Well, the US Constitution considers that we humans are ‘endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights….Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness’. And considers that such are entitled by ‘The Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God’. The point of a reference to god is to reject the notion of the ‘hubris’ or arrogance of man and to acknowledge man’s fallibility. What’s wrong with that?
Oh, and Occam, before you comment about ‘well, Mubarak was elected and could be unelected’, I’d suggest you check out some facts. The Egyptian Constitution for one. Especially Article 76 – makes it almost impossible for any opposition party to emerge and also, to run a candidate. Oh – and there are no term limits.

And understand that a socialist statist economy, as is that of Egypt, had reached the carrying capacity of such an economy. It could not sustain a population that had doubled in 40 years from 40 to 80 million. A socialist economy is ‘no-growth’, it’s finite, depending on its basic resources.
What is needed is a capitalist growth economy – and Egypt had been preventing such a middle class economy from emerging, leaving the majority of the people in poverty. The critical threshold emerges, and a tectonic shift is necessary. The Old Guard did everything they could to prevent it, but it’s the electronic age now, and that means – blogger power. People power.

I actually heard on the news last night that the Christian community would have liked Mubarak to stay. This contradicts the street interviews where the meme is that everyone Christian and islamists are together in their desire to see him go.

wallyj, I’m sure the Egyptian Christian community (which is both -old- and large) is keeping their powder dry and their eyes wide open. They were official government whipping boy under Mubarak, whenever he needed a diversion or to let some steam off the discontent he’d have a few Christians killed. Mostly because there aren’t too many Jews left in Egypt these days.
However the specter of the Muslim Brotherhood getting more power in Egypt is a pretty scary one. Better the devil you know, and all that.

Very entertaining to see the liberal reporters (especially the female ones) condemning Mubarak and embracing the opposition (Muslim Brotherhood). If the liberals get their way they will all be stoned, No the other stoned. Reality sucks if you’re a liberal.
I have no major opinion either way on Egypt, I still maintain it’s none of our business and they should stay out of ours.
One way to look at this fiasco is who is for this so called freedom of the people overthrow.

IMHO… It seems like a Mubarak/Army scam. I believe that Mubarak was very supportive of his military of which he was one time a part of. Now the army takes control for the transistion period. Can we be sure that Mubarak is not in control of his appreciative old buddies in the armedforces. I will believe he is not, depending on what happens in September.

Regardless of what the world thinks of us or does, it’s we as western nations that are developed for a reason and the rest is not.
It’s not us that wish to live in those countries or societies; they flock to ours in the multimillions.
It is not conservative values that try and tear apart our successful societies but Liberal malcontents and their radical totalitarian “allies” that move to change our systems to their advantage. You either change with their beliefs or they will riot in the streets and violently destroy you.
They have succeeded in Egypt, by their boasts and rants because it’s one small wedge at the tip of the western world. The left is impatient with the progress in the west and knows it needed to fracture western culture at the fringes to get an avalanche started.
What the useful idiots on the left fail to understand is the global domination game of multilevel chess that they or anyone else on the outside could ever rationalize much less understand. They are pathetic pawns in a game that ultimately destroys the west along with the third world, while enriching and empowering a few.
The only way to secure ourselves from this kind of mess is reject “Progressive” ideas and their agents of violence. We need to ignore the Middle East aside from fair trade, close our borders to their immigration and start deporting and jailing the foreign radicals we catch in our midst.
Time to close the castle gates while there still may be some castle left to protect.

If the egyptian military allows for free elections, the majority will rule, and the minority of egyptians will pay the price for not being with the brotherhood.
