  1. More and more I find that the province of my birth has been destroyed by these Marxist swine, maybe to the point that there is no turning them around. They are in a position that without Big Brother supporting them they’d fold and the chances of them abandoning this artificial teat is slim and maybe, and I hope I’m wrong, none.
    We might have to wave farewell….or declare the Bloc traitors and…oops, musn’t think like that.

  3. Every summer, when we get back to PEI from the Cayman Islands, and do our shopping at the Superstore- with cows grazing in the next field- I am astounded by the prices of milk and butter. In Cayman we pay maximum 4.50 a US gallon for IGA milk. That is with import by sea, and a 27% import tax. I can still buy butter under $3 a pound.
    With 8 kids it costs less to feed them in an island country that grows only coconuts? What a waste of a natural advantage!

  7. Quebec has 40% of the quota but 23% of the population. That pretty much sums up how completely screwed we are here in Canada.

  8. Yet another example of how Quebec IN Canada harms Canada. The next time they seriously threaten to secede, tell ’em Go! An amicable divorce seems in the ROC’s best interests.
    Whether Quebec is really willing to leave, taking it’s fair share of the Canadian national debt with them, and starting to pay in full their own bills, becoming adults, is questionable.
    Behavioral Psychology says they won’t. It’s a bluff on the ROC that’s always seems to have gotten Quebec what it wants, which the behavioral psychs call immediate positive reinforcement. The ROC gets a constant response from Quebec, based on constantly rewarding Quebec for it’s traditional secession gamesmanship.

  11. I have voiced my opinions on the milk board and supply management in the past. It is theft plain and simple. The poor are hit the hardest.
    I just returned from a month in the U.S. A ham I paid $22 for in Canada- $10.00. A 3.5 lb frying chicken. $8.00 here- $3.00 U.S.
    Sickening. Let’s get rid of 2 things, supply management and PQ.

    I neglected to point out the taxes. A fill up on my truck. $65.00 U.S. Back in Canada $95.00. Same truck, same day. Yeah the taxes are really going to hurt him in NY.

  14. Having worked very closely with the NS dairy system I can tell you this guy knows his stuff, particularly about Quebec driving the system.
    My sincere hope is that the CPC win a majority without a single seat in Quebec. If that happens then there’s a slight chance of reform, but it would still take big brass economic balls, the likes of which I doubt exist in the big gov CPC camp.

    Oh yes, the Wheat Board, Dairy Marketing Board and et al. How do you say Canuckistan in English. Ontario wheat growers I think have the choice. I believe the Ontario fruit farmers dumped their marketing board.

    I was talking with a (Christian) liberal acquaintance on Saturday and he said he was seriously considering voting for Harper hoping that he’d get a majority without any seats from Quebec.

    That is blatantly false. Most of the dairy products sold in the Yukon come from Alberta and BC.

  22. The crash of entitlements world-wide will bring about the end of supply management. In the EU Germany isn’t going to support Greek olive growers with five acres of trees. In the US the Farm Bill is simply not affordable.
    Meanwhile commodity prices are all very high which makes the climb down from AG subsidies (supply management is an imputed subsidy) worldwide more politically doable now than it ever has been. And the BRIC countries seem to be prepared to unprotect their farmers if it will open up trade barriers on manufactured and other goods.
    Canada needs to be proactive or the upheaval in the dairy and eggs sector will be enormous and wasteful. There is a way but time and space don’t permit it here.
    And yes Quebec is driving the SM bus, but rest assured the vast majority of SM producers in the other provinces aren’t pulling the bell cord saying they want to get off. Remember that supply management is a provincial jurisdiction in some repects.

  25. My company provided services to dairy farmers and I sat on the Board for economic develpment in our town.
    1) Fluid milk quota: BC produces half of what is consumed. That goes for western Canada to my knowledge. Why I ask my dairy customers. Well because Quebec producers invested a lot in plant and animals and have to get a return to pay for that. This has been going on since Supply Management was brought in how long is the payout? Couldn’t say.
    2) If BC producers were able to double their production to met BC demand it would mean 2X the dairies in our area. Dairies have a multiplier effect to service their demand. The economic implication is hugh. They stabilize the $ inflow into the entire Agricultural community.
    3) Dairy industry generates a return right or wrong that allows intergenerational farm transfers. Father to son is very common. Milk quota has become so valuable however, that farmers now sell the quito for millions $ and simply walk away.
    4) Western dairy farmeres usually do not complain about the national production inequity simply because they are making a nice living and don’t want to rock the boat. We got ours syndrome.
    5) Modern dairies in BC are now milking upwards of 200 animals. Lots of Quebec dairies milk as few as 35 to 65 animals and still make a nice living.
    6) Everything I have mentioned above is about the white milk you buy in stores. This doesn’t even touch the processed milk into cheese etc. Quebec absolutely dominates this high value added segment.
    I once asked Bill Vanderzalm why he voted to support Meech Lake when it would have given enshrined special status for Quebec. He said “Canada took us in after WWII. I owe this country”. I never supported him at the polls again. The depth of thought that went into that comment was staggering for a provincial leader.
    We will have a provincial election in BC sooner than later. I challenge all voters to ask the Libels and NDP what work they have done on ‘equalization’ implications for our province. I suggest that you will discover NONE! The Fraser Institute released a study years ago stating that $1.8 billion per annum of health care budget was consumed by retirees who never worked or paid into health care in BC.
    For all the money that provincial governments spend don’t you think they would have an office somewhere that calculates the cost of equalization? Unbelieveable!

    I would be surprised if the Yukon doesn’t get milk products from quebec. Most of the ‘industrial’ milk quota belongs to quebec. They produce the overwhelming majority of the butter and cheese we Canadians consume. Yukoner’s probably get their fresh milk from AB or BC.

  27. While we are talking about Quebec taking a hike and their share of the debt with them we can throw in the Aboriginals and THEY can start paying Income Taxes like the rest of us.
    Quebec will never separate. The Bloc is obsolete. They get far more from threatening to separate than they will EVER get FROM separating. They should be renamed the Blackmail Bloc because that is what they are doing. The ‘equalization payments, including the dairy board payments, are far more in Quebec’s favour, as is pointed out. Why do we put up with this?
    Elizabeth May may not have a seat in parliament and therefore ineligible to be in the ‘debate’ but Guilles Dueceppe has NO representation anywhere else in this country BUT Quebec and is therefore ONLY a provincial leader. He no more belongs in the debate than Elizabeth May… but I digress.
    The dairy board domination by Quebec is simply done because THEY CAN. We seem to have NO one with a backbone to stand up to these guys!
