  1. Why don’t we give big tax breaks to working families with kids. Lets start spending our own money on homegrown solutions rather then relying on immigrants to fill gaps.

  2. I have a nephew who married a Filipina and sponsored her to Canada. She left him 6 months after arriving in Canada.

  3. A young woman I was aquainted with a bit, gushed to me one day that she got engaged to her boyfriend who was a student from Morocco. She was also happy that he was not asking her to convert. Well she was a dumb as a slab of beef not to suspect anything. I immediately guessed(correctly) that he was using her to get permament residence and left her ASAP afterwards. Since I did not know her well, there was no point in warning her as she would not listen anyway.

  4. Forgot to add that they rushed into marriage, then he left her ASAP and still legally get to stay for good.

  5. Jason Kenney seems to be doing a remarkably good job. The difference between him and his Liberal and Mulroneyite predecessors is night anf day.

  6. I was going to comment on this thread, but the comments by “ok” are beyond my intellectual capacity,so I’ll demure.

  7. @ ok
    Say what?
Actually, I would increase the limit to 10 years, not five. And the mail-order wouldn’t have citizenship until they could prove they could pay their way if they did leave the marriage – no 50/50 split of assets.
Oh, and if any muslims try polygamy, throw them in jail as per the criminal code. Then strip them of their citizenship and deport ’em after release.

  8. Marriage fraud is sad but does it justify more government regulation? If people are stupid enough to enter into contracts that are eventually harmful to themselves, should the government really step in to protect them from their own bad decisions? Immigrants that end up going on welfare have the same amount of money added to their sponsors tax bill, so financially it seems to not be a burden on the public.
I agree with T.C., if we’re going to make residency conditional, why can’t we just make it conditional on staying married to the sponsor? 5 years is an improvement, but it’s still an arbitrary half-measure. Barring sponsorships by immigrants only affects the frauds that want to bring in more people, not individuals out to cheat their way in.

  9. Rob, while I agree that people are stupid prone(everyone of us makes stupid decisions) there’s a duty to protect Canadians who want to marry from frauds looking for a quick an easy key to open their door to our country. More importantly there’s a duty to protect Canada overall from immigration process abuses that cost us all more. Five years isn’t a silver bullet but it might make us look less appealing.
Thieves will go for the easiest target first.

  10. This helps address huge organized fraud rings much of which originates in India, but also many other third world crap holes.
It’s not just about some white loser that can’t socialize with someone who actually can understand what he’s saying. You see these clowns all over the expat communities of South East Asia especially Thailand. What happens is that they get so full of themselves, along with a little saved money, and think they can bring their little kingdom they have created back home. They usually find out quickly that they were deluding themselves in those $1.00 a beer, $20.00 a night hooker bars for too many years.
It’s really a drop in the bucket compared to the organized ethic fraudsters.

  11. I sure hope there is no change. We were planning on using this to help with the skilled labour shortage. A “civil union” with welders, pipefitters and ironworkers instead of that whole temporary foreign worker thing.

  12. There are probably as many stories of foreign women exploited for unsavory purposes. It seems like reasonable legal safeguards should exist for both parties.
Full disclosure: my wife of 35 years and I met in her country, where I had been living for over four years at the time. It is possible to find someone who likes you without ulterior motives.
