  7. I think people know he is a good man. He never responded to the vilification hurled at him. He did not respond to pictures of him with bullet holes in the forehead at protest rallies. He hoed a very tough row. I don’t know much about Mrs. Bush other than she vacationed in National Parks and is a class act.
    I think people miss that America. I know I do.

  8. Perhaps the fact the leftist are cheapskates and conservatives are not explains the difference in sales numbers.
    Or it could be that Clinton is a pathological liar and by the time his book came out we had heard enough of his lies.

  10. I think it is a bit too soon to judge W’s presidency but there is one flaw that is so glaring it is sufficient to tarnish his legacy.
    His refusal to take on his detractors led directly to the election of the worst president in the history of the US. When W decided to ‘take the high road’ the scum taking the low road convinced the American people that President W was a moron that needed to be replaced by a brainiac. Guess what? W is not a moron. Too bad the same can not be said for his replacement.

  11. It is an interesting book. I started reading it recently. He comes across as much much more intelligent and thoughtful as opposed to the narrative we’ve been fed all these years. There’s a lot about him I like. I can certainly understand why he made the decisions he did. And when you see the thought processes/intelligenc/evidence that went on to make the decisions, the left is seen as even more petty, vindictive and shallow than I ever thought they were. W believed that to fight back against his detractors and answer back would be a petty treatment of the office of the POTUS. Maybe he should have fought back more, I don’t know. But W has come across as much more classy than O has the last two years; O has tarnished the office many times over with his unseemly jibes at W and numerous twisted commentary about current events (the events leading up to the beer summit is just one example of many). And O gets angry in front of the camera when defending his presidency, even going so far as to bring in Billary to defend him?!!! There’s no dignity in how he has behaved.

  12. W was a class act and alway will be. His detractors will eventually die out and what is perceived to be a weakness(not confronting his detractors) will be overshadowed by the good things he did. He is in stark contrast to Obozo who, in comparison, appears classless.
    I miss W. But more importantly, a lot of Americans miss him too.

  14. Great book. I couldn’t put it down. Great insight into his early life.
    Most of the book is non-news and just great behind the scenes looks at everything you already knew.
    At the end he attempts to rationalize the compromises he made with the financial bailouts, but it’s the only open-ended chapter in the book. I think that will not work out in his favor like all the other ‘decisions’ he made.

  15. Apart from the minor point that 2 million is not more than 2.2 million, I would imagine that being flogged vigorously at discounted princes might be partly responsible.
    Clinton’s supporters were disappointed by his book. Yet sales continue, it’s 2.25 million now; he had twice the advance of Bush, he wrote it himself etc.
    Another factor — people who didn’t like Bush had to buy it e.g. Germany’s Shroeder in order to call Bush a liar — I imagine lots of Germans bought it to check that out.
    When the extremely unpopular Sam Goldberg died, there was a huge crowd at his funeral. Someone wondered about that & the answer came that Sam used to say “Give the people what they want & they’ll break down the doors to get in”
    Also CBC did write about the book’s large early sales, noting also that Clinton had praised it.

  18. Bl@ckbird, I think you rather miss the point: GWB, though far from perfect—like the rest of us—but judged with a savagery and monumentally negative bias that Democrats are spared, had/has gravitas. Grace under fire is admirable.
    Obama possesses none of this. For heaven’s sake, he’s even a poor WINNER: “What a maroon! What an ignoranimus”! (Thanks, Bugs.)

  19. I think by not confronting his detractors Bush was simply following a farmers wisdom. “Never get in a wrestling match with a pig. You’ll both get covered in mud and shit but the pig likes it.”

  20. The pic of W greeting returnee troops at Fort Hood…is memorable…..that female member striding to shake his hand looks like she would like to bear his children….contrast that to the pic of OBOZO striding toward the cameras/mics while the “racist cop” helps OBOZO’s buddy “Skip” down the steps.
    Then there is a pic of W helping democRAT senator/Grand Dragon/Bryd in the same spot.
    One pic is worth thousands of words……

    It has been a fault of Conservatives since forever, that refusal to support your own position. Jesus Himself said to be salt of the earth and lights unto the world. Here we Conservatives are desperately trying to lose our saltiness and hide our lights.
    As an old farmer once said, “It may be a messy job but someone has to clean the pig sty and that involves getting in there with the pig”.

    That’s a good point Joe. My thinking however is that, yes we will have to clean up after these guys but I still don’t think we need to get down to their level to fight them. I think that taking the high road will pay off in the end. I do realize that slow playing the situation and taking the high road can be very frustrating but it gives the msm less quotes and talking points.
    I think/hope that we are getting to the point where can be more confrontation but fight using our rules not theirs.

  35. Read and enjoyed the book. Happy that history has begun to be kind to him so early but too soon for me to understand the apparent lack of self defense against the edia smears. This lead Obama not a good plan.

  39. Had a visit from an Uber Liberal young Gay here today. He works for Indigo/Chapters so we got to talking about books. I told him I have Dubya’s book downstairs on the bookshelf and he would be welcome to it. Amazingly he told me he had already purchased it and was going to be reading it soon.
    There’s hope for us yet.

    I agree entirely. And he let Condi Rice ruin his second term. Rice is a Scrowcroftian Arabist. She saw the mass-murderer Abbas as Martin Luther King. They armed and trained terrorists (PLO directly, Hamas indirectly) while fighting the “war on terror”. They didn’t acknowledge or deal with the Iranian threat. He continued with the totally bogus “road map” for the Arab-Israeli conflict, i.e., land for dick all. Oh, and he utterly misread Putin, as did Rice despite her PhD in Russian history. I got Putin from the get go; I have no courses in Russian history.
    A nice decent man like his father but his is a FAILED PRESIDENCY and will be judged so down the road I feel.

  41. Yes Me No Dhimmi you have some great points there. I have never been comfortable with the Bushes association with the Arabs. I always thought that his business dealings with the Bin Laden family were odious. It would be like Churchill doing business with the Hitler family during WWII.

  45. To me, basically a good man trying to do his best (you can’t have someone as solid as Laura marry you without it meaning something). Not an idealogue, but perhaps unconciously part of the Nelson Rockefeller GOP tradition (through his father), i,e, still thought government had an ultimate responsibility to “save the day”, instead of letting the real world of risk v. reward sort things out.
    Wish he had let the Chapter 11 process work its way through the investment bank failures (instead of letting Paulson (sp?) convince him that it was a “crisis” and selfishly suggesting who should be saved (Goldman) and who should be left to fall).
    Also really troubled by GWB’s and current POTUS support for Saudis. These guys are clearly the ultimate source of terrorist/Islam Brotherhood funding. Until US (and the rest of us) actually embraces GWB’s “you are either with the terrorists or with us” line in the sand, the war on Islamic fascism will not be real.

  46. I am enjoying the book as well. It’s clear and straightforward reflecting the author. I wonder whether it was as much a matter of fighting back or more a case of being buried by the media. How can one fight back is the message will never see the light of day?
