10. There isn’t any reliable talk about Harper removing the GG; that’s only a comment by Andrew Steele, who also suggests, as his favorite option, removing Harper.
    Steele actually declares that the Real Reason for the formation of the coalition is because they all dislike Harper. That has to be the most ingenuous, naive, dumb claim I’ve heard in a long time. The real reason is: Power. Steele actually thinks that if the CPC removes Harper, the coalition will fall on their knees before the new CPC leader and kiss his hands/ring in obeisance.
    Nonsense. The only reason for this putsch is power, a power to rule, rob the taxpayer and reward each other, that cannot be gained by a democratic election.
    Now, if Ignatieff really believes this is a crime against our democracy, then, why doesn’t he stand up and say something? So far, we have all the separatistes coming out of the closet, all the unionistes standing up to cheer as they see taxpayer money being showered on them, others drooling over fat Senate seats. But we see none of this Set showing the slightest interest in the electorate, in democracy, in Canada.
    Indeed, they deny the electorate, they deny democracy, they deny Canada.
    They have set it up so that this coalition cannot be ratified by the electorate. Indeed, the Bloc has signed that it will not approve a no-confidence vote for several years.
    They have further set up this coalition so that the Bloc, a party elected only by Quebecers, has full rights over allowing/denying any House Motion. Nothing gets through or fails without Bloc approval. But the Bloc is not open to the Canadian electorate. It’s only elected by residents of one province. This makes Canadians without representation in their parliament. This is a denial of democracy.
    No taxation without representation;this is a denial of our democratic right.
    They deny Canada; the power of this coalition government rests in Quebec, in one party, the Bloc. This party has no representatives from anywhere else in Canada. This is a denial of Canada.
    So, if Ignatieff has any brains and/or morality, then why doesn’t he speak up?

12. If there is any truth to this, Iggy would easily win the Liberal leadership if he put a halt to this coalition. Whether or not that would make him electable in the future, I have no clue. After all, he did come out in support of this.

15. By disassociating himself from the Treacly Triumvirate, Mr. Ignatieff has to choose between ‘Canada’ and ‘Power by Usurpation’. If he chooses the latter, he proves himself to be a Liberal in the classic mode – bereft of ethics or honour by complicity in the subjugation of parliamentary tradition such that Canada becomes a subsidiary of Quebec. If he chooses the former, and leaves the Separatist Coalition to sit as an ‘Independent Liberal’, he reclaims the centre-left position for himself and instantly becomes the only Liberal worth voting for. He also removes the chance to use the ‘out-of-country academic’ moniker against him.
    I’d be delighted to see some backbone displayed by my MP! Come on Michael – make history!

What is it with Canada today – Are we going into a state where elections will be held every few months to satisfy the egos of party leaders at a cost of 300 million. – Why should the taxpayer support the campaigns of parties who make a few PR organizations rich and then have to support those elected with high salaries and greedy pension plans. As a CANADIAN I object to supporting a party that’s only reason for being is to seperate from Canada. Layton and the PQ- Must we put up with these fools.

20. Judging by the tone of the comments over on Andrew Steele’s site, Scott Reid must be wearing out several keyboards posting his diatribes under various names. That is the only way that there can be so many supportive comments for the seperatist coalition when any other site/radio/etc comment from voting Canadians thinks this is disgusting.
    No-one can truthfully say Harper has lost the confidence of the House, as it has not been tested. An actual vote could reveal many “illnesses” or even a few people with integrity on the Liberal side (okay, back to my drink…)

    As for Harper dismissing the GG (I wouldn’t put it past him to try to do it), I think it would damage him and his party in terms of having “the people” on his side. Voters get uncomfortable with the idea of messing with the monarchy’s role.

    Harper has not lost the confidence of the House. In fact, the opposition parties helped pass the Throne Speech without a single revision so he has a mandate to undertake all of what was outlined which was what he campaigned on doing and what the Canadian people elected him to do.
    Threatening to vote non confidence is not the same as having actually done it. Remember it took about a year after AdScam for Martin to give the opposition the chance to vote non confidence and force an election.
    Gee – remember it was no ethics no principals Jack Layton who extracted a $4 billion bribe from Martin in a late night hotel room meeting to give the Liberals another year to hide their AdScam tracks?
    Jack Layton will go down in history as an unprincipaled ego maniac sleaze bag. Flying over my province and then insisting that he was going to shut the oilsands down???? WTF. People actually vote for this hustler who can be bought by anyone to do anything if the price is right.

