Her article was great. I thought she made the point well that it is about the insular nature of it and that the non-elite feel, quite rightly, that the elite don’t understand them. They run in different circles and are self selecting out.
There is an economist out of Quebec who made a similar point about income gaps. University educated men in white collar careers tend to marry university educated women in white collar careers and both tend to have higher than average income. The irony is that womens emancipation exacerbates family based income gaps.
Anyway, this is why we have a democracy to force those in power to understand, accomodate the broader population not just those they attend parties with.

hmm… I scored a 170 (and once I have kids, hopefully a 190+), not too sure how I feel about that. I’ve never really perceived myself as a member of the elite, though it’s probably a bad sign that I was sitting in SBUX when I read the article…
Murray’s original column in the WAPO is far more interesting than Wente’s ripoff.

Scored -100 with the only positive points being that I did watch the Sopranos years ago. Might explain why I got totally fed up living in Vancouver. Some other questions to distinguish the “elite” from others would be +20 for having had botox treatments and -20 for not knowing what botox was. Also negative points for actually driving your SUV off road.

The only NASCAR race in Canada is the road course at Circuit de Gilles Villeneuve It’s a huge event just because Montreal is the wildest city in NA. This is the same track as the F1 race. F1 was for snobs and then they realized that they lost a huge market when they stopped F1 there a couple of years ago. They brought it back this year.
A new super speedway for NASCAR is being built in Fort Erie. Jeff Gordon is part of the team designing the track. I think it is going to be right beside the Race Track (Thoroughbreds). This will be the first super speedway in Canada.
I’ve only seen three races in my life. I saw an Enduro race at Watkins Glen, NY. It was an ultra cool. Plus I got to check out Cornell U. I saw 1 street race in downtown Hamilton which was open wheel racing but a series below F1 or Indy. My brother and I and my brother’s friend and his brother saw the old Molson Indy at Exhibition Place in TO. We had free 3 day passes to everything. On Saturday, before the big race on Sunday, we watched the time trials, visited the teams garages, experienced the sound, and everything. We decided to walk over the bridge at Lakeshore to visit Ontario Place. The unbelievable thing was that we saw Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash and the Carter Cash Family for free on a Saturday afternoon matinee (this would have been around 1992). The stage rotated slowly and we lay out on the grass and listened to this classic country music. We could hear the engines in the background but the music was clear and strong.
Instapundit has been describing them as “OUR CREDENTIALED-NOT-EDUCATED GENTRY CLASS”, references to which you can find sprinkled throughout his blog, for quite a while now.
Just because they’ve got a degree or more from a major university (often in a toilet paper subject) doesn’t make them elite, nor part of a meritocracy especially when so many are trust fund types.
I suppose I’m the only one out here who hasn’t got a clue what the hell this is all about?

I like Thomas Sowell’s definition of elites or “intellectuals”. He considers elites those who purely deal in ideas like McGuinty, Rae or Iggy. People that have a real job like Gates, Jobs or Balsillie are not intellectuals.
They, like Reagan or Churchill, are responsible for their actions and results unlike those in academia or cloud dwellers as I like to call them like Rae or McGuinty that can destroy our province economically and then just walk away, unaffected by their actions and never personally responsible.

Thank you to all the posters who put forward alternatives for “elites”. The old “useful idiots” phrase comes to mind. The article was fun, but claiming that today’s elites are marked by intelligence is simply not true. Intelligence does not mindlessly buy into AGW, socialism, radical feminism, or the usual host of leftie causes. Today’s elites are marked, more than anything else, by jargon. Parrot the phrases (and brainlessly adopt the mindset behind them) and you brand yourself as an “insider”. When confronted with reality, immediately spout jargon. If none comes to mind, spout jargon which attempts to slur the messenger. Believe me, I work in the “elite” world, and I cannot believe the rampant stupidity and the relentless quest to get ahead – to “prove” that one truly is an elite, regardless of how much B.S. one has to absorb and later spew. All the kind phrases about helping others has much more to do with how I perceive and present myself than effectively helping anyone. It is true that most of these self-proclaimed elites come from a privileged background. However, this simply supports the idea that they are a new version of the French aristocracy, with no more inherent skills (and probably even less intelligence) than the previous version. Pitchforks, anyone?
Not sure it officially stands for anything anymore, but at the start, it stood for Microsoft.
