  1. Ok, so they let things blow up all over the place, and there’s still big f-ing chunks of concrete falling off the Gardiner Expressway, but say what you want about the Toronto City Council they get the IMPORTANT things right.

  3. And yet the city lacks money, or apparently does, to keep pools or hockey arenas open….
The point isnt whether or not the arenas should be open longer, just that the City is screwed up in its spending priorities. I am a firm believer that there is always enough money to do the things that are worthwhile, especially if you stop spending money on the things that aren’t….
It isnt just the amount of money, which I am sure is small enough. Of course this raises the question as to why it isnt a freaking private charity, but thats another question. It is more the fact that there are managers who have to worry about this, a line item in a budget, council time spent approving the budget.
Less TIME spent on this crap and more TIME spent on real problems, like say rationalizing zoning by-laws for propane facilities, would be a better thing to do. Its all about priorities and they are revealed by actions and non actions not the finger pointing words that come from the measured tones of his Blondeness the mayor.
Now if only the right/conservatives could put forward someone reasonable in the next municipal election…..sadly the only people who want to run for Mayor of Toronto alwasy seem to have dreams of Nation Building, rather than worrying about garbage collection, policing and fixing potholes…you know the things that every other mayor in the world worries about.

  4. QUOTE:
Miller’s priority is distributing crack kits to ‘special’ neighbourhoods and demonizing law abiding gun owners.

Toronto’s citizens, many of them anyway, are aware of this retardedness. Let’s not turn this into another Toronto bashing session – let’s bash the moron politicians, and idiot do-gooder morons who think they are helping crackheads by giving them supplies.
Let’s remember that it is not Toronto that has a safe injection site for its heroin addicts, nor Toronto where a bunch of gangmembers encircled two cops and got shot for their trouble.

  5. What more proof do people need that when given the opportunity to get its priorities straight Toronto NEVER does?

  6. I wonder if this was delivered by Canada Post? I suspect it was stuffed into the mailbox by some local organization.
What part of the city does this person live in anyway? I doubt these got delivered to any affluent neighbourhoods.

  7. Neo,
“c’mon, now… how do you think you get the money
    to buy your rock?”
Absolutely classic line. I’m still laughing.

  8. I heard the CBC Noon Propaganda Show (I listen to CBC 2—for now), where some anti-poverty asshat was going on and on about how poverty causes crime and that this factor has to be taken into consideration re the riots, etc., ad nauseum . . . as if the bite’s less harmful and should, for sure, be mitigated.
I’d say forget the poverty bit–I’d wager that most people living in poverty are decent, law abiding citizens. The real reason for a critical mass of dysfunctional behaviour, as Stephen points out, is choices. E.g., Data show that intact families below the poverty line, in general, produce quite stable homes for their children, who are then less likely to be involved with crime. (So, instead of focusing on poverty, let’s focus on the family.)
Making excuses and enabling illegal, unhealthy practices is make-work for the government bureaucrats and their hangers-on (mainly Liberals, left over from too many years of Liberal hegemony): the more crackheads and rioters there are, the more government programs and employees needed to “fix” them. But, of course, because the problem is misdiagnosed, the “solution” never works and the cycle continues, with the selfish, self-serving L(l)iberals having more jobs to themselves, at our expense, while also substantially contributing to the ruin of the unfortunate drug addicts and hoodlums—and many others.
What a shame. And, what a bloody scam.

  9. If it was ever decided to give the Earth an enema, I know just where the injection site would be.

  10. Lookout–couldn’t agree more: From my book Don’t Die With Your Helmet On–
Now, you may have heard the “root cause” theory of criminal behaviour: in a nutshell, subscribers to this notion claim criminal behaviour is a product of poverty and lack of education, rather than simply individual disposition. In essence, bank robbers don’t steal money because it beats
working for it, but because their child¬hoods were unhappy. With enough therapy, supposedly, they will be able to come to grips with the true cause of their socially unacceptable behaviours and, as a result, cast them aside and engage in more salubrious pursuits.
This theory has gained great currency over the past twenty-five years or so. And although there may be some truth to it, it doesn’t hold up in my experience. For, you see, all the criminals of my acquaintance— unlike many non-criminals—are from solid middle or upper-class backgrounds and often are university or college graduates. In fact, most of them have either law or business degrees!
In contrast, and surprisingly—if you’re a root-cause advocate— my non-criminal friends, even though they grew up in limited circumstances, have managed to overcome whatever early handicaps they may have had and went on to become productive members of our society. Along the way, many of them managed to amass some serious assets. So, forgive me if I question the “root cause” theory.

