I know they don’t in Ontario. Three times a week I have to sit down with my grade three son and teach him the math that he doesn’t get at school. Next year I will start with my grade 1 son. This year we are concentrating on his reading because the reading standards are abysmally low in his top rated public school.
I’ve heard the same story for 30 years…. EVERY TIME tuition is increased! The problem is the prognosticators are always wrong. Enrollment has constantly gone UP.

The Quebecers are the most corrupt or ignorant people in North America. This is a view from the West side.
They live and have lived for so long on other peoples money, the appearance of it is, they think it just appears out of nowhere.
As it is with most terminal cases of welfare, ignorance is the best policy.
It’s one thing to live high off the hog when you’ve got the ROC bankrolling your entitlement driven social and educational programs.
It’s another thing to rub our faces in it and complain how tough they’ve got it.
But then again…instead of math their schools teach the art of whining, I guess.
You want an education- go to Quebec and demand it be told in english- why… we, the ROC, are paying for it.
In fact, I don’t think that the Quebec students nor the public know who pays for their freestyle living.
How much is Quebec’s debt again Kathy? sometimes a reminder should be alerted to them. I don’t see how they can be proud of taking money from other provinces then to complain it is not enough.

Some of the finest people I know in our small town here in BC are ex-Quebecers. Even tho they acknowledge the general BS that goes on back home they still will vote Libel or even NDP. Go figure.
Non-Quebecers should realize this is the culture they are raised in. But, after all, we have been enabling this situation ever since Trendy’s time. Someone mentioned the Quebec debt which I believe is north of $400 billion. Combine that with Ontario at + $500 and you have a recipe for national disaster. AT some point you know that the federal government will be faced with a monster bailout. The question will be whether the rest of Canada will once again head the clarion call of national unity ultimatum.
A sidebar to this whole situation is the number of Quebers who work for the feds in Ottawa/Hull. One of the reasons that Reform was first elected in Ontario from a Ottawa riding was the slow takeover of the bureacracy by francophones. Departments were getting francophone heads and then all subsequent hirings were from Quebec. Even if the CPC party wants to reign in spending they will have a built in bureacracy who will sabatoge any such effort.
Oh yeah…..I just paid my son’s second semester tuition last week online. He always pays me back as he, like the poor Quebec student, also has to work a job during weekends and the summer break. Cost of tuition here in Alberta? $6800.00. Now shut your pie holes you wimpy frogs.
Quebecers will always be Canada’s first Affirmative Action people. They will never rise to our standards of self worth and it’s too late to ship them back to France, because the French won’t have them back.
If we don’t keep the welfare flowing there will be blood in the streets.
There’s not allot Canadians can do except hire them when forced to and keep them playing cards in the back room for as little pay as you can manage without lock-outs or riots.

I’ve always looked at the Quebec welfare handouts as an unpalatable but necessary temporary payoff. First and foremost it’s keeps them on the reservation and out of our communities as much as possible.
What we need to do is allow them to self govern and then separate. Build an Israeli style border fence and then put most of our saved resources into defending it like the 38th parallel with North Korea.
It’s simple. Eliminate the Equalization Payments entirely, let the provinces exercise jurisdiction over provincial responsibilities, and get the Feds out of it all together. If the provinces want to set up a replacement EP system, they can answer directly to their electorate.
Ya well get ready …. according to WalMart, they aren’t teaching anything about numbers in American schools at all.

The only reason we plebs got any book leanin’ at all was because they needed us to work in the sweat shops and that meant we had to at least read and write add and subtract. They used stress punctuality and hygiene as well, but that went away with the gen- Xers.
After than it simply became the educational industry, nothing to do with educations, just union jobs and government propaganda.
What we have now are two generations of people who do not read and write well, do not understand basic math, cannot balance a check book and don’t really want to work much.
And for the ‘ya but’ gang, there are exceptions as always.
Quebec is the leader in that race to the bottom. They really don’t’ want to work.
I think this comment (from a Quebecer) is particularly telling: Which leaves me to wonder, having tried both sides of the Outaouais, what value do ROCanadian students see — and more importantly receive — from being double- or, as you claim, triple-charged? Who’s the chump? ROCanadian students for being fleeced without as much as a whimper (for fear of raising the ire of irascible columnists in right-wing broadsheets and tabloids, perhaps?) or Quebec kids fighting for every penny they give the rather sizeable self-perpetuating bureaucracies universities seem to have become?
For this reason, I say remove all subsidies from higher education – Let the universities collect all that they need from the students, and if the provinces want to subsidize your education, do it on the back end like Saskatchewan is doing.

Just trying to show that there is no easy resolution to the Quebec problem. We can only feed, clothe and keep them contained for so long. Michigan is doing the same with Detroit today, with a 47% illiteracy rate the state funds the city just to keep the feral animals housed in a virtual reality prison without bars or fences. To do otherwise they would escape into the greater community’s around the state or even country.
Unfortunately for us we have similar problems with Quebec, I can’t pick up a store item or owner’s manual without reading French first, then having to find the English second. They simply have to go, before long their downtrodden influence will have our kids pulling up their pants with belts, wearing horse blinder tunnel vision glasses, sipping lattes on other people money, and embracing Shari Law.

Knight you are right,all it would take for a civil war to break out in the US would be the cancellation of the welfare and food stamp programs.Nearly half of the people of working age in the USA pay no income tax,yet they expect to have Ipods and every new electronic gadget the day after they hit the market.Quebec is getting closer to this sense of entitlement every year and when the gravy train stops there will be hell to pay.

Exactly, and it’s coming to the US sooner or later. The biggest difference is in what people see as a “civil war” I think. This won’t be another North verses South, but a gutting of society from within by the “have not’s”. There are currently +45 million and growing on food stamps living in a ghettoized entitlement and drug culture. You simply can’t sustain the civil peace as a welfare nation forever, especially since the innovative manufacturing America has long gone away. The jobs will never come back to America as they once were without a future collapse and subsequent rebuild, or an unlikely complete 180 degree turn which of course will never happen now.
People seem to be ignoring all the obvious signs out of convenient comfort I think. Detroit, along with many other cities should have been a wakeup call. Soon it’s California and other states to gradually fall apart as reality catches up with the New America.
It only took the Rodney King beating to burn away large sections of LA, or Katrina to highlight the visceral animal nature hiding in the dark corners of American society. God help the US and by extension us here in Canada if there was ever a complete financial collapse, a food blight, or crop failure, a pandemic etcetera. All of which are natural and probable disasters in the course of any human civilization.
That said, we should not be nurturing large welfare dependant societies anywhere, as a pre-emptive safeguard to naturally occurring disasters.

I graduated in 1984 with $13000 debt. Paid it off in 2 years. My 3 children, one graduate and 2 in school, will come out with about $20,000. My daughter paid hers off in 2 years, my son’s probably the same or sooner. If you are in programs that provide jobs after graduation then you are ok. If you’re in some fluff program, well, you made your choice.
