A couple is facing a $750 hospital bill after they had to leave a ward in Kingston General Hospital’s maternity ward because a Muslim woman was breastfeeding her newborn.
John Kennedy said he and another man were also forbidden from using the sink in the shared bathroom to dampen cloths so they could clean their babies.
He and his wife and the other couple were moved out of the room on religious grounds that were made clear to him by medical staff on the floor, who said unrelated men are forbidden from being in the room while the Muslim woman was breastfeeding.
I think John himself nailed it when he said

I thought hospitals were public areas where we are all treated alike regardless of religion, race or gender.
Based on the comments by common sense folks, the hospital handled this VERY badly and should have moved the Muslims and not billed anyone. However, if they insisted on it being paid, then the Muslim couple should be made to pay the tab.
Yes Paul in Calgary, I agree with you. I left Toronto 8 1/2 years ago for many reasons, but one big one were all the Muslims – honestly, the dark side of me always wanted to rip off the women’s head coverings/burkas/ hijabs. This is a religion which hates women and children – especially girls!!

when I was oh, about 7 or 8 yrs old, I was forced, FORCED by hospital staff to lay naked on a bed right next to the hall door.
the hospital issued toddlers pajamas had feet in them and I couldn’t pull the drawstring up past my thighs. the top was equally too small and went down to my bellybutton.
I was not permitted to wear my own underpants.
I was not permitted to pull a blanket over me.
I was not permitted to pull the curtain, move to a bed with more privacy, close the goddamm door, etc etc etfrigginCETERA.
who do you turn to when it’s the *teachers* doing the bullying? what is the procedure to become a teacher’s pet and escape detentions and grillings at 6 yrs of age until you sob so much you can’t breath properly???

I am so tired of this i wish our PM would address this issue it is a big deal they are out breeding us and manipulating our system sooner or later they will run this country i think we should have a 20 year ban on all immigration and start a program for canadians to start havingm orek ids and also make it possible for women to stay home if they want to and raise there kids and not be in a situation where money is alway’s tight . start cutting taxes and social programs and pass those saving’s onto canadians we can sustain our selves but we are so finacially overburdended it is almost impossible for us to have more than two kids and live comfortable on one income and no i don’t put a dollar value on kids i will have five or six regardless but i don’t think people should fear having kids because of the financial struggles. I’ve been confronted with this sort of nonsense on a labour ward. The husband tried to demand only females present for the Caesarean section his wife needed. We simply told them both that the obstetrician and anesthesiologist were male and that’s the way it was going to be. The objections ended right there. They simply push until someone stands up to them and then the bs stops.
I suspect the same thing would have happened in Kingston had the staff, or even the other family members in the room simply said, “No, I’m not leaving my wife’s side because of someone else’s cultural peculiarities. I’ve every right to be here and I intend to stay.”
I know someone who had a similar experience with an uptight muslima (RE: baby care in a designated area). In a nutshell, she basically told the hag to bite her.
I notice that the hospital is citing “privacy legislation” in not saying anything about this case. It seems that all of the patient “privacy” laws are designed to let hospitals cover up their mistakes and do nothing to protect patient privacy. I agree that all of the hospital administrators who were involved in this insanity, especially if they are female, should be sent to Saudi Arabia for a year or so to see what kind of a reception their cultural beliefs get.
If I was in this situation I would probably make sure that any food I ate in the room were things like BLT sandwiches and a lot of pork rinds taking care to ensure that the mess I made was at the bathroom door.
One curious thing I’ve noticed is that all of the Saudi women I see seem to be pregnant and having their kids in Canada. These kids will automatically become Canadian citizens. Is this some sort of jihadist breeding program that’s going on?
They should have stood their ground and refused to leave. This sort of crap happens because Canadians are too ‘nice’ and let people ‘walk all over them’. That’s how pushy people like Muslims are able to get away with this crap. If we don’t stand up for our rights we will surely loose them. I know for a fact that this sort of incident would never happen at our local hospital, we don’t tolerate that sort of politically correct BS. If that makes us ‘redneck Western Canadians’ well tough sh!t. They can take their multicultural BS and stick it where the sun don’t shine.