32. Is the Price of Coalition an Independent Quebec?
    In their press release of 1 Dec 2008 (Open Letter to all Canadians) the three leaders of the Coalition stated their authority to replace the Government of Canada.  They asserted that this right to form a government rested on the fact that “A Majority of Canadians and Quebecers voted for our parties.”  This is an explicit recognition of Quebec as an independent Nation.  Quebecers, as recognized by this document, are not “Canadians” nor can they be included in the category “Canadians” much less “all Canadians”; they are a separate and independent people and must be referred to as such.
    This recognition of Quebecers as separate and different from Canadians is repeated in “A Policy Accord to Address the Present Economic Crisis” (1 Dec 2008).  Were the three leaders stated that it was “the role of government to act as partners with Canadians and Quebecers.”
    Duceppe, speaking on behalf of his “Nation”, stated that he had entered into the agreement “in the best interests of Quebec, of Quebecers during this time of economic difficulties.”  Any concern for the Nation of Canada was strikingly absent.  His claim to speak for Quebecers and not Canadians was explicit.
    Duceppe stated that he would only support the Coalition until 30 June 2010 (Policy Accord) because the various parties had not agreed on “concrete action to recognize the Quebec nation.” 
    The price of Bloc Quebecois’s support for the Coalition is clear, up front acknowledgement in official documents that Quebec is a separate and independent entity that can not be included in the category “Canadian.”  Continued support beyond 30 June 2010 will only take place if the Coalition takes “concrete action to recognize the Quebec nation.”  We can note that this is a full year prior to the end of the Liberal-NDP Coalition which does not end until 2011.
    Clearly, the price the Liberals and NDP are prepared to pay for Bloc support is not limited to money, policy or programs.  It would appear that the price they are willing to pay, and have agreed to, is Quebec independence.  Only the details of when and how seem to be left.

35. I am still of the opinion that there will be hand sitting, abstentions or voting in favor of the government on Monday. It has become crytal clear even to some liebrals that these “tree” fellows are not good for the country. As stated above Ignatieff could actually salvage some credibility for himself and the liberal party if he and his supporters cut all ties with this treacherous Seperatist coalition. Thought Dijon’s head was going to explode as he attempted to explain that HE was getting the seperatists to work toward a better Canada, while the seperatists were saying that Quebec would get an aditional 1.6 billion dollars from Ottawa and strenghthened moral authority for the independance of their fiefdom. Tomorrow will be better when Parriseau comes out in favor of his new best friends,Layton and Dijon, while in the background Lizzy May will be praising the “tree” for appointing her to senate and giving her the cabinet post for industry and or natural resources.

37. I think the best way out of this mess is a new election. If the Conservatives can’t win another 12 sseats after this display, then it is unlikely they will in the near future. It will be interesting to see what the SeparaLibDip Party decides to do about running candidates. Will they run a full slate or run as a coalition? That will be illuminating.

38. I would really like to know where they get the number 60% of Canadians did not vote for PMSH. I have run the numbers and they ‘coalition’ has only 21% if the Conservatives got 38%. Did not 41% of the people in Canada not vote. I have watched parliament question period and the CBC nutcases and they have always stated this number. Just wondering.

42. My neighbors across the street, a firefighter and a senior nurse, ardent Liberal supporters, just emailed me a link to the petition for an election. Even they are outraged, and they are GTA Liberals. Core GTA Liberal supporters know this is wrong for the country.
    You Liberal Party idiots… should be praying that there is enough of a rump within your party that will either abstain or vote confidence in the CPC government. When you lose support of folks like my neighbors, you are done like last week’s meatloaf.

44. They don’t like the PM because he is a strong leader. He also oozes self confidence and is calm which is really disarming to them. The MSM don’t like him either because they are afraid he’ll take their little entitlements away – and well he should. They were safe with the Libs and Dips.

    EXPLAIN to the public why it’s wrong to expect the taxpayers to fund party politicking. If the PC’s can raise cash from supporters than so can all other contenders!
    The Conservatives had a lot of support prior to the Troika’s going ballistic; it’s not the public that’s pissed with the Government…but this backsliding on budget proposals is losing them support FAST!! Nobody likes indecision. If it was the right thing to do before than it still is…or it was wrong before and Harper deserves to lose his position

46. maz2… I know what Manley is referring to. I almost fell out of my chair when I saw his picture on the group of supporters yesterday. Now this coalition is not just anti-democratic, but they are trying to take down decent Liberals with them. Manley is the closest thing to a statesman the Liberanos ever could muster with the possible exception of Irwin Cotter. Where is the member for Mount Royal these days? We need to hear his opinion about the Liberals joining forces with the most anti-semitic party in the Commons.

49. Although I wouldn’t normally watch any TV newscasts, I’ve been trying to follow the CBC and CTV coverage of the “constitutional crisis”.
    Mike Duffy: balanced, fair etc. almost like he wasn’t part of the MSM.
    Don Newman: astounding, I’m glad I watched so that I now know why conservatives are always sucking the political hind teat. If this guy is allowed to be so unabashedly partisan on the public nickel, and to be the main source of information for people like my dear old mother, there is little hope for any sensibility in Canadian politics.
