Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Y’know, Conan’s hair would look good on the masthead of this blog.
Colin,
Sorry, but I can’t stop, it’s too much fun. Besides, I want to know where the “Bush Doctrine” is written down, really, and I think bleet knows. The “Monroe Doctrine” was laid out in an address to Congress in 1823. I am sure that there is a similar formal declaration for the Bush doctrine *somewhere*. After all, he is sure of it, and we know he wouldn’t lie to us.
Hey bleet, you did not answer the question regarding about when Obozo puts on the Harlem verbiage. Furthermore, keep up “eh”, Gore will not debate anybody for fear of being blown out of the water and being shown up for the big liar that he is.
Hey tim –
Are you gonna quote Krauthammer’s column defending Palin for not knowing what the Bush Doctrine is, where he blathers on in a mealy-mouthed fashion sayin’ how there’s so MANY meanings of the Doctrine that we can’t blame poor little ol’ Sarah?
(When even by his own definitions(s) the meaning of the Doctrine is unilateralism, for the cause of self-defense, or spreading democracy, or whatever) FAIL!
But keep on with the “poor ignorant Sarah” stuff, Tim. You’re all so ‘poor’ and victimized by the Big Bad Liberal Media!! For a bunch of self-reliant tough-talkin’ Randians y’all sue do a lot of whining.
you know the sidekicks these tawk-show guys have….?
like Conan’s ….and johnny’s ?
you know,i’ve always wanted to be one….i think i’d be a great asset xly….and prolly develop a following of my own……i wouldn’t be a suckup either…well, not at first anyway….not until i got my fan base cemented….and a few endorsements for stuff….and not dandruff shampoo neither…or preparation H….high end stuff that uses like lasers and so on and so forth..
and i’d hire bleet as my chauffeur pool boy doormat whipping boy dogwalker and punching bag….and scullery maid…
Tim…he took the bait. Ha!!
Hey Colin…even Kate got in to the game!
Hilary’s black.

I love it! Two of my favorite people:)
As far as Kate and “rickfisher” go, instead of defending Pallin from the charge that her persona is a phoney put-on, they attempt to make the claim of “well the ‘other side’ does it too!”
Wow, what a retort, huh? And so telling…..
bleet,
I’m sorry, I don’t know what you mean. Where is the formal “Bush Doctrine” written down? I want to know because it is not at all clear to me that Sarah mishandled the question:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/11/sarah-palins-charlie-gibs_n_125772.html
“enunciated”, let’s get a definition there.
“TRANSITIVE VERB: 1. To pronounce; articulate.”
So, is there a formal pronouncement of the Bush Doctrine, or is it just a collection of ideas put together by pundits? If it is a formal declaration, then Palin sure looks stupid, but if it is just an informal collection, put together by the kind of left wing pundits that Gibson reads, then, forgive me for thinking this, but maybe she was justified in asking for clarification. September of 2002 should be a pretty good hint for you to start looking.
I would hate to think that you were not going to answer a simple direct question, that must have a simple answer.
Bleet:
Krauthammer was right on the vagueness of the Bush Doctrine. If memory serves, even Cheney has publically said there is no defined doctrine.
But it should be duly noted that krauthammer has sadi that he thought Palin to be unqualified for POTUS. It’s been a year since then but i doubt she has changed his mind. Perhaps if she proves herself a quick study that could change…
I truly hope that bleet will elucidate us with his vast knowledge and explain the Bush Doctrine. No doubt GWB would like to know about it as well because I’ve always thought that the “Bush Doctrine’ was more the figment of leftist’s fevered imagination than extant documents or even verbal doctrine
Well, I guess there can be some sport to jerking around the resident troll(s). Personally, I derive no satisfaction from it. But heck, if our gracious hostess is even getting in on the hunt, who am I to argue?
Bleet
Are you a member of Acorn?
I am curious as to in what way the Governor is “unqualified”.
Anyone who takes a good look at the positions she has held, and her accomplishments while in office, would have to think that she is more qualified than any of the other three that ran in 2008.
Furthermore, she has the courage, and strength of character that very few in politics have today.
bleet:
just like with GWB talkin’ like a halfwit hayseed (even though he’s an aristocratic blueblood with an elite education)
Er, didn’t you spend most of 2000-2008 dismissing GWB as a half-wit hayseed, and completely discounting his Yale and Harvard degrees? Would you do us a favour, and make up your mind (presupposing, of course, that you’re actually in possession of one)?