  11. I remind everyone that Toronto councillors Halliday and Ford were investigated by their colleagues for their thrifty spending habits.
    Toronto: World-class city, world-class crack!

I have to disagree with you. We are all responsible for the politicians we have, and we elect (Torontards included). Bashing Tee Dot is as easy as getting welfare in Saskatchewan so lets not. Regardless of location BC,ABorONT our apathy toward public affairs is directly responsible for who we elect, and their priorities. This is why all political parties can hold hands and impose a Carbon tax. They know it’s a scam, we know it’s a scam, but they know that united there will be no opposition to the scam. We are aPATHETIC and in the end will just throw our hands in the air; then, we will sooth ourselves by saying “Canada is the best place in the world”.
Don’t blame politicians, we all must look in the mirror and take responsibility. We take responsibility by actually doing something about our own behaviors, just b*#tching about things makes us the same as those we all loathe.

  14. Now it is,
    “safer crack use kits”
and a few years from now it will be,
    “safer rioting and looting kits”

  15. when will we provide the rioters with helmets, vests and gas masks anyway. the poor dears could get hurt expressing their feelings and miss getting in the food bank lineup.

  16. We are all responsible for the politicians we have, and we elect
I have heard that argument a million times and have disagreed with it for as long as I can remember for two simple reasons,
1- Most politicians are not people we would buy a used car from, but we have to vote, we have to choose one so we try to choose the “lesser evil”.
2- Politicians promise us things to get elected and then do the opposite because once elected they are pretty much unacountable.
Once the politician I voted for reverses his position, how am I reponsible for that?
We do not have crystal balls, we do not know what politicians will do 2 years or 6 years from now, we are not responsible for them betraying us.

  17. This is an automatic reply to your message. We do not accept hate-mail. Please direct your hateful energy elsewhere.
We here in the USA use that “hate energy” to win medals at the Olympics, eh! Sorry Kate, had to do it…

My voice is one of several million. I do what I can. I educate when I can. I harass my family and some (those I can trust) friends about our terrible politicians. My financial support, and not 10$ either, has also been provided to the CPC and various blogs (including this one and Ezra)
So I am not just sitting here bitching.
However, in Toronto, and in any big city, there are many voices of special interest groups who are able to shout out their agenda and usually receive some pandering.
The leftard politics of Toronto are no worse than those of any big city in Canada, and because it’s the biggest, it’s also the most obviously affected. Name me a city where this isn’t an issue. If you name Mississauga, by the way, run by good ol’ Hurricane Hazel, I will ask you to go there, and see if it looks like a nice place to live (hint, there are a lot more mosques in Mississauga than in Toronto, for the population), and other civic issues as well.
Meh, bashing Toronto is a national past-time. It used to be the Leafs everyone hated, and that’s just fine by me – I don’t give a crap about hockey. But frankly, I live here and I am raising my kids here, and at least where I live the quality of life is pretty good. I have never been mugged, had my house broken into, been carjacked, even heard a gunshot, or been verbally or physically threatened by any member of any visible or non-visible minority group. The worst thing that’s happened to me in 30+ years of living here is someone scratched up my car because they didn’t like my parking job, and frankly it was a lousy parking job.
And unless you believe that the national crime registry is part of a lefto conspiracy, the murder rate here is significantly better than in any of the big cities out West (if I recall correctly Saskatoon or Winnipeg or Calgary are routinely the worst in Canada for this).
So, let’s divert our so called “hateful energy” to the appropriate targets. Pandering politicians, deluded do-gooders, and liberal fascists and social engineers who think that a 3 year college or university degree has prepared them to make decisions that will affect the lives of thousands or millions of others. Not individual citizens trying to get on with their lives.

  19. According to Street Health’s website, streethealth.ca, it is a non-profit organization whose funding is primarily (66%) but not entirely from provincial, municipal, and federal coffers (our tax dollars). The annual report shows a funding and expense pie chart for sources and uses but in a quick once over I did not see any $ amounts, only % numbers. This NPO does not appear to be part of Toronto Health, but is financed in part by the city. These kits look to be one of its many programs that are funded.

