  1. In Canada the guards would be charged, lose their jobs and the criminals would get a slap on the wrist.

  2. The hoodlums are called ‘gopniki’ and fighting is one of their passtimes. That level of toughness is pretty standard over there. Notice no police, panic, or paperwork and it’s business as usual in no time flat. Security guards in Canada are usually a joke.

  3. Sun News – go to http://sunnewsnetwork.ca/i_want_sun_news/ for a link that will create a request to your local cable supplier requesting Sun News.
I doubt Access Communications will provide it on their regular tiers – after all I really need to see OWN rebroadcasting stuff that already appears on other channels.

  4. EBD, I do not doubt the veracity of that little clip one bit.
In the hotels in 2008 when we visited Kiev, Zaporozhye, Moscow and St. Petersburg there were security guards in the lobby areas near the elevator entrances. In all cases they wore suits and there were distinctive bulges in their jackets. It took a few days of them keeping an eye on your coming and going before they would give you something that resembled a smile and a friendly nod.
In Zaporozhye the hookers did not seem to have any problem getting past them to the second floor lobby area one evening when there was a Cossack wedding going on. I guess they figured some of the unattached Cossacks might get a little tipsy and need some help.
Another interesting little observation was that jewelry stores had a visibly armed guard at the entrance to the store.
The security people over there do not ask you if they can polish your shoes or brush your teeth for you.

He’s got the photos to prove it. Do read.

  7. I notice that diminutive visible minority females are under represented in Novosibirsk security guard details. Someone should file a discriminatory human rights complaint with the United Nations.

  8. Nice. The one guard KOs two of them. Now for some reason I have Wendy Carlos’ synthesizer version of Beethoven’s Ninth stuck in my head.

  9. CTVs question of the day:
Do you want to see Lizzie May at the debates?
Nos have it, but it’s still early.
You all know what to do!

  10. Why the silence from the media on the Question that destroyed Dion in the last election?
Cap-and-trade — useless, dumb, and reckless: Goldstein
Michael Ignatieff’s irresponsible election promise would be a financial disaster for Canada
    By LORRIE GOLDSTEIN, Toronto Sun
    http://www.torontosun.com/comment/columnists/lorrie_goldstein/2011/04/04/17874221.html
Michael Ignatieff’s 2011 election Red Book promise to create a cap-and-trade market in carbon dioxide emissions, completes a triple play of stupidity on energy and environmental policy by the Liberals going back almost 20 years.
It started with Jean Chretien’s reckless promise in his 1993 Liberal Red Book to cut Canada’s emissions to 20% below 1988 levels by 2005.
Stephane Dion, after replacing Martin as Liberal leader in 2006, discarded Chretien’s previous rejection of a carbon tax and his own preference for cap-and-trade, in order to support a carbon tax as the central plank of his “Green Shift” program. It was massively rejected by voters in 2008.
For Ignatieff to cite Europe’s cap-and-trade market, the Emissions Trading Scheme, as an example to Canada, is political insanity.
Since it was created in 2005 by European governments it’s been a disaster.
It failed to lower emissions. (What did, unintentionally, was the 2008 global financial crash.)
It sent prices consumers pay for fossil-fuel generated electricity skyrocketing.
It provided undeserved profits to giant utilities and energy companies, while hospitals and universities fired nurses and teachers to buy carbon credits.
It has been beset by multi-billion-dollar financial frauds, plus widespread fraud in the carbon credit markets.

  11. April Fools joke from Manitoba.
    http://www.agcanada.com/Article.aspx?ID=34474
The supreme irony of Manitoba farmers wanting the CWB to market their canola is that 11 of 13 Manitoba judges ruled against the monopoly marketing powers of the CWB in the Hallet-Nolan barley selling case of 1950.
And the ‘voluntary’ part would last about a day and half under the megalomaniacs at the CWB.
Maybe these Manitoba farmers should better spend their time picketing against the CWB selling Unethical Wheat.

  12. anne nfc, I think that the next question from CTV should be:

  15. Ignatieff slams Harper over Facebook screening
    http://www.cbc.ca
Michael Ignatieff takes aim at Stephen Harper after a student was removed from a Conservative event in London because a Facebook photo showed her posing with the Liberal leader.
Not so fast!! A photo of this person appeared in today’s London free Press . I may be incorrect but she certainly looks like the same person that was the recipient of Ann Coulter’s “Take a camel”
remark. If so, her and her group are nothing but a bunch of $#!T disturbers. An obvious set-up.
Shaidle may be able to shed some light on whether or not this is the same person.

OTTAWA – A leading international think-tank says Canada will lead its peers in the G7 in economic growth during the first half of this year.
The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development says the outlook for economic growth has brightened for all G7 countries, with the exception of Japan.
But the improvement has been most marked in Canada and to a lesser extent the United States.”
“Canada is now expected to grow by 5.2 per cent in the first quarter of 2011, and 3.8 per cent in the current second quarter.
Much of that growth has come from the resources sector in Western Canada and continued strength in the housing market in most parts of the country.”

  21. ROGERS WON’T BE CARRYING SUN NEWS NETWORK (SNN)
    Surprise! Surprise!
Partial Rogers e-mail response to my request that they carry SNN:
At this time, Rogers does not have plans to launch the Sun News Network. Rogers does its best to package and launch services that offer the best value to its customers.
” … the best value to its customers”?? What BS. Carrying SNN would be a shrewd business move on Rogers’ part, aside from supporting freedom of expression in Canada.
They don’t seem to care. ‘Probably friends of Peggy Atwood and George Soros.

  22. Stelmach pandering to the Greens
“The Alberta government has proposed new environmental rules that would revoke a number of oil sands leases – including those which already have active projects – in an effort to protect sensitive habitat, wildlife and forest land in the most industrialized area of the province.
The government on Tuesday unveiled a plan to set aside two million hectares, or about 20 per cent, of Alberta’s oil sands zone, for conservation.”
