The approval process for a new franchise has to go through the League Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, culminating in a final vote and official authorization by the WNBA and NBA Board of Governors. The guidelines used to vote on approval are almost all financial in nature. And, I can assure you that Travis has investors backing him up to overcome that obstacle. I think maybe Elon Musk is in the background on this one. Travis mentioned meeting Musk recently.
So, in order to shoot down this new franchise, they’d have to have another reason. And that can be very exposing. So, the WNBA is in a difficult spot.
The best part is that there is a special draft to put players into the new franchise where established teams can protect only a select number of players on their team. Only, Travis is going to bring an entire team with him, which is NOT excluded by the rules of the league. The WNBA is really putting themselves in a bind by not just disallowing men to play in their league.
And, as long as this charade plays out, Travis is going to be adding expenses…and if the WNBA turns him down with no documented reason based on the rules, or all of a sudden finds their sanity, Travis is going to have a lawsuit for misrepresentation.
