NOT a conservative value.
“That, by the way, is why federally I want the Liberals to come back to life (to some extent) and wrestle power away from the Socialist Hordes aka the NDP. What you can’t imagine, Robert, is the Liberals being led by someone as bad a Thomas Eclair.
Just for the sake of argument, Robert, we’ll pretend the Liberals are led by a crypto-communist named BOB R who once was a member of the NDP in Ontario, how would that be Robert???
Just as bad as Thomas Eclair in the driver’s seat, eh?
My question to you, Robert, is what do you think the defining difference between Liberal Leader’s Dion or Ignatieff’s platform’s and NDP Jack Layton’s were and how different would the result have been given that they were trying to create an official coalition government?
2 quick points,
1. As a husband of a woman that had to go through fertility treatments to get pregnant(successfuly, thank you), I know that what was tweeted was not just ignorant, it was hurtful.
2. Yes, Twitter is great for comedians, very bad for politicians.
Easterners would never vote in such a party. Too dependent on their nannies to tell them what to do.
I see Wilkie has been sacked. Good riddance.

when out of your depth, silence is the best approach
I opened a twitter account, and nothing happened. I realized you have to turn into one of those people who pay more attention to their Iphones, than their surroundings, to appreciate it. Not gonna happen.
If brevity is the soul of wit, it is also the bane of the witless.
As a political medium Twitter is about as useless as handle bars on a unicycle.
Oz,
Of course I would not want a Liberal Gov’t headed by someone on the Far Left! But, anyone who thinks that Harper & co. will remain in power forever is dreaming! If a centre-of-the-road Liberals (or replacement) don’t come into being, the NDP then becomes the de facto replacement. Yikes! That’s the reality we face here in BC and it sucks!
As for a further right conservative gov’t challenging the Tories … wish it were so but that ain’t going to happen unless CBC News is removed, more MSM news outlets become more like Sun News, and the mindsets and expectations of millions of Canadians changes dramatically.
One of the true homes of SDA’s Hateful Trolls is the Huffington Post. Now that they have their own Canadian version, the Despicable Games are played daily by a whole host of LOSERS.
Read the latest comments on this very issue (scroll to the bottom). Seriously, if a friend of yours ever wonders what the definition of a “Leftard” is, just direct them there!

Been reading and commenting on AB election columns / reports etc. since the start of the campaign. While it is anecdotal evidence their has been almost NIL rebuttal of my comments or comments in support of the ABPCs. That is a very ominous sign for the ABPCs. It seems to me they are running on nothing other than that they are the incumbent ruling party. Like any party that is reduced to that – In a democracy or any other form of government – it usually results in a swift fall…
Is it just me, or is there something rather odd about this editorial from Sydney Sharpe? After all, the perpetrator/aggressor in all of this was a woman. What on earth do her despicable actions have to do with “suppressing all women”?
I’m open to standing corrected.

