  1. No, the U.S. government can’t walk away from the U.S. car industry. If Detroit goes kaput, it would only encourage critics of greenesque regulation…
    – From the “We Need Our Whipped Dogs” file.

  2. Wasn’t Obama one of the guys supporting the workers striking against GM a year or two ago, trying to squeeze the last ounce of blood out of them?

  3. “Both companies insisted they would be able to repay the mountain of loans,”
If I had a dollar for every deadbeat that promised the loans officer he could repay the loan………….

  4. Isn’t it time for the Big 3 to declare bankruptcy and get a fresh start? Dump the horrible union anchors and adopt the Japanese ‘Made in the USA’ model. Get Ogabe’s nationalization crap off the table and tell him to get lost.

  5. In other news, the DOW is under 7000 today, and staying there.
Every time this idiot opens his gob the market loses another 200 points. Pretty soon stock will be so cheap, I’ll be able to buy GM myself.
Behold, the new Phantom X-Plus for 2009! You too can have 800 horsepower, 24 inches of four wheel independent suspension travel, traction control, five BIG miles per gallon AND a tail gunner position with twin .50 cals!*
    (*Not available in California.)

  6. Not stirred enough–They’re not obimbo’s dollars. The money belongs to the taxpayer. You know, the ones you despise so much.

  7. Don’t cha know? It’s only the CO2 from Alberta and Texas that’s bad for the environment. CO2 from Ontario and Michigan and the cars they manufacture should and will be exempt. sarc on
Did anyone else notice that the guy who campaigned on “bankrupting coal companies” now calls the US the “Saudi Arabia of coal”?
I see a pattern here. Invest money in failing companies whose product destroy the planet; then, invest money to save the planet. Support our allies in their struggle to defend themselves; then, send money to our allies enemies so they can wage war on our allies. Campaign on the need to eliminate the America’s dependence on “foreign oil”; then, prevent America from reducing its need for forign oil by continuing to prevent the off-shore drilling of domestic oil.

  8. I think the US should go 100% protectionist.
I think that there needs to be a law in the US and Canada such that if you are caught buying a gay mobile from Japan or China or some screwed up place like Germany – you should be shot.
It is the US (and Canada – even though the US is 10 times bigger) that built out the car industry worldwide and built these economies – Americans even taught them quality.
I don’t want to hear this anti union bullsh*t any more. About 15% of American workers are unionized (about 30% of Canadian workers are unionized) – private workers. (I think about 70% of Canadian Gov’t workers are unionized and about half that in the US.). I have a huge problem with gov’t union workers but I have no problem with private union workers.
For all the greed and problems in the US with banking and all that sort of gov’t illegal stuff – it is still free. For way too long the US (and Canada by default) have been way to gracious to foreign companies and allowing them to succeed in the US. I think I understand the original reasons for this but it doesn’t apply anymore.
I’ve been all over the world and I don’t see too many Germans buying non-German cars. I don’t see too many Japanese
buying non-Japanese cars. But I do see alot of Americans and Canadians buying their cars. They are no better than American (and Canadian) cars. They worked a big image thing and because we are so free we let them do it.
It is true that Americans off-shored everything do to pure greed and they were not properly held accountable but they NOW need to take care of themselves first.

  9. The only way this nonsense is really going to end, is a CEO with some principles putting it all on the line and sending the “Borg” a note consisting of the word Nuts in big letters and sticking to his/her guns no matter what, and in the way of inspiration the gesture may remind people they have a set. Instead of hearing “you can have any color you want as long as its black”, someday in the near future.
    Until then…. it’s all downhill.

‘Obama may throttle, not retool, family cars’
“Today only the smallest gasoline electric hybrids average in the 40s (mpg). Under California rules (of car smog), if the American family of five wants to take a vacation together, they better plan on taking 2 small cars.”
Now, would that be one for each foot of Arnie?
Or does he get to keep his fleet 5 or 6 Hummers?

  11. I don’t see too many Japanese
    buying non-Japanese cars

For the to actually happen the Japanese would actually have to OPEN their markets to foreign manufacturers!
What was that saying? What’s yours is mine and what’s mine is mine (ref: world market place).

  12. ‘ I don’t see too many Japanese
    buying non-Japanese cars ‘
Maybe if they’d put the steering wheel on the drivers side of the car for the Japanese. Wasn’t that a big issue…? Always heard, maybe they finally dealt with that – but i doubter souter. Remember we’re talking big union here and pathetic management. I was a summer student in GM, my father worked there too. Its sad that they both (big union here and pathetic management) let things slide like this. Greed and myopia.