Bleet, you’re just jealous because YOU’RE not on TV. Deal with it.
Apparently, she’s coming to help out on a breast cancer fundraiser in the heart and soul of NDP land (Hamilton) and some people are upset about it:
Sarah Palin coming to Hamilton
I do apologize. I should pick a more worthy troll. Just not sure where I can find one. If you go over to a lefty site to argue with them there, they just start deleting your more cutting posts.
As Sarah Palin finished her brilliant performance on Conan, I glanced over at Bleet, who had a look of astonishment on his face, vaguely similar to the look on Spock’s face when he brain was missing. And I remembered, his brain is missing…….
…of course I understand Bleet trolls because he has no self-esteem, BOOM! Taste my keyboard troll.
Lee: to put it bluntly, she’s a lightweight when it comes to policy, particularly foreign policy.
Up until she was the vp nom she had shown no real interest in national and foreign affairs. To be a truly successful leader of teh free world you have to eat sleep and drink these issues. Granted between 11/9 and 9/11 it didn’t seem that foreign affairs were as pressing as they were from 1917 and 1989 but poat 9/11 they are vital to success (witness obama’s catastrophic failure). Charles Krauthammer and many others have documented this weakness and couric et al exploited it in ’08.
I doubt that these things are simply learned cram-style – youhave to have an interest in it – and she has shown nil interest and thus in the opinion of many she is not qualified to be potus.
Gord, i disagree.
Her speech in Hong Kong showed a pretty good grasp of issues. Her op ed on Israel was right on according to the “experts”.
I dont know what anyone expects to see from any candidate, bearing in mind that those who are in the White House have much more information.
Joe Biden was supposed to be a big deal in international issues, and look how that turned out.
Nobody denies her expertise on energy issue.
She has put out a couple of op-eds on Afghanistan.
She is underestimated to a large degree.
The op-eds and speeches post the election done to rehabilitate her image unfortunately. I do not see how they make her competent prior to the election. And until i see her in an interview discussing the issues and showing she can think on her feet (something a possibly ghost-written speech or op-ed would not show) on these issues i remain a skeptic.
As for her understanding of the energy issues I would say she is little better versed in the international aspect than ed stelmach and that isn’t saying much.
Joe biden could somewhat talk the talk on foreign issues, but he was/is a moron and emotionally a loose cannon and he should not be VPotus. I do not see how his incompetency puts Palin in a better light. (I just finished reading how he was back when he was running for POTUS in ’88 (what it takes – ben Kramer) – shocking that anyone even considers him worthy of any elected office.
Gord Tulk – I live in the Yukon and I know of Sarah Palin before she was well known to most people; while she was ‘only’ Governor of the biggest state in America. She got a pipeline deal DONE between Alaska and the lower 48 via the Yukon and Alberta. It had been tied up in land claims , enviroweenies , the really ‘unfit’ gument jokers in the Yukon,….Governor Palin went directly to Foothills Pipeline, who owned the corridor – and then she told the incompetents what would be happening and how they could help. The people in the Yukon (all the groupies were squawking) were way out of their depth as the Governor answered each and every argument in a bullet proof manner.
The Governor of Alaska has a genuine and gracious presence and she has an incredible memory for facts and figures (she did not even rely on notes – she just had back=up notes in case she needed a direct quote). I have been told that she has a photographic memory. I watched the whole thing unfold with shock and awe!
She cleaned up the corruption in the Alaska Leg. right away. Alaska citizens in Alaska own Alaska’s resources – they all got a great big cheque in the mail (thousands, each) in the years that Governor Palin was Governor. Yep, she redistributed the wealth – you betcha – from corrupt to the rightful owners! She is one fine lady, IMO.
Jema: i agree with everything you have noted.
However, does she know anything about pipeline issues in Europe? How much does she know about the geopolitical impact of shale gas extraction on NG supply and price (now practically infinite and likely never to go above $6 for any extended period for the next century) ? What does she about THAI and deep water oil ?
She was/is very strong on domestic Alaska issues – she has nil experience beyond that and has shown no conclusive proof that she has much understanding of issues outside of the realm. (she certainly did not do so during the ’08 campaign and that was a very significant factor in obama’s victory)
Slightly to tweak a line from that wondrous Zombie Ayn Rand thing that was so popular on teh intertubes a while back, this Palin woman is a standing threat to the heterosexuality of young Libertarian women everywhere.