Heh heh, funny stuff, my favorite was hoodie wearing Rep. Bobby Rush robbing the convenience store, priceless.
What an @$$hole thing to make fun of someone who cannot have children.
Robert W., I think it’s a good idea to have a clear choice between Left and Right instead of pretending the ‘centrist’ Liberals voted with anyone other than the NDP during the periods when Pearson or Trudeau or Martin were PM.
It was during those eras that the Liberals proved that they were mainly about advancing the socialist welfare state and the expansion of government power into whole sectors of the Canadian economy, together with cultural manipulation.
I challenge you to cite specific issues of import when the Liberals had a minority government and voted with the ‘conservatives’ instead of the NDP since the time NDP became a force of any consequence in Ottawa.
During the last federal election the Liberals bragged up their record of accomplishments from the National Healthcare program to the Canada Pension Plan to the National Eneregy Policy and low and behold every one of those programs originated with the NDP and were passed by minority Liberal governments with the help of the NDP voting “along side” the Liberals.
Conservatives blame the Liberals for those policies and the Liberals boast to the Left about them as ‘great Canada building accomplishments’ but if you know a bit of history these policies all originate from the NDP.
Really, Robert, Canadians need to have a clear political choice.
They don’t need to be double teamed by a party that ostensibly is centrist but in practice is indistinguishable from the NDP.
What, I ask you, would former Ontario NDP Premier Bob Rae do differently from Ontario Liberal Premier Dalton McGuinty if he were Premier of Ontario today?
Nothing.
Oz, you make some excellent points. Really, you do.
Perhaps I view things from an historical B.C. perspective, which is generally this: The Social Credit Party was the government in power most of my life. My sense is that they were a Centre-Right party under Bill Bennett and before that, his father.
But in 1972 & 1991 sufficient scandals and/or arrogance of the Socreds caused the electorate to toss them out and put in a place the NDP. As is no surprise to anyone on here, the NDP bankrupted the province, causing significant damage.
Compare those wild spectrum swings in B.C. with what has gone on throughout much of Canada’s history. While I’m no fan of Trudeaupia, I have to believe that if a full socialist regime were in power, our country would be even worse off.
Perhaps our difference of opinion really comes down to you having more faith in the Canadian electorate to make the right choice? Make no mistake, I don’t believe that the average Canadian is a dummy but I do believe that most people make rational decisions based on the information available to them. And in Canada for at least the past 45 years, the “news” has been heavily edited with a Left and sometimes Far-Left filter.
So if a Conservative or even a true *conservative* government were in power and their was a fair reporting of the news then I would tend to agree with you about a radical Leftist opposition being fine.
The best gifts are the unexpected ones, like a bad tweet. It’s quite amazing how careless they are being. A symptom of desperation?
LLAB, at first I also thought that this was one careless tweet from Amanda Wilkie. But if you go back through all of her tweets dating back to last September, she has said some pretty rude stuff to a LOT of people. Fact is, if she was just an individual then who would care?! But as a de facto representative of Alison Redford, what she says IS important.
Further to Kate’s thesis, it seems to make little sense for politicians to allow their staffers to Tweet. I suppose it happens either because the politician doesn’t know better or because they think that it’s going to generate a groundswell of favourable support for them. Redford has learned a painful lesson to the contrary.
“The moving twitter tweets, and having twat, moves on.”
Or something like that.
I guess the one thing about instant electronic mass communication is that people can make asses of themselves far faster than they could decades ago. Danielle Smith has handled herself exceedingly well and the only thing I worry about is that the WRP has peaked too early. OTOH, knowing the way things go in Alberta, generally when governments get tossed out there’s not much of the old left when the voters are finished. How many Socred MLA’s are there in Alberta now?
Twitter, IMO, is for twits. I see absolutely no point in widely distributing a message which has to be shorter than 160 characters and is something that can be done when one is half asleep or drunk. I learned my lesson over 20 years ago when newsgroups were the big thing and still run into drunken posts I made even now — thus I rarely put out anything on the internet under my own name.
The first thing that people do now, when determining whether to hire someone, is to google them to find out what kind of interesting stuff comes up. If someone has a very common name, then they might be safe, but if one has a name that’s at all unique anything online will follow them for life.
It will be interesting to see what a WRP victory would have on BC politics. BC, unfortunately, has far too many moonbats but they tend to be concentrated in Vancouver and Victoria. Living in the interior reminds me of the times when I lived in Alberta and I think there needs to be more of a movement to have the interior of BC secede from the moonbat portion of the province and join up with Alberta. Considering that Albertans seem to think that the Okanagen and Shuswap are theirs already, it wouldn’t be much of a change.
Further to my supposition that many Canadians, spoon fed by the corrupt Media Party, are brain dead, read this comment on Wilkie scandal by someone over on the Toronto Star website:
“She was made to resign, but how often does anyone not a right-wing type say such nasty, personal things? This is the political and moral leanings of Steven Harper, the man most responsible for bringing to Canada a new low in public behaviour in the form of American-style smearing. “Fine, I apologize”.That is not an apology. That is what is called a Conservative apology. Trust the right-wing types to stoop so low.”
This person is so stupid that they don’t even understand the players in the mix. If anything, Wilkie & Redford are much closer aligned philosophically with the Liberals / NDP than they are with the federal Tories. But Leftists never let facts get in the way of their hate. 🙁
Robert that same commenter would twist themselves into a pretzel defending the comment if they knew what that Redford is on their team.
Robert W said: “…Toronto Star website…”
Well there’s your problem Robert. After reading the same drivel from Red Star comment sections for years, I’ve concluded somebody programmed a Python script to generate this crap on their site.
James: Well said! And worth an LOL x 100!!!
Phantom: The fact that you know what “Python” is increases your rep in my eyes … even though it was very high already!
