  1. Gordon Campbell here in BC has decided not to recall the legislature for the fall, meaning our elected officials will not be in the legislature until February.
How do we stop this man from basically handing the NDP a win in the next provincial election?

    Authentic or Cynical?
Are Senator’s McCain and Palin just campaigning or do they really care?
    Once
    Twice
Notice the similarities between the events: semi-private, no newspaper cameras, spread by word of mouth (or blogs).
The cynic in me thinks its planned, as an effective way to show their human side, using the new-media to get these stories out to public but avoid the Barbra Walters types of the MSM. How much do you want to bet most families in America with special needs children gets an email with the above stories in them?
For comparison, I tried to find an equivalent story for Senator Obama but after many google searches of variation on “Obama” “Kiss” “Kissing” “Babies” “Special Needs” etc the best I could find was standard newspaper kissing babies in the crowds photo ops and a pitch from his web site.

This one made me laugh, just for the Swiftien snarkyness of it.

President Bush secretly approved orders in July that for the first time allow American Special Operations forces to carry out ground assaults inside Pakistan without the prior approval of the Pakistani government, according to senior American officials.
The classified orders signal a watershed for the Bush administration after nearly seven years of trying to work with Pakistan to combat the Taliban and Al Qaeda, and after months of high-level stalemate about how to challenge the militants’ increasingly secure base in Pakistan’s tribal areas…

  10. Infidel US Meat Packing Plant discovers Muslims aren’t employable unless you grant them every demand on bended knee:
“At least 100 Muslim Swift workers let go”
    (The Greeley Tribune)
About 15 Greeley police officers were called to the scene by a Swift security guard as part of the termination. The security guard told police one terminated Swift worker had tried to hit him.
No arrests were made. The worker was escorted off the premises and police remained on the scene for peace keeping purposes.
The workers appeared to be all African. The termination appears to be related to the walkout of Muslim employees on Friday. The workers left their jobs Friday night after they were told they would not be given a break to observe the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Swift issued a statement via e-mail Friday evening about the terminations. The statement said the workers were let go as a result of the Ramadan-related work stoppage last week.

  11. “Blocking “The Path to 9/11”
Frontpage Interview’s guest today is John Ziegler, a former talk show host who is the director of the new documentary Blocking ‘The Path to 9/11’. Visit the film’s web site at BlockingThePath.com.”
“FP: Let’s begin with The Path to 9/11. What was this documentary about and what happened when it came time for it to be shown?
Ziegler: “The Path to 9/11’ was by far the most ambitious of all the 9/11 related films. It was a five and a half hour, two-night mini-series that aired on ABC on the fifth anniversary of the attacks which depicted the real history that connects the first WTC attack in 1993 and 9/11.
Just days before it aired the film was severely edited by Disney after personal demands from Bill Clinton and members of his administration and several senators and congressmen. The film, which was intended to be rebroadcast every 9/11, has never been shown again and even the DVD has not been released.
FP: Your documentary revealed that there was an atmosphere and reality of a Gestapo-like purge in the Left’s attempt to block this film. Can you talk a bit about that?
Ziegler: One of the many great ironies of this saga is that the news media portrayed the controversy as evidence of a “right-wing conspiracy” taking over “The Path to 9/11.” The reality is that almost the entire management structure of the film was made up of people who were very far left and who were concerned only about the Bush administration objecting to the film. Instead, the Clintonites, the Democrats in congress, the left-wing blogs and the liberal mainstream news media all conspired to perpetrate a fraud on the American people, which resulted in the film being severely edited, censored and banned from public dissemination. Some of the tactics the Left used to destroy this film are beyond hypocritical; they were down-right scary.
FP: This censorship on the part of the Left clearly entailed Stalinist-like ingredients. How can this happen in a free country and where is the outcry against this totalitarianism in our country?
Ziegler: I wrote about this problem in my book The Death of Free Speech. The reason why the left can get away with censoring speech is that much the American public no longer values free speech and the news media is totally on their side and is more than willing to look the other way when it happens. Heck, even the Republican nominee for President does not appear to value free speech or the First Amendment.
FP: The Clintons themselves played a key role in this censorship effort, right?
Ziegler: We now know that Bill Clinton himself called Disney head Bob Iger and demanded that the film be edited or pulled entirely. Our documentary proves that this effort was far more extensive and corrupt than previously thought.
FP: What was/is Bill Clinton scared of in terms of the original version of the film? If Bush acted like this, calling people and threatening them to edit or pull a film, every major newspaper would carry a story on it. Why the silence in the media about Clinton’s behaviour?
Ziegler: The Clinton people were clearly afraid because millions of mainstream Americans would finally learn the real history of what led to 9/11 that the news media had largely ignored. The scenes in the film they got edited out should not even be remotely controversial, but because the left wing media had never really talked about this history and the Clinton people had done a decent job of keeping much (though not all) of it out of the 9/11 Commission Report, they were able to fool cowardly executives at Disney who had no idea what the facts were into thinking there were historical accuracy problems with the film. We prove that was false.”