(She’s in Zombie Ayn Rand and Bill Shatner is too, and come to think of it I’m not sure you couldn’t say the same about him. Sorry, Indy, I know he’s your captain, but he’s no Leonard Nemoy.)
Gord, the issue i have is in how people are being judged.
Biden was judged to be “expert” on foreign policy.
Palin is judged to be “not expert”.
Maybe the method of judging these people needs to be examined.
As far as Obama’s victory is concerned, it is pure folly to lay that at the feet of Sarah Palin. McCain and his people screwed up that election.
There is nobody in this world who is expert on everything. A president does not have to be an engineer. They hire engineers to advise them.
The most valuable asset of an executive is to be able to recognize a good idea when they see one.
Lee:
The judgement on biden was incorrect, the judgement on Palin was and may still be correct.
There were many follies in the election – one of the most significant was mccain picking an unqualified VPOTUS nominee as it destroyed his whole competence Meme. Just look at how the polls declined post her speech as more people came to see her flaws. (i thought and still think she has great potential – she has amazing hutzpah – but that in and of itself is not enough to make her qualified)
As for the engineering analogy, it doesn’t wash. One of the key distinguishing characteristics of great political leaders is that they had a deep understanding of the issues before them. Palin does not have that.
Just look at how the polls declined post her speech as more people came to see her flaws.
I really did not know how to respond to your previous posts here, Gord. I had to balance two thoughts in my mind: 1) I normally find that a person who posts the way you have been in this thread to be quite poorly researched in their analysis of Governor Palin; and 2) I normally find your posts to be well thought out and demonstrating a keen analytical mind.
With the above quote you do demonstrate that on this issue (notwithstanding your normally excellent posts) you have not done your homework. It really does not take much work to understand that McCain was behind in the polls, took an instant lead after Palin’s initial national speech and held onto that lead over the next few weeks. Despite the relentless and vicious attacks against the Governor, the lead held. It was after the financial crisis became public and McCain’s handling of same that Obama regained the lead. The vicious attacks continued; the margin of Obama’s lead fluctuated with the normal variance that accompanies polls but no more than that. In short, Palin was an asset to the McCain/Palin ticket, but not enough to overcome the negativity associated with the handling of a major issue by the Leader. The vicious attacks may have made her opponents hate her more, but did not detract from the supporters’ support. This is the way it should be: the polls should reflect a perception of the Leader and the assistant should be an assistant.
That you somehow miss what is relatively so easy to grasp indicates to me that you have deeper issues with Palin that are not tied to an objective analysis of information. There are valid reasons to critique Governor Palin; however to conclude that “holes” in her resume somehow equate to “unqualified” has never been satisfactorally established. When you are prepared to do a thorough and exhaustive examination of the information, you will find that Jema54’s post at 2:22am is only a summary. Palin’s record is stellar on the issues that she has been involved in. It is her intelligence and her managerial capabilities that have enabled her to succeed where others have failed.
When you are prepared to give Palin a fair hearing, you will find that many like her more the more they find out about her. I can see by your posts here that that day is not today, but I look forward optimisticaly to the day when Gord Tulk uses his normal objectivity in the examination of the record of Governor Palin.
Bravo Brent!
Thanks Brent – good post.
My wife, daughter and myself watched the first speech she did as the VP Nominee, we were all chuckling with delight, so refreshing to hear a real person on the national stage.
Sarah Palin is no more or less qualified than Barak Obama and he’s sinking because of his ideology where Palin in the same situation would rise based on hers. The difference is Obama’s trend to the tyranny of big goverenment over Palin’s message of freedom and individual responsibility.
There is no mistaking the choice most on this message board would take.
Thank-you Brent Weston.
I cringe every time I hear the ‘anointed one’ speak because he is always opening his yap to hurt or destroy my values. I can’t stand his arrogance – I wish, with all my Libertarian instincts, that our Prime Minister had this charming, sensible, intelligent lady to deal with – and the old soldier – who would have been ten times better as President with Vice President Palin to temper his Liebral tendencies – rather than that fanatical adolescent, his goofy VP and all his ‘pals’, the Red ‘Czars’.
Obama! Good Byeah! She will eat your lunch!
