Mos Def is a good rapper but his music went downhill when he tried to spread his wings and move outside the genre, not everyone is Gnarls Barkley or Andre 3000. Apparently, it’s even worse for him when he steps out of his profession(entertainment) to try something else, like Jordan and baseball.
I didn’t get to watch the interview but I’ll pull a Corbert and comment anyway. Rappers use “punch lines” in their songs similar to “I don’t speak no Arabic” and it sounds intelligent; but like in all music, the artist can say anything and they’re not rebutted, it’s the truth for that song. Look at some of the nonsense spewed by John Lennon for example.
As far as rappers and those that listen to rap being idiots, I disagree, that’s nonsense. With respect to rappers, people should understand that blacks in the US are indoctrinated at a young age in their community. This is where most of the ludicrous opinions come from, not a lack of intelligence. With respect to rap listeners; so be it, that’s your opinion, but think on this: It’s been mentioned in this thread that the “loons are running the asylum”, and as you rockers get older you will be marginalized even more(socially, technologically and every other ology). In reality you sound like your parents who said Elvis made “devil music”; and, you b*tch and complain like an identifiable minority making an HRC complaint when you hear someone say something you don’t like.

I forced myself to watch this “debate”. The appalling ignorance, lack of education and inability to think on the part of Mos Def was eye popping to behold. Hitchens and Rushdie actually held back in piety for this poor excuse of a graduate of a public school education. Frankly I don’t care what his opinions are, but the sheer illiterate nature of Mos Def’s language and thought process is mind boggling. He is to be pitied – the really sad reality of this exchange was that Mos Def actually thinks he’s articulate. education. Old saying, beauty is skin deep but stupid goes right to the bone. I think that Mos Def’s is a living example of this adage.