  12. While gay men tend to vote Liberal and lesbians back the NDP, Canada’s homosexual population is united in its opposition to the Conservatives, according to a new report.
A study conducted by the Laurier Institute for the Study of Public Opinion and Policy (LISPOP) found just 7.3% of homosexual men and 10.4% of gay women supported the Conservatives in the 2006 election. By comparison, 40.7% of straight men and 32.4% of straight women voted for the Conservatives.
“Clearly, they are anti-Conservative,” said Barry Kay, a professor at Wilfrid Laurier University and LISPOP researcher. “The hostility there is dramatic…”

Of those surveyed, 1,484 identified themselves as gay, amounting to 6.2% of all men and 2.1% of women. The survey found those who identified themselves as gay were more likely to be students and under the age of 35 compared with the general population.

The report also reveals a gender divide between gay men and women. Forty per cent of men vote Liberal, compared with 25% of their straight counterparts. However, lesbians backed the NDP, with 41% voting for Mr. Layton’s party in contrast to 24.4% of heterosexual women. There were other differences as well. For example, while gay men are marginally less likely to support the Green party than heterosexuals, 10.7% of lesbians backed the Greens, compared with just 5.3% of straight women.

The report also found that nearly 40% of gay voters cited morality issues such as same-sex marriage as well as abortion as their top concern in the last election, compared with less than 10% of the straight population.

  13. Cal2,
As a “Newf” I thank you for your generalizations.
Just so you know, Danny is not a hero to all “newfs”, particularly those of us who have enough sense to make up his their own mind (and pay more then our share of taxes and EI premiums that we will never get back).
Most of us, supporters and non-supporters of him alike, are wondering if he has lost his marbles entirely over this but then realize that he always said he would only be in two terms and thus has nothing to lose by pissing off his base here.
Like Alberta, where I lived and paid taxes for 10 years between 97 and 07, there is no provincial conservative party, aside from name. Danny is died red and is no hero to me. But alas, he is better than the alternatives here when the provincial writ is dropped.
Please don’t tar us all with the same brush because Williams has a personal vendetta with Harper. In my time in Alberta I met more than my share of layabouts as well. By no means does NL have that cornered.
Every time Williams opens his mouth on this it gets worse for him locally. If anything, I expect he is having the opposite effect that he supposedly intended.
Now, for full disclosure, I work for a Calgary based company from my home in NL.

  14. (Via CSP) Victor Davis Hanson, The Other 9/11 Story
Seven years ago we suffered the worst attack on the American homeland in our history. The material damage proved far greater than the 1814 British burning of Washington, the human losses more grievous than the almost 2,400 Americans lost at Pearl Harbor.
Years later, we tend to forget all the dimensions of that sinister homicidal bombing of our institutions. Radical Islam brazenly signaled that it need not have missiles or sophisticated bombers to burn 16 acres in the heart of Manhattan and set the Pentagon afire. Instead, it could turn from the inside out our own technology against us, in a manner that we were scarcely aware of — and in an iconic fashion at the heart of our greatest cities, ensuring collective psychological trauma that trumped even the terrible loss in blood and treasure…

  15. A lethal article; lethal to Dion, by Don Martin.
Article ends with this:- “Someone should let Mr. Dion know that some polls have him a distant second place to the Conservatives and flirting dangerously close to New Democrat Jack Layton for the right to be runner-up. The Liberal right-to-life campaign to make this election relevant had better start soon.”
A good read. Steff is toast.