  20. “So, let’s divert our so called “hateful energy” to the appropriate targets.” lol
Lori, I wasn’t accusing you of just B**tching and doing nothing. I am of the opinion that most people who frequent this site are pulling more than their weight in many ways.
I understand your feelings Friend and Lori but I don’t feel so hopeless. If we can’t do anything without a crystal ball then why complain at all?
WRT east/west I did try to mention in my comment that it doesn’t matter where you live, our collective apathy is the real problem IMO. Even if we hang every politician of every political stripe, as long as we bend-over someone will fill the void.

Neo that has to be the funnyest whittyest comeback I’ve ever read on the net. Ta for a great laugh.
This program is the precurser for expanding the activist role in what is deemed a “Social Condition” instead of holding addicts accountable for their addictions the fruitloops are trying to force society to accept that addicts are victims of some mythical condition created by society. They are trying to normalize drug addiction as if it were a mental illness. It’s not, a person has free will, one decides to shoot junk up their arm a person doesn’t not have a choice when their brain is hardwired wrong. These crack gifts packages are step one in spreading the leftard propaganda in every single city in Canada to normalize addiction and step two will be forcing the taxpayer to fund an addicts’ addiction. Step three forcing society to provide housing for addicts. These addicts would steal the gold filling out of Grand Ma’s mouth if given a chance. They have only one desire to get high but common sense isn’t part of the mandate for these social advocates they are using unsound and unproven science to force society to adapt to an addicts’ addiction. AA and alanon have proven programs to aide the addict and their loved ones, and the first step to getting clean is addmitting you are an addict not being coddle and having the farking fruitloops on the left assuring you there’s nothing wrong with being an addict.
The leftarded advocates are hell bend on “Normalizing Addicts”, free needles and free crack gift bags is the first stage of their master plan. Like the hate and racism industry these wackjobs are creating a complete mythical psycological lie based on no science and we are being forced to pay for their “Social Experiment” they aren’t saving lives but I’m purdy damn sure their coddlidng is going to make life a living hell for the families of addicts. They want personal accountability to be negated and they want society to be responsible for the actions of the individual addicts.
They have a personal agenda, they get paid to be Social Activist and they want their little mythical utopian plan to spread like an STD across Canada. We need more addiction centers, we should not be enabling addicts.
I have a brother who is a crack addict, I have seen what it does to the addict and my family these fruitloops are the problem and they are most certainly not part of the solution.

that blowem up propane thing isn’t his blondness’ domain, it was the branch of the ontario gov’t that approved (and has the authority) in this type of designation of land use (and it probably got it’s clearance during Harris’ stint). That said, the fools at city hall don’t even know if there are other questionable land use (for dangerous substances) in other areas of the big smoke. Me thinks it’s about time Millet quit worrying about gorebullwarming and turning legal gun owners into criminals and starts doing the job he’s supposed to do!!!!

  23. Absolutely classic line. I’m still laughing.
Homer (satisfied): Well, there’s not a bear in sight. The Bear Patrol is sure doing its job.
Lisa (skeptical): That’s specious reasoning, Dad.
    Homer (pleased): Thank you, sweetie.
Lisa (baiting the hook): Dad, what if I were to tell you that this rock keeps away tigers.
Homer (inquisitive, oblivious): Uh-huh, and how does it work?
Lisa (incredulous): It doesn’t work. It’s just a stupid rock.
    Homer (contemplating): I see.
Lisa (reasoning): But you don’t see any tigers around, do you?
Homer: Lisa, I’d like to buy your rock.

  24. To Tom Olson. Re: Crooks are crooks because of poverty etc. You’re so right. There are basically two types of crooks. Those that get caught, and those that don’t. The differnece is called “luck.” Some people have a criminal disposition, others don’t.

  25. why don’t they just ban the unsafe crack kits? It worked for handguns, there hasn’t been a single gun murder on city property since they enacted it.

  26. (GYM wrote above: “that blowem up propane thing isn’t his blondness’ domain, it was the branch of the ontario gov’t that approved (and has the authority) in this type of designation of land use (and it probably got it’s clearance during Harris’ stint).”
    Nope.
I quoted from the G & M yesterday, “The TSSA [Technical Standards and Safety Authority], which reviews the proposed design and then inspects new propane facilities, received an application from Sunrise to build the Downsview plant in late 2005, said John Marshall, director of field operations for the safety regulator.”
Mike Harris was no longer Premier of Ontario in 2002.
Joan Tintor said someone would blame Mike Harris!)