No. I think the moral of the story is that there are people in Canada who think other people are too dirty to be in the presence of. I’m told a similar situation existed in the southern US a few years before I was born. These days, I thought we would all agree this was wrong.
The strange thing is that public breastfeeding is allowed in Saudi Arabia and other muslim countries. This is another case of creating problems that don’t exist. All the hospital needs is to have the religious rulings on hand.
BTW, a scholar has also ruled that it is permissable to breastfeed your foreign driver so that he becomes your son and can mix openly with your family but let’s not go there.
In fact thinking about it logically we have the solution (see my post above) first of all the muslim woman breastfeeds the men on the ward so that they become her sons and then the prohibition no longer applies.
There’s always a simple way round these problems.
Anyone fancy writing a new policy for the hospital to incorporate this change.
This incident is only the tip of the iceberg of what is happening. There is much more to come.
Ths hospital really blew it. They should have told the Muslim couple ‘This is a public ward, and we will not prevent other patients’ family members from staying in the ward or using the sink because it offends your religious beliefs. If this is unacceptable to you, you have an option: stay in a private room, at your own expense.’

He works in a hospital. It sounds as if it was his choice to be there & provide most of the care. There is no need to be washing diapers for yourself.
And HE complained, not the muslims, which is probably why he was moved.

As one person said in commenting, it wasn’t so long ago that hospitals required breast-feeding mothers to have private rooms.
Hospitals are total institutions, the same ruthless efficiency that had his wife life being saved before he could even slip on a gown, probably resulted in an instant decision to move the complainer. He shouldn’t have been charged without warning. [If that is what happened]

And then he was told that, because of another couple’s religious beliefs, he had to leave the room, he couldn’t use the sink – of course he complained! I would have complained, because the requests were unreasonable.

Yeah, I missed that. But the same consideration applies. My point [Barbara] is that hospitals run by rigid rules. If you want anything which is not what they regularly do, good luck. Especially in maternity. Just refusing a silver nitrate wash, totally unncecessary for most, required several arguments with staff who “always” do it. Getting your way requires referral to a senior, signing of forms etc. And to avoid having the chord cut immediately, you had better be ready to scream. etc.
Obiously it would be nice to have more details. What did the other couples do, for example? But demanding to stay, or refusing to leave while the other woman was breast-feeding, will get him a quick decision make for bureaucratic reasons, not fairness. [see Beagle above]

I just checked this. It is not as straightforward as I thought, but I think the doctor’s inclination is a bit “aggressive”.
Remember to keep some of that outrage for the next election or it’ll only get worse.
The Kennedys being moved is called “an upgrade”? I DON’T THINK SO.
They were FORCED to move because they could not properly care for Mrs. Kennedy or their newborn in the room they were assigned BY THE HOSPITAL ADMIN., given the HOSPITAL’S stipulation about their not using the sink in THEIR room, because of A MUSLIM RULE.
The hospital’s billing the Kennedys because of “an upgrade” is absolutely outrageous. Let them call it an upgrade. Mr. Kennedy needs to call it an accommodation that severely inconvenienced his family for the comfort and convenience of another family — and point out that that’s not “accommodat[ing] [all] patients’ religious and cultural values,” as Kellie Kitchen, the hospital’s program manager in obstetrics and pediatrics, asserts. In this case, the Muslim family’s religious and cultural values were accommodated. Certainly, the Kennedys’ were not.
This is political correctness gone completely amok. Because of their unreasonable demands of non-Muslims, by far the majority of the patients, the Muslim family should have been moved into a private room and they should have been asked to pay the bill for the “upgrade.” But, of course, our cowardly, pc-accommodating wimps in the hospital admin. made sure that “no Muslim was harmed in the making of accommodations.”
I hope some sympathetic lawyer takes up their case and socks it to the Kingston General Hospital. They need to get their priorities straight.