  16. “STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER OF CANADA
    September 11, 2008
    Ottawa, Ontario
Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued the following statement today to mark the seventh anniversary of 9/11:
“The tragic events on September 11, 2001 brought home the very real and destructive consequences of terrorism. We take this day to remember the lives lost in this terrible tragedy, including the 24 Canadians who were killed on that day.
We also take this day to celebrate the power of the human spirit and recognize the strength of those who have survived. We also recognize the heroic efforts of police, paramedics, and emergency personnel who responded to the call and helped those in need.
September 11, 2001 is a reminder that the threat of terrorism – to our values, our institutions, our lives – is very real. The Government of Canada remains vigilant to this threat and will continue to take action to ensure the security of Canada and the safety of all Canadians.””

  17. What would Mark Steyn say about this? “BS,” probably.
Justin Vaisse, Muslims in Europe: A short Introduction
Myth #4: Muslims are demographically gaining on the “native” population.
The implicit assumption behind this very widespread myth is that Muslims form a distinct demographic bloc defined by religion, a bloc which will never blend into the rest of society (another possible assumption is based on ethnicity, “Muslims” being surrogate for “people of color” vs. white people). This assumption is contradicted by the significant rates of intermarriage and conversions (in both directions) and, more importantly, by the reality of integration in many countries, where Muslims are simply patriotic, law-abiding citizens – in this case, worries about demography have no basis, why would one count them apart? But even accepting the assumption they are a demographic bloc, “Muslims” are not actually significantly gaining on “natives.” True, European birthrates are generally low, and birthrates among immigrant groups are often high. But in the latter group, they actually fall rapidly after their arrival and among subsequent generations, as they tend to conform to the national norm. And in some countries like France or Ireland, general fertility rates are comparable to that observed in the US, around 2 children per woman. Last but not least, immigration to the EU is more and more tightly controlled. It is doubtful that from about 15-17 million in the 500 million EU-27 today (3 to 4 %), potential Muslims could number more than 6 % in the coming decades.

  18. Canadian Sentinel: Sudden Jihad On A Subway With A Hammer: Caught On Video Yelling “Allah” While Clobbering Victim
Two things I noticed from this video:
    1) not one person lifted a finger to help the victim; in fact, everyone you could see on the video took off, even when the guy being hammered was being dragged off the subway.
    2) either the man sitting next to the assailant’s son was an accomplice or the hammer-weilding crazy left his young child on the subway after dragging his victim onto the subway platform.
I’m tempted to ask, What the heck is going on with the CBC, except that it’s just the same-old, same-old. For whatever reason, I’m watching the Mother Corpse and for the past 25 minutes, it’s been one continual free advert-cum news item for, first, Elizabeth May and, second, for Jack Layton.
Stephen Harper’s on now, but the difference is, unlike the other two who were totally free to give their pitches, unquestioned, PMSH is being grilled by reporters. No “free” advertising here.

  19. So now Hansen is testifying in support of eco-hoodlums. What a high point in his distinguished career. /sarc
    Melanie Phillips, Greenwashing A Jury
Britain’s astounding retreat from reason is now legitimising anarchy. A jury has solemnly decided that it is ok to break the law and cause more than £35,000 criminal damage to a coal-fired power station because of the threat of man-made global warming… Apparently they reached this decision having sat through a propaganda barrage by militant mmgw fanatics, including the pioneer evangelist James Hansen and the activist (and Tory party green guru) Zac Goldsmith. The story does not record whether the jury also heard the opposite case; if it was subjected only to mmgw indoctrination, then this was truly a mind-bending trial.

  20. Karl Rove, Obama Can’t Win Against Palin
Of all the advantages Gov. Sarah Palin has brought to the GOP ticket, the most important may be that she has gotten into Barack Obama’s head. How else to explain Sen. Obama’s decision to go one-on-one against “Sarah Barracuda,” captain of the Wasilla High state basketball champs?
It’s a matchup he’ll lose. If Mr. Obama wants to win, he needs to remember he’s running against John McCain for president, not Mrs. Palin for vice president…

  21. Teaching the double dip
Retirees can add $41,000 to their pension for 95 days of supply teaching. Is that right?
….So it was something of a bombshell at a Toronto District School Board committee meeting last week that the TDSB could be overspending by $36 million a year on supply teachers that are retired, enjoying their teacher pensions, yet are “double-dipping” by heading back to the classroom post-retirement at twice or more the rate it costs to hire a newly-graduated supply teacher…..

