  6. There’s a few things missing from Ron Bailey’s otherwise useful record of Strong. He doesn’t mention that Strong had just left Ontario Hydro, after being asked to take it over as Chair and CEO by Bob Rae in 1993. Strong naturally ruined the crown corp through utterly incompetent layoff packages in which Ontario Hydro lost much of its senior engineering and technical talent.
    What Ron also doesn’t mention is that Strong became a dollar-a-year man. This was not mere generosity. Strong was vigorously campaigning for Sec. Gen. of the UN in the early 1990s. He didn’t collect a salary, but he got to unload all of his UN campaigning expense costs on OH (lots and lots in foreign travel, naturally).
    Unpleasantly, the article is a bit dated, as it doesn’t mention Strong’s great adventures in the oil for food scandal.

    Frankly, I have wanted Canada to pull out of the U.N. for several years now. I don’t see why it has become the gold standard in so many peoples’ mind in terms of legitimizing any kind of trans-national activity. The U.N. is inept at best, corrupt at worst, at least when it comes to issues that matter.

  17. The US has mismanaged the US dollar for many years now and other countries are rightly worried that they will be paid back with money that preserves their purchassing power. The fact that the US dollar is the reserve currency in the first place came out of the crisis in the early 70’s where Nixon closed the gold window. Now we have another monetary crisis and it is only logical to think that the status quo will not be allowed to continue much longer. The problem is the fix could make things much worse. The only true solution is to tie the value of money to something tangible to prevent future monetary crises from happening in the first place.

  18. Zimbabwe needs some competition for the highest denomination bill at 250 million. Currently worth more as a collector’s item than as currency. If memory serves it’s worth about 20 bucks.

  19. Let’s all hope that the UN figures prominently in Count Igula’s upcoming campaign. If (when?) the US dollar tanks, because it is no longer used for settlement of oil transactions, we Canadians will be heating our homes with dried bovine dung, and living off a diet of Beaufort fishery products, brought in by dogsled every day. The Toronto Star, CBC, and CTV will make sure Canadians are fully informed about how the decline in Obama’s currency is going to affect our lifestyle here in Canada. As a matter of conditioning and preparing for this glorious new future, I am going without any Californian fruits or vegetables for the entire day. But I am left to wonder how those Torontonians are going to keep their sanity, and their preventative health diets (so they don’t have to face the public health system) intact when their beloved Caesar salads cannot be had for less than twenty-five loonies.

  21. I wouldn’t blame anybody for ditching the dollar right now. Not a soul. Even the Chinese who stupidly accumulated vast numbers of them based on some kind of magical thinking about infinity and American growth prospects.

  22. One of the pillars of individual freedom is that power and authority be pushed down to the lowest level that is workable. Nations shouldn’t do what provinces can reasonably take on. Provinces shouldn’t do what cities or towns can handle. And so on.
    The reason is that should a government entity become poorly run or despotic, people can vote with their feet. It’s easy to flee a city (one might not even have to give up one’s job), not difficult to flee a province, but very difficult to move to another country. And of course it’s impossible to escape the world.
    Socialists invariably want to do the opposite. They want to consolidate power at as high of a level as possible. Indeed nothing excites socialists more than the idea of a world government.
    In my view this greatly increases the risk of totalitarianism and intractable incompetence. It makes escape for the individual impossible, which in my more paranoid moments I suspect is the real purpose of global governance.

Maurice Strong has now joined Brian Mulroney and Paul Desmarais in investing in the Asia Power Group’s $100 million venture capital in “small coal-fired power plants being built in the south of China”. They are also looking at “larger projects in northern China, as well as in Malaysia, the Philippines and India.” The Asian economies are expected to spend $1 trillion [US] on essential infrastructure, of which an estimated $400 billion [US] will be on power generation. Chinese and Asian labour costs are low – as low, in China, as $45 per month – and potential profits are enormous.
    The Nov/Dec. 1993 issue of Council on Foreign Relations’ publication FOREIGN RELATIONS contains an article, THE RISE OF CHINA, in which we are warned that China will begin to use more energy than the United States within a few decades, massively straining the world’s energy supplies. If you were a power company investment magnet where would you place your future fortunes? In a nation wracked with environmental paranoia or a developing, unregulated energy hungry industrial giant? China is gearing up to be the world’s dominant manufacturing power. Most of China’s energy comes from the burning
    of soft, high-sulphur, highly- polluting coal. In 1991 alone, 11 trillion cubic meters of waste gases and sixteen million tons of soot were emitted into the atmosphere over China – and it has only just begun its long process of increased energy generation! The sulphur in this coal causes acid rain. The burning of the coal releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, the most efficient “greenhouse gas” in the global warming process.
    There are indications that Strong , Desmarais and their cronies (under ghost corporate affiliates) are behind the current rash of buying of low grade coal mines in depressed nations to fuel these projects. But this is yet to be fully substantiated. Who would invest so massively in low grade coal when it was targeted as Kyoto taboo commodity?
    Maybe someone who knew in advance they would be able to burn it with out regulation in China? Green house fears bottomed out the price of these coal purchases. If it can be used for power generating fuel, you stand to have a very inexpensive fuel source. China continues to burn coal in it’s power production unregulated by Kyoto.
    Now the real hook. You remember Maurice Strong? Desmarais’ familiar and corporate confidante, ex Power boss, major investor in 3rd world coal fired energy enterprise? Well Maurice ended up appointed to the UN as head advisor to the UN Secretary-General on environmental affairs Is this irony? He was campaigned for that position by Canada’s PM’s and diplomats. As such, he called a little multi national conference called Kyoto! Maurice and his friend Jean Chretien wrote and signed an agreement which effectively will destroy their pal Desmarais’ chief energy competitor (Alberta Nat Gas) and gave Power Corp investment in China coal/energy an enormous competitive advantage.
    Anyone who thinks this as mere coincidence is unaware of the networking of international corporate elites. This revelation makes it clear the Kyoto earth summit was a vehicle used by corporate (Strong/Chretien) bag men to create a huge global shift in power generation profits. They were backed by one of the worlds most devious businessmen.
    Oh, and Paul Desmarais? In September, 1993, he joined the Tri-lateral Commission. He spearheaded the Tri-lat initiative of promoting a Kyoto-like conference over concerns for the planet from carbon emissions produced by the DEVELOPED NATIONS.
    And you thought it was all about saving the planet? For whom?

  34. Lately I have pondered who was the worst president of the last hundred years – Wilson was bad, as was lbj and Nixon certainly was flawed while jfk died before he could wreak even more international and domestic havoc.
    But despite getting a lot of credit for getting Americans into WW2 (in the Nick of time) FDRs legacy continues to do dama ge to the tune of trillions of dollars and millions of deaths. The welfare state was unbelievably bad but the UN – his and his wifes brainchild could actually destroy mankind if it keeps going on like it has lately.

  35. The Commonwealth countries and the US (less Obama) should abandon the UN and form a League of Free Nations or whatever and let this UN thing continue without us and see how long it lasts.
    Global warming/climate change or whatever they call it next week is nothing more than a reason for the UN to declare that the equivalent of the”League of Free Nations” defined above plus the EU distribute our wealth to the rest of the UN developing countries vast sums of our wealth to help them develop their economies’. Not once do they express concern about the devastating affect this would have on our own economies.
    They can all go to hell.
