  8. cjunk / Paul, has a couple of videos worth watching… it gets to the point at 3.35 in the first video, the population increase is mostly from immigration from “non traditional” areas. Exactly the problematic questions we’ll need to answer to in Canada, although for different reasons.
    If the government can decide what kind of light bulbs you’ll use in your house, why can’t it tell you what to do with your “extra” bedroom?

  10. Sounds like communist Russia, shortly after the Bolsheviks took over, as described by Ayn Rand in her book “We the Living”. All homes were common property and the rooms in the house were allocated by the party. Wonder if Monbiot has read it, he certainly sounds like he would fit right into the story.

    It is absolutely mind boggling how some think that somehow they ‘ve got the right to tell others how to live and at the same time make sure under a penalty to see to it that the others comply.
    Of course the writer is socialist/fascist crossing into communist domain.
    The troubling part is that free thinkers have to defend the right of the idiot (a medical condition rather than an insult), due to the nature of freedom, spout the garbage that he comes up with.
    One thing though is true that if he did not have the platform to spread the nonsense, nobody would know.
    The other thing is that there may be enough of companion idiots to pick this up and run with it.
    There was a study done some years ago in regard of TV channels that sell things. The study found that @4% of the population will buy anything that is sold there, regardless of need for it.
    Thinking about that, there are probably more than 4% (25%-30%) of those that would agree with the ‘iot. Would that be enough to ignite fire under the ‘iot’s idea?

  24. I agree that this idea is crazy, but is it really that big a leap from existing policies? Think of progressive income tax and the way city taxes are calculated ; tax rates escalate with income and municipal taxes are based on home values instead of each resident paying equally for equal services (garbage, roads, etc.). The left has already established these concepts as “normal”. Classical liberals and libertarians have been losing ground for decades. So, a “big tax penalty for under-occupation” on granny for wanting to remain in her family home and friendly neighborhood is not as “out there” as it seems.
    As usual, the poor benefit and the rich are barely inconvenienced. It is the middle class that is too wealthy take advantage of the new entitlements and not rich enough to pay or evade the new penalties.

  29. We should not be too smug. But for the tenacity, intelligence and decency of Hon MP Eric Nielson; we would have had our own variation of this ‘progressive’ idea back in 1979. Turdo had this ‘common property eg housing’ idea when he passed his budget after he had trashed the BNA Act and written his own copy of Lenin’s 1919 Charter to give to us Canadians. Fortunately for us we had Eric Nielson as the leader of the opposition and he was far more intelligent than Turdo. Lelonde (I think) let out a budget leak (serious in those days) and the Turdo had his minnions out of the HOC attempting to deal with the budget issue. Eric seized the moment (did I mention Eric Nielson was a fighter pilot in WWII, whilst the Turdo cowered at home and went on excursions to support the likes of Castro and Mao and Stalin – he even liked Hitler at fist, then Hitler turned on his pal Stalin and the PET/Hitler love affair fell apart) and introduced and passed an amendment to the Rights and Freedoms thingie that would not allow the gument to billot people in a private house against the property owners wishes.
    Eric Nielson should be honored on Kate’s list of Magnificent Bastards, IMO. Maybe he is and I just don’t know. Eric is certainly one of my honored Magnificent Bastards and Canadians should know more about him. We owe him a lot, he was never honored for the work he did on behalf of our freedom. It was also great entertainment to watch the PET turdo squirm and grimance every time Eric stood up to ask a question. If the PC’s ever gave a gift to the PET and the turdoites (liberals of the day) it was NOT electing Eric Nielson as Leader of the PC Party. Joe Who and Lyin Brian were ‘gifts’.
    Eric really liked PMSH. Eric Nielson died two years ago and Kate honored him here. Old timers in the Yukon remember the Yukon Eric MP Days as our glory days. We were a proud, rich, independant people at that time; proud to call ourselves YUKONERS.

  32. Robert @ 6:43, this is exactly what happened. They, along with a squad of Red Guards, also trooped into a small flour mill owned by two brothers and said this is now ours, but you have to operate it for wages.

    I have, and it’s mine.
    I paid the income taxes on the money as I earned it, then GST for it when I bought the home, and all other taxes too.

  44. There’s nothing novel about Monbiot’s proposal. Both France and the Netherlands have or had fairly stringent controls over housing.
    What is strange is the complete inhumanity of Monbiot. People do have spare bedrooms, for the visits of family or friends, and these are often multi-use
    (I was reading that in Elizabethan houses the spare bedroom often housed the family chamber pot).
    It is believable that Monbiot has no friends, and is estranged from family.
    Again, children growing up, and the elders dying, will leave empty rooms in a home.
    I suppose that Monbiot would demand that beloved Aunt Matilda’s bedroom be rented to a Pakistani immigrant before her body is even cold.

  47. EBD, when I read what Monbiot advocates I am with what this British commenter “A Kulak” writes. It is not funny in the least and I can understand his somewhat excessive descriptive vocabulary. Bin there, done that.
    When the communists get as brazen as they have been lately it is real scary and no joke.

    There is another part to my post of 8:41.
    A short time later, a fellow who was a “radish” (Red on the outside and White on the inside)came to the house of one of the brothers and said you and your brother’s names are on a list for tomorrow morning.
    They knew they had to leave the town, but had no horses or wagons (confiscated) and this “radish” said he would help. He brought them some horses and wagons. They loaded a few bags of clothes etc, their children and with the horses hooves muffled with sacks left.
    This was not the only close call.
    Ultimately, a few years later, they escaped and came to Canada.
    There are no moderate socialists. They all ultimately want to confiscate your hard work.