  22. (Via Comment Central) Peter Bergen, A Man, A Plan, Afghanistan
The deteriorating situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan has grabbed the attention of American politicians across the spectrum. John McCain and Barack Obama have both recently called for thousands more American soldiers to go to Afghanistan. But simply throwing more soldiers at the problem will do little if the next White House doesn’t pursue the kind of strategic reset that helped the U.S. military to dampen down the violence in Iraq.
    The solution is twofold…

  23. “It” is over. It’s his fault.

“Most Members of Iraq Coalition Preparing to Pull Up Stakes
The Coalition of the Willing appears to be going out of business.
President Bush tucked a little extra news yesterday into a speech largely devoted to informing the public that he plans to withdraw 8,000 more troops from Iraq: He also announced that most of the countries that have been partnering with the United States in Iraq over the past five years will be pulling their troops out as well.
“Australia has withdrawn its battle group, the Polish contingent is set to redeploy shortly, and many more coalition nations will be able to conclude their deployments to Iraq this year — thanks to the skill of their troops and the success of their missions,” Bush said in a speech to the National Defense University.”

  24. I missed this at the time, but it seems particularly appropriate for the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks:
(Via Spengler’s Forum) Sam Ser, Muslim Mindset: ‘The hatred is in Muhammad himself’
To Westerners and moderate Muslims shocked by the radical form of Islam now topping nightly newscasts, the efforts of liberal-minded Muslims like Tawfik Hamid, Italian Sheikh Abdul Hadi Palazzi and a handful of others may seem like the perfect solution. Not so for Ali Sina, who has a different suggestion: destroy Islam.
Sina, who runs Faith Freedom International – an Internet forum dedicated to debunking Islam – calls himself “probably the biggest anti-Islam person alive.” The publication of his latest book, Understanding Muhammad: A Psychobiography of Allah’s Prophet, will likely cement that position. In it, Sina suggests that Islam’s central figure suffered from a series of mental disorders, including narcissistic personality disorder, temporal lobe epilepsy and obsessive compulsive disorder.
“These disorders,” he says via telephone, “can explain the phenomenon known as Islam… which is nothing but one man’s insanity.”

  25. JM, here is more from the Catholic and French elementary teacher’s settlement. Remember it is all about the children.
    * a 3% wage increase each year over 4 years
    * an additional 40 minutes of prep time per week by 2012
    * 2 non-teaching days to write report cards and assess students by 2012
    * supervision time, hall, bus etc. will decrease from 100 minutes a week to 80
    * more teachers hired to bring class sizes down from 25 to 24.5
By the end of the 4 year agreement the maximum teacher’s salary will be an astounding $94,612 from the current $83,476 with the average going from $71,020 to $83,795. All this in the face of declining enrolment and a poorer quality student. Wonder why teacher’s unions support the NDP and Liberals, couldn’t be to keep the graveytrain running could it?
This is just part of the continual public union enrichment as the private sector that produces the wealth is hammered by the economic downturn. Remember the union rule: always demand more for less work.

  26. “Canadians Are Stupid”
    Elizabeth May
    Here the clip @ Bourque
Oh iam so glad she is in the Debate Now.

