It was fun to watch that explode on Twitter last night!
By the time I crashed around 11PM a half dozen companies who had automatic advertising on the site had the site removed from their approved list.
Papa John’s pizza probably had one of their biggest Wednesday nights in years. People were going and buying Huggies diapers who had no kids. They just bought them and dropped them off at different charities, after Huggies pulled their ads.
Wonkette’s twitter feed went from a post every 20 or 30 minutes to nothing the entire night, but I imagine their “mention” list a kinda long…..LOL
The really interesting part was that there was no defense by the usual suspects on the left, no attempts at justification outside of the creeps at wonkette itself. There may actually be a line that shouldn’t be crossed for them. Of course, the fact that the line is the degradation of a three year old child with Down’s is a statement in and of itself.
Goes way beyond intolerant. Well into despicable territory.
So typical of a “progressive”.

I loved the comment about being a progressive is having a disease.
You can’t get any lower than that. Attacking a mentally handicapped infant as a way to get to his mother.
Just imagine the fallout if the word “gay” had been used instead of “retarded.”
I’m not easily shocked, but that website shocked me. To ridicule any child, but especially a special needs one, is unforgivable. I, too, was watching the whole thing unfold on Twitter. Nice to see the advertisers pulling their support.
I’ve worked with Down’s kids. They are like looking into the face of God.

A recent study showed that Down’s syndrome people are much better at telling if someone is not telling the truth than the average person. Maybe people who ridicule those with Down’s syndrome are afraid of them because of this ability.
My sister inlaw has Down’s. She makes me smile as do all the Down’s I have ever met.

Can someone help me understand how this vitriol not real hate speech? To write what this cretin wrote about one of the most vulnerable in our society is beyond unacceptable and should not go unpunished.
As above, I am a beleiver in free speech, so I absolutely support their right to say what they said. As the brother of someone who is mentally and physically challeneged, and as someone involved in organizations that support such individuals, their comments sicken and disgust me. Speech has consequences, and it sounds like they’re getting the ridicule and negative reaction that they deserve.

Having stumbled upon the Wonkette site through my regular website visits yesterday morning, I was left nauseated. Being a mom of a wonderful son with DS, I thought I had seen everything, until yesterday.
I guess we can wratchet the bar even lower. How deranged does one have to be to keep finding more vile and increasingly hurtful things to say about someone who would never want to harm anyone else?
I hope all the advertisers on Wonkette pull the plug. I think these idiots only have feeling in their wallets.

I have never seen anything so despicaple in print as this, I don’t usually use the F bomb, but I don’t know how many I dropped when I read the article. And Justine Trudeau objects to the word barbaric. Have to go take my blood pressure pills.
In case you all missed it, some anonymous benefactor purchased the domain name of the demented author of that trash (he had let it expire, apparently), and directed it to the donation page of the Downs Syndrome Society.

For those who came and are offended by this post: I’m sorry, of course. But I stand by my criticism of Sarah Palin using her child as a political prop.

I can accept that he may have a problem with his belief she utilizes Trig as a prop (even though I do not share that belief) and he has full rights to that opinion – but I think that we should recognize that even he realized after the fact that he crossed a line which was inappropriate – owned it – and quasi-appologized for it. We have all made similar mistakes in our own pasts – and I respect people on one level who will admit their mistakes – even while disagreeing with their beliefs…

The fact that wonkette has an extended history of posts denigrating this child removes any possibilty of his apology be anything more than a lame attempt at damage control. The post was up for two days before the storm really broke over their break water.
They have probably memory holed all the Trig posts by now, but a couple right wing blogs captured them yesterday. Will try and find the links later.
So, given the demented author’s disgust at using children as political props, I assume the author’s next target will teacher’s unions and Al Gore.
One of my elementary schools was integrated with special needs children. DS kids are sweethearts, always gentle and happy. Stuef would really feel like a putz if he actually met some of these kids.
My wife worked with DS children for over thirty years and loved everyone of them. They love in return.
What else can you expect from progressives.
This kind of stuff is why I know I am on the right side….why I am pro-life and why I am so proud to be a Christian and a conservative. and one more thing: there was a time when people hid away their Down Syndrome children and were embarrassed by them, even giving them up to institutions. I’m also not exactly a fan of Barry O and Michelle Antoinette. But if one of their girls had Down syndrome it would never occur to me in a million years to come out with something like that. The excuse will be “Oh, Palin makes a big deal about it”. But they made a big deal about it, not her. Why didn’t she abort the “defective” baby – what was she trying to prove? What’s up with her family anyway? Can her stalker move into the house next door? Can Andrew Sullivan who isn’t a gynaecologist but plays one at the Atlantic, keep it up for a full two years?
Let it be known to every single advertiser that appears on that website that you will refuse to buy their products if they continue their support.
Since reading the article this morning, I have fished for words to describe the contempt and disgust I feel for the author, but in this matter I continue to find the English language wanting.
The Non-apology:
A post on this page satirizing Sarah Palin using her baby as a political prop was very badly done and sounded like the author was mocking the child and not just Sarah Palin/Sarah Palin’s followers.
The writer, Jack Stuef, has apologized for it. And we have decided to remove the post as requested by some people who have nothing to do with Sarah Palin, but who do have an interest in the cause of special needs children. We apologize for the poor comedic judgment.
That is a non-apology, it was just a comedic moment that was read wrong….As my three year old would say. Ha-hoes…

There is a lot that can be said and supposed about this matter. I don’t believe Wonkette’s writers, ect. are in any way, shape or form intelligent observers of the American political scene, nor are their “fans” likewise savvy. These people are losers who attacked a child, revelled in it, thought it was funny and then tucked their tails between their legs when they found out that real human beings wouldn’t stand for that kind of vomit-inducing vitriol. The alleged topic of that post (if can call it that)- that being Sarah Palin’s use of her son as a prop- was incidental at best. It was a mean-spirited assault on A CHILD WITH DOWN’S SYNDROME. Sorry to shout but it must be emphasised how vulgar and mean Wonkette and its “fans” are. What manly, brave people they are to attack a child. What’s next? Tripping old ladies? That seems to be the forte of cowards who get their jollies from kicking disabled kids in the back. It’s a sad state of the human condition when things like that happen. One is only relieved when one hears the outrage against such vile acts.
