VANCOUVER — They own the commercial use of the words winter, gold and Vancouver and now Olympic organizers will have a piece of the national anthem.
The Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee says the slogan of the 2010 Games will be “With Glowing Hearts.”
It’s a line from O Canada, written over 100 years ago and still recited regularly by school children and sports fans across the country and now it will be the key phrase defining the 2010 Games.
“With Glowing Hearts is connected and familiar to all Canadians through our anthem ‘O Canada’ and it also embodies what it takes to be an Olympic or Paralympic athlete,” John Furlong, CEO of the local organizing committee, said in a statement.
“It embodies the emotions every athlete will feel – no matter where they are from of what flag they stand under – when they have the honour to represent their own country on the world’s grandest international stage in 2010.”
Organizers have applied to trademark the line, as well as a line from the French version of the anthem, “des plus brillants exploits.””

Texas Canuck: “does anyone know if this is the stuff the art’s funding is(was) going into?” — actually yes. In particular the attempt to establish some criteria reflecting public standards before allowing the tax credits for productions. Unfortunately, the “arts” community made a big stink about this, saying they would have difficulty securing bank funding if the government part of the finanicial equation was not guaranteed. There are a couple of problems with this thinking . . . one is that they are in effect saying that this is a government subsidy program that should have NO criteria for providing funding .. . anyone who produces a film is supposed to automatically get it. I have seen quite a few borderline pornographic programs on cable and when the credits run it’s government money that got them produced — things like “polyamorous” relationships and “bum sex”, thinly disguised as “documentaries” but clearly intended to titalate. The second concern is that there might possibly be a LOT of this type of thing now that the CRTC has allowed a porn network that will feature “Canadian” content . . . whatever that is supposed to mean in a porno context. I really don’t have a problem with porn, but I think it is a slap in the face to taxpayers if they are not given a choice about whether or not their tax dollars should go to this type of thing. I also happen to think that when it comes to porn there are PLEANTY of other sources for funding. The taxpayer should not be abused in this way.

I think that this tendency to talk a lot about “complications” and “nuances” is a deadly disease in intelligence professionals. It is usually a cover with which to hide the lack of commodities they were hired to provide: clear answers to tactical and strategic questions. We don’t need intelligence services in order to know that the world is complicated. Of course it is: but intelligence services are created to sift through those complications and give the president the tools with which to make decisions. This is something–and here Obama’s advisers are right–that the CIA has failed, more or less from its inception, to do. Reform is the right way to go. The only question is this: why would they think Obama is the guy to reform the intelligence community?