  27. Garth Turner about his “friend” Elizabeth May as posted on Sept. 1st:
Campaigning in Guelph on Monday, Green leader Elizabeth May said now that she has an MP – for the next 40 days anyway – she expects to be in the televised leaders’ debate, or else. She’s gonna sue. Tough words. They didn’t even come with a trademark hug.
Now, I’ve said often that I like this woman. I’ve even said she belongs in Parliament. If we can have thirty or forty Quebec separatists sitting there, then why the hell not have a few MPs who are passionate about the planet? That, I am sure, was a part of Stephane Dion’s thinking when he agreed to withdraw the Lib candidate in the Nova Scotia riding May is contesting.
But there’s more. And my comments come from an understanding of May and the Greens gleaned during an intensive few months when she courted me with vigour – trying to turn me green after Stephen Harper discovered I was over the top.
Elizabeth is obsessed with these debates. She stated clearly during our long talks 18 months ago that “standing with the suits” is her only real goal in this political game. She knows she will not win a seat. She’s realistic about her party, too. It could double its popular vote, from 6% to 12%, and still not elect an MP, since it has no workers, no organization, no discipline and no way to concentrate votes within a few ridings.
The Green Party, actually, is not really a party, but more of a movement. Elizabeth is a spokesperson, not a leader with the power to make things happen. Instead, an unwieldy and decidedly unpolitical council makes operational decisions, the entire organization is desperately short of cash and, while I viewed it, atrociously run.
This is not to be critical of her or the Greens, but to make a point. Right now, the party is Elizabeth. It is a none-of-the-above alternative for a whack of voters who don’t like the Harper Cons and don’t want the Libs out of the penalty box yet. The probability is, after October 14th, there will be no Green MPs – or certainly not enough to gain official party status or run the country. But if the May forces manage to score 12% of the vote, that’ll come right off support for other parties and could seriously affect the overall outcome.
So, should she be in the debate? Her argument is since the Greens now have an MP (Blair Wilson, from BC, who ran afoul of Elections Canada and was punted by Dion), and will run candidates nationally, she has to be included. The official Dion position is yes. The official Harper position is no. The final decision will be that of the consortium of broadcasters who put on the gig.
But this final thought: If Elizabeth gets to debate, it will be for the benefit of Elizabeth. If, along the way, she picks up more votes for the riskless Green option, it could be at the expense of the Libs. And wouldn’t it be ironic if those people voting Green to send a signal about the environment end up re-electing the man who couldn’t care less?
Back in 1993, I sought re-election as a Progressive Conservative, and faced a swarming Reform Party who thought the PCs weren’t right wing enough. So, they managed to split the vote, and a Liberal replaced me – for the next 13 years.
posted by Garth Turner on 09.01.08 @
Yup – Garth is worried Lizzie May will split his vote.

  28. A Canadian doctor laments that Palin’s decision not to abort Trig has created “an implication for abortion issues in Canada” in Canada:
But a senior Canadian doctor is now expressing concerns that such a prominent public role model as the governor of Alaska and potential vice president of the United States completing a Down syndrome pregnancy may prompt other women to make the same decision against abortion because of that genetic abnormality. And thereby reduce the number of abortions.
Dr. Andre Lalonde, executive vice president of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in Ottawa, worries that Palin’s now renowned decision may cause abortions in Canada to decline as other women there and elsewhere opt to follow suit.

  29. With the Liberals looking so pathetic, I’m predicting the wildest, nastiest, most unbelievable election in our history.
The Liberals will be lower than low. It defies description. Out of power for a decade? Trudeaumania deferred? A Momma bear missing her kiddies would be more sensible.
The media will prove beyond a shadow of a doubt to be the most biased, incompetent, in the tank for the Liberals bunch in history. that’s really saying something.
It’s going to be legendary. And nausea inducing.
    Squeal, baby, squeal.

  30. Whining Danny Boy Williams, the fool, is now the darling of the CBC. They gave him more time than the Prime Minister yesterday and it was because he was slagging Harper and calling him a fraud etc.
No surprise of course, that’s the CBC, that’s what they do, give voice to anyone who slags the Conservatives.
BTW, has anyone from that CBC cesspool called Heather Mallick on her malicious, vicious, filthy rant about Governor Palin who she knows squat about?

  31. So has anybody heard anything on the big “O” going for lunch and kissing Pope Billy the 1st’s ass yet?

  32. Some interesting events per CTV.
    1) Christian Heritage Party wants in the debates now.
    2) Happening now, Robert Fife is in complete hissy-fit mode, which is being broadcast live, regarding the response to questions pertaining to the suspension of a CPC spokesman who commented on a story related to comments by the father of a fallen soldier.
Fife quotes:-” we have a job to do” and “they are using the RCMP against us”.
It seems that a statement issued regarding the suspension is not enough for him….he is in full ‘demand a statement from the PM ‘ mode.

