Virginia Cowles: The American who saw Britain at its best
Charles Moore reviews Looking for Trouble by Virginia Cowles (Faber)…
Cowles was most struck, especially when she compared it with the rout of France, by the way the British naturally respected their political leaders, and the way those leaders did, when they finally had to, lead. She also noticed how the British were positively pleased (see above) to be alone, defending their own shores. “I was more than impressed. I was flabbergasted. I not only understood the maxim that ‘England never knows when she is beaten’; I understood why England never had been beaten.”
What would she think now?

The down fall of England and every other bankrupt welfare state including the USA started when women got the vote. From there they started to influence public policy and do what they do best – join together, collaborate and be socially compassionate and involved.
The worst thing was when they abandoned their traditional roles as wives and mothers to do more fulflling things like shuffle claim forms around a desk or become office managers. There are few social problems that cannot be traced back to so called gender equelity and the female abandonment of the home.
Virginia Cowles seeing England menaced from the outside is a far cry from today’s England whose babies have been devoured by rats inside their own crib.
God save the Queen, ’cause her subjects are going to Hell on a handcart.
Reminds me of Greer Garson and Walter Pigeon in “Mrs. Miniver.’ Sounds like a nice book.
Never should have joined the Common Market. It all traces back to that bad decision.
The welfare state is finished.
No money or suckers left to steal from.
As for Europe its done like road kill.
When you allow unlimited Colinization by people who dispise your whole existance. It only a matter of time before you yourself become extinct. Particularly when you stop breeding for “lifestyle” Choices for only oneself.
The Uk may never have been beaten but since WWll – they have surrendered to welfare statism and excess immigration and false sense of entitlement. Imagine, as reported today in the Sun and Daily Mail, a Somalie family not even accepted as refugees, have been given a “council” house in the posh of the posh neighborhood of London and the taxpayer pays about $10,000 monthly in rent for them – just so they can be closer to friends.
Broken and Bankrupt Britain
Something is really wrong.
” the way the British naturally respected their political leaders, and the way those leaders did, when they finally had to, lead.”
Yes, in the “good old days” Britain was fortunate to still have leaders, now, they just have politicians.
There’s a difference.

England is a write-off.
My dad (Brit immigrant circa 1929) said the Brits always lost every battle….except the last one…
What I told him after visiting that slimy rock…”everybody with any get and go…left!”
As far as Somalia and Somalians….they are like a lotta jokes…ya just had to be there.
Somalians are demanding and extremely brazen.
The “Black Hawk Down” event was because they figured the Americans were stealing their stuff…and giving it to the enemy…
To an extent Somalia is like the London Riots…writ large…but it is now more complex than that….El Shabab (Somali Taliban) have injected an additional aspect….the warlords were a little more rational….
The Islamic Republik of Britain.
“The Islamic Republik of Britain.”
Philanthropist 1:00 AM
Actually the last hurrah of the USSR.
Same policies…same results.
Britain’s Beslin is coming….
I always thought of England as a backstop. Winston Churchill. George Orwell. That was a long time ago. Now I think of England the way you remember fondly the cool personality of Uncle George before he went gaga.
Bye-bye, Great Britain
