Another day, another severe thunderstorm watch. If you’re living on the prairies right now you’ve probably been seeing a lot of oddly dark skies and ridiculous amounts of rain and hail. Or maybe you haven’t been looking at the skies at all, because you’re too busy with a wet-vac and a mop cleaning up your basement.
Time for a little weather music, then: from 1943, here’s the late Lena Horne singing Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler’s Stormy Weather.

Bernie at plancksconstant.org’s blog tells what starts off as a touching story about a Palestinian woman named Raida Abu Mustafa, whose baby boy, Mohammed, received lifesaving treatment in Israel for his rare disease; one Israeli Jew who’d lost his son to the conflict in the region even donated $55,000 towards the treatment.
    An Israeli documentary reporter described how the mother was at her son’s bedside night and day – “she didn’t eat, she lost weight and she cried.” It’s all very touching.
    But then…
    “From an innocent conversation about religious holidays, Raida Abu Mustafa launched into a painful monologue about the culture of the shahids – the martyrs – and admitted, during the complex transplant process, that she would like to see her son perpetrate a suicide bombing attack in Jerusalem.
    “‘Jerusalem is ours,’ she declared. ‘We are all for Jerusalem, the whole nation, not just a million, all of us. Do you understand what that means – all of us?'”

    Rhetorical question #51,772: if Griffin made the same quip about Obama’s daughters, would the CNN reporter laugh?

    Just got back from St Walburg SK, and it was still cheaper than Calgary. Heck, Lloydminister was 89.

  20. “Sormy Weather” was first performed by Ethel Waters at the Cotton Club in Harlem in 1933. A lot of artists sang this classic, none however could get into it like Billie Holiday. (My opinion.) Thanks!
    Imagine listening to that song on a stormy night in 1933, on a GE “Cathedral Style” radio, and the lightning crackling through the speaker every time a lightning bolt bolt hit NYC!

  31. Had beautiful gentle rain overnight in Woodstock, Ontario.
    Crops in this part of southwestern Ontario are about two weeks ahead normal from other years, storm wise there have been sporadic damaging pop ups throughout the area with high temps during the daytime.
    And once again it’s mid July and the “robins” have stopped their early morning singing for the rest of the season, just like clock work.
    All we hear now are cardinals, some goldfinches, grackles, mourning doves in the early hours.

    Ken: You can listen to him here: DennisMillerRadio.com I’m actually a subscriber to his podcast. A yearly membership works out to about $4.00 per month. I find that’s a small investment for all the great hilarity the program brings me 5 days per week.
    Batb: Your observation that Dennis Miller, an American, knows more (in fact, much more) about our “Human Rights” Commissions than most Canadians is absolutely true and a most astute observation. It’s also a stinging indictment of most Canadians for not taking a more active role in their society. I don’t think it’s much of a stretch to say that the CHRC and their provincial counterparts are only able to get away with the horrendous things they do *because* Canadians are so apathetic!

  46. Gas has always been a few cents cheaper in Edmonton than in Calgary. Maybe it’s the cost of actually looking out your window in the morning and seeing something that Calgarians are paying for. The old “refineries are in Edmonton” doesn’t hold water either because when I lived on Cowtown I could always drive south to Nanton for cheaper gas.
    I will defer on the legislature producing excess gasses in Redmonton.

  49. This is going to shock a lot of people me being optimistic. Frankly Canada has just replaced ALL the jobs from the man caused depression named Obama.
    Not the best of jobs, but where back to a normal unemployment figure.
    In fact where doing better than anyone else on the Planet for Recovery if not a chance for a real future for our young. People have told me that are in the know. Three years tops if not sooner before the deficit is balanced.
    I thank God every day we had an Economist like Harper as PM in power when the storm erupted.
    Sure some Provinces suffer more than others.
    We all know why. The Dippers who have all but bankrupted America.
    No housing crisis.
    Oil up the kazoo. Natural resources that have mostly been left untouched. I’m telling you folks where in the cat bird seat for the time being.
    The HRC’s are in steady decline, & are rightly a joke.
    To my shock things are improving in the Canada’s, including freedom.
    Compared to the rest of the World, where on the Ritz.

  50. Canada getting new fighter planes.
    Side question, how come the US flag is in reverse on the plane with all the other nations, and last?
    Meaning the stars are on the top right corner of the flag, like the US soldiers wearing it in Afg and Iraq. Aren’t they suppose to be top left?
