A most informative segment was aired on John Batchelor’s show last night, illustrating the stark contrast between Canada and the U.S. these days. It featured guest Jason Clemens, of the Macdonald-Laurier Institute, who recently wrote this column. Lorne Gunter has an equally interesting follow-up piece.

Glad we had Harper in power. At least we have a real economist as PM.
If the States goes bust, I don’t think it will matter. The whole Planet will be in trouble.
“If the States goes bust, I don’t think it will matter. The whole Planet will be in trouble.”
Exactly!! Fleeing to Canada won’t help.
What Gunter tends to forget is that Paul Martin stole $25 billion out of the UIC fund to balance the budget.
Another point on the US budget debate.
The Tea Party is being called ‘terrorists’ for insisting that there be $3 in cuts for every $1 in tax increase.
Paul Martin’s austerity budgets cut $7 for each $1 tax increase. What term would the far left use to describe Martin now?
The US absolutely must institute a Federal sales tax just as we in Canada have the GST/HST. It’s their only solution
Perhaps some of our SDA pundits can help me out here. The Paul Martin/Jean Cretien Libs are taking an awful lot of credit lately for a balanced budget back then. But if memory serves me right, it would never have happened if Reform’s Preston Manning hadn’t forced it. Am I mistaken here? I’m quite sure that Manning – somehow – manipulated the Libs into the spending cuts. Am I correct? And if, so, does anyone remember how such a momentus victory for conservative economics came about. And – if I’m correct – why is Preston Manning not getting his due credits here? Anybody out there? Preston . . . ?