All that glisters is not gold. In some cases it is depleted uranium.
Three Chinese men found this out when they came across a lump of shiny metal in a scrapyard in Bishkek, in neighbouring Kyrgyzstan, last year. Attracted by its shiny surface and its “gold sparkle”, they haggled the dealer down to a price of $2,000 (£1,135) for what both sides regarded as a treasure but neither could identify…

  35. (Via SWJ) Daniel L. Shapiro, Modern tribes — the new lines of loyalty
We need to first understand the nature of contemporary conflict. For years, the nation-state held primary responsibility for defining political, social, and cultural identity. It gave all of us meaning, and helped us feel safe and connected to something bigger than ourselves. But with the end of the Cold War and the rise of global interdependence, the power of the nation-state declined. And all of us now must define who we are in this fast-paced, interconnected world.
In this complex situation, the key is to recognize that the fault lines of modern conflict revolve around tribes. But not traditional notions of tribes. The modern tribe is an identity-based group held together by a sense of kinship. As such, we all belong to multiple tribes based upon our religion, ethnicity, political stance, nationality, and other dividers…

  36. Make no mistake, Sparrow said a rotten thing about (no I’m not being sarcastic). BZ to Mr Davis, the victim in question (from Rich’s link):
“In an interview from Bridgewater, N.S., Mr. Davis said Sparrow had called to apologize for the e-mail.
‘I told him I understand how, in the heat of an election campaign, we all get overzealous,” Mr. Davis said. “And he told me he was going to resign and that upset me so I pleaded with him not to, and (to) sleep on it. The last thing I want is for my son’s death to cause hardship for anyone else.’
Very gracious indeed. That was my impression of whay he was not fired, only suspended.
Still Mr Dion mismanages the issue (from the same article):
“Playing politics with a father who is suffering from such a tragic loss is simply unacceptable,” said Mr. Dion, adding Sparrow’s removal needs to be made permanent.
“Suspending, and not firing Mr. Sparrow outright, is a sad attempt to brush this under the rug.”
Bad optics Mr Dion, he make a contextually insensitive remark about an insensitive remark.
Having said that, Mr Harper must see to it that this “War Room” is snapped back a few notches. The generals seem quite young here, and maybe that’s the problem.
Instructions should be simple, stick to policy, if you haven’t already been told, or else. Bob Fife is right that this sort of things plays right into Grit hands. Two gaffes in one week; well at least the way things are going, they won’t have to worry about peaking too soon.
They won’t have to think about a majority either.

The ice level in the 1920’s, 30’s and early 40’s was at a similar low level. The St. Roch went easily through the Northern route of the NW passage which is closed this year and that was in 1944. The HBC had many other boats freely navigating the southern route of the NW Passage.
Gjoa Haven(1930) and Cambridge Bay(1929) pictures showing low ice level. A lot more info in that link.

This little boat the Aklavik also made it through the NW Passage in 1937.

Nascopie and Aklavik meet from East and West in 1937
The Nascopie commonly travelled through the passage in the 30’s.

This evidence is ignored by science, and it shows the conditions in the Arctic in the thirties were similar to today. And then in the late 40’s the Arctic froze up and the HBC shut some of their posts due to the increased ice.
What is called science has become an embarassment.

  39. Justin Shubow, Remembering the Concentration Camp Composers
An article in yesterday’s Le Monde (in French, hélas) recounts the mission of Francesco Lotoro, an Italian Jewish pianist and conductor who for over 17 years has been searching for and organizing all of the music written in internment and concentration camps between 1933 and 1945… Considering himself a “smuggler” who is passing this music to the world outside the camps, so far he has collected 4,000 pieces, including everything from cabaret to operetta to sacred music…

  40. One for : Not Waiting for the Asteroid?”
New Jersey’s Star-Ledger today put out an entire edition without anything from the Associated Press within. The sharp-eyed reader will notice lots of local news by staff plus articles from other papers–Washington Post, LA Times, McClatchy, the Glouceseter County Times–and content from online services such as Sportsticker.
It’s one more nail in the heart of the AP as other papers cancel their contracts and more threaten to.”
