Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

"Smalldeadanimals doesn't speak for the people of Saskatchewan" - Former Sask Premier Lorne Calvert
"I got so much traffic after your post my web host asked me to buy a larger traffic allowance." - Dr.Ross McKitrick
Holy hell, woman. When you send someone traffic, you send someone TRAFFIC.My hosting provider thought I was being DDoSed. - Sean McCormick
"The New York Times link to me yesterday [...] generated one-fifth of the traffic I normally get from a link from Small Dead Animals." - Kathy Shaidle
"You may be a nasty right winger, but you're not nasty all the time!" - Warren Kinsella
"Go back to collecting your welfare livelihood." - Michael E. Zilkowsky
Oh the humantiy!
What an absolutely stupid idea.
A $19 billion defecit? Nothing a massive government layoff wouldn’t fix.
“We’re just trying to find creative ways of generating additional revenues,” er try savings.
“The idea is not to turn a motorist’s vehicle into a mobile billboard, but rather to create a platform for motorists to show their support for existing good working organizations,” he said.
They still have working organizations in Calif*&ednia??? How many points for running over a greenie while flashing an ad for GE?
Justthinkin
You are somewhat confused….GE supports CAP and TAX to sell more windmills….
Technically they are GREEN—-politically at least.
BP is GREEN because they finance OBOZO and stand to profit from CAP and TAX……
Know your enemy……
It was bound to happen eventually anyways. They already have distracting digital billboards and neon lights at the side of the road. I’m just waiting for the moment when red lights will broadcast an ad into your car. “This driving intermission brought to you by Geico”.
My personalized plate message will be a multicolored rapidly flashing strobe by the way.
Also, is anyone surprised this is coming out of California? We can’t drive with cell phones because of “distracted driving” laws but we can stare at someone else’s distracting adverts everywhere we go.
Wow, doesn’t that plan contravene the constitution? After all, everyone has a right of association. What if I hate company x, or company y? And why would I have license plates that would advertise on my own vehicle when I get nothing out of it?
Hmmmmm, how much will it cost to put this thing in place, how many morre unionized government employees will be required? I bet they spend a dollar to generate $0.25 of revenue. Of course, the system will have to include real time GPS tracking of your car so the gov’t knows everywhere you go and where you stop.
Looking on the bright? side, their system will get hacked right away (despite all the unionized gov’t employees) and when you stop for the light, the car in front of you will be showing porn. The GPS will be hacked so that the hacker’s car is shown parked in front of the State House at all times. Criminals will hack in and the number on the plate will change every three minutes helping with the getaway.
Someone above suggested they simply save money. Won’t work. Not enough jobs-for-friends or votes to be gained.
You know, some ideas are just, on the face of it, plain bad. You know it. I know it. But, somehow, some way, a government bureaucrat will think it’s the best thing since sliced bread.
If nothing else this provides a very good argument for legalizing Cannabis.
Legalize a harmless substance worth BILLIONS!
OR
Fill the roads with expensive, distracting ads and watch the mayhem.
scrib:
excellent point. a constitutional challenge awaits. One that will squander some of the revenue “earned”.
It’s hare-brained ideas like this that got Californicatia into this economic mess. Some people are just congenitally stupid; there is no cure.
Allow me to explain. Sometime back in the 1960s the state had a Village Idiot Convention in Sacramento, and most of them liked it so much they decided to stay.
They enjoy dipping vegetables in the boiling broth at The Melting Pot. They haven’t figured out how to cook the wheelchairs yet.
You said it Kate. Unexpected consequences.
We started planting flowers on the freeways in Edmonton (Such as they are). Had to end the program as it became such a distraction, more accidents where happening near the colorful flowered sites.
JMO
If this goes through and isn’t overturned in court, expect it to be followed by an optional fee to have a license plate that doesn’t do this, the same way you can get a personalized license plate.
Kate, why do you spend time thinking up clever titles for your posts? Why not just file everything under “The World is Being Run by Crazy People” and be done with it?
These Advert ideas have a place in Politics, Try this:
A Full size headshot of Boxer made into an Urinal Sticky….”Take a WIZ on Marxism”, California needs all the recycled Urine they can drink…
The Amber alert angle has some promise. Any alert I have seen on an overhead sign says ‘watch for license plate number XYZ’. So they just send a text to XYZ’s license plate that says ‘Hey, this is the Amber Alert car! Run me off the road quick!!!’
I wish a major donor would give all the pro-life groups in California to put an ad on every license plate for 3 months.
Actually I think this could work.
“but as a way to display personalized messages – broadcasting the driver’s allegiance to a sports team or an alma mater, for example”
If only someone would come up with a label or decal, sticky would be best, about the width of a bumper but not as long. They could be pre-printed with different messages, maybe promoting a sports team or an alma mater. They could call it, oh I don’t know, a bumper sticker. Too crazy?
Putting distracting lights on the back of every car in the most over-crowded driving environment in North America? Its GENIUS!
The roads will be deserted in no time at all because -everyone- will be in hospital. Awesome.
I KNOW California is strapped financially, and being from B.C. can sympathize with their plight, and admire their ingenuity in trying to scrape up every red cent they can,BUT, this idea is utterly ridiculous!
Licence plates are way too SMALL! Drivers should be encouraged to install wide screen TV sets in place of their rear window, and they can sell all the advertising space they want.
Imagine driving home on the freeway, viewing one of the Budweiser beer commercials on the big screen in front of you!
Notice how they’re getting bigger and bigger and BIGGER!!!!
For F***’s sakes stop!
Whew!
Okay, now. Proceed with caution, and just ignore those bikini clad babes. Your wife will be proud of you.
The California MVB can probably charge every screener a couple of thousand bucks a year for his permit, the motorist can sell advertising space, and everybody wins.
Even the ambulance drivers who get to work SO much overtime.
If you’re going to go crazy, do it in style, not in small, mincing increments.
Good point M and RSP. Unintended consequences for sure Kate – I’m thinking increased road rage; inevitably, there will end up being laws surrounding what you or the DMV can program your license plate ticker to say. Surely free speech will be limited; perhaps, even used as an example to further support restrictions to the constitutional amendment. I can forsee problems with license plates that insult Muhammad – slit throats dotted along the Los Angles freeway system. What about obnoxious or obscene messages? Can of worms about to be opened leading to yet another unnecessary crisis and bureaucracy.
California’s financial mess is what happens when the village idiots are the council.
The little cartoon reminds me that our family has not purchased any Coca-Cola since Copenhagen. I’m sure they have not noticed though.
These cars would become IUD targets. But if that is what they want – more stressed out citizens and deranged people – perhaos this is Darwin at work yet again.
Geez L
There’s that IUD thing again! Please get your mind off of vaginal insertions and concentrate on the subject at hand-please?
Much more interesting article on a stolen 56 pickup on that newspaper site.
