Inducing this hesitancy are intellectuals of the self-hating variety, who welcome the destruction of the national identity and who argue—in part, correctly—that every person’s identity is multiple; that identity can and ought to change over time; and that too strong an emphasis on national identity has in the past led to barbarism. By reiteration, they have insinuated a sense of guilt into everyone’s mind, so that even to doubt the wisdom or viability of a society consisting of myriad ethnic and religious groups with no mutual sympathy (and often with mutual antagonisms) is to suspect oneself of sliding toward extreme nationalism or fascism; so that even to doubt the wisdom or viability of a society in which everyone feels himself part of an oppressed minority puts one in the same category as Jean-Marie Le Pen, or worse.

When I ‘invade my neighbours’ it is usually to borrow a lawnmower or weedeater and I am fully ‘armed’ with beer.

Another in a succession of thoughtful essays by Theodore Dalrymple. Immigration clearly needs to be carefully managed, and the cultural relativism that sees no difference between the West and various totalitarian regimes needs to be seen for what it is: juvenile posturing.
Mike Larsen: Your vision is indeed rather disturbing, but I am cautiously hopeful that European resistance to a cultural takeover will stiffen. In my own country, the New York Times (of all newspapers) recently ran an article about a Belgian Muslim woman who, while operating a website supporting Al Qaeda, cynically accepts welfare payments and exploits Belgium’s legal scruples. I found it surprising that the Times would print this article at all. In general, I think I’ve detected a slight lessening of the MSM’s tolerance for Muslim aggressiveness and a greater willingness to call a spade a spade.

Britain is in a unique position. It doesn’t just have to kow tow to its own liberals, it also has to bow and scrape before the German and French Eurocrats in Brussels. There is a vast cultural gulf between the immigrants to Britain from a bygone era and the present. Europeans have always got on without majore incident – and continue to do so despite the usual carping about Polish workers.
Even the older generation of “Imperial” immigrants – Asians and Caribbean blacks – got on despite considerable prejudice against them because they understood, and subscribed to, the essential civic demands of being British.
Indeed, there is often quite an ironical clash of generations in the British Pakistani community. It is the older generation of immigrants who are usually most accommodating of wider British society and are completely baffled by their British-born grandsons’ militant Islamism.
Kursk, I think you are incorrect. The children and teens of today have already been completely brainwashed in surrender mentality, moral relativism, and have no sense of nationalism. The EU is coming fast and will crush all opposition. There is no one in Europe who can resist the EU, and they will ensure that there is no opposition to any social changes they dictate.

The only ones putting up resistance now are the older generation who remember Stalin, and Hitler, and of course the usual white supremacist thugs. The “cream” of today’s youth, the mainstream educated individuals, including our future leaders, have no sense of nationality, no knowledge of history, and will never be a part of any resistance.
I think the blood shed will be little indeed, and that the world is headed for a dystopian future that only some of the science fiction writers of the past 50 years have predicted.
My hope is that North America will see the unfolding disaster in Europe in time to make the changes to permit some survival of a Western Civilization here.

I am a afraid your right. You remember those Women who where shoot in Montreal? The men walked away, no one tried to even rush the Women hating monster. There is a professor from Germany who comes each year to Canada and he focuses on the demographics of what is happening in Europe. As he points out the rapid aging of their population with the concomitant muslim immigration and their huge families will spell the end of Europe as we know it. The young Europeans are emigrating to North America, Australia and New Zealand as they can see the writing on the wall.
As this trend continues he says there will be no Europeans to militarily challenge the muslim tide as the remnants will be too old. As he also pointed out these muslim immigrants are coming not to work but to take advantage of the socialism of Europe with its welfare. They are for the most part uneducated and have no interest in assimilating into western culture.
Remember as Hirsi Ali states and writes muslims hate our culture. They with their leftist allies like Bin Layton will end our civilization if we do nothing. Each day I see more and more headscarfs on my travels around Toronto.

I also agree with your assessment. We are like frogs sitting in warm water waiting patiently as it heats to a boil. Europe is the distinct barometer that we can judge our own public reactions, as we overlook the obvious debasement of our society and smile thinking that we are helping a world of “people just like us”.
This is a farce of course, and anyone who has legitimately traveled and spent time in the countries we are so keen to displace our populations with, knows what I’m saying.
We are viewed by the greater world of humanity as a weak and impotent race of undeserving pushovers. We are considered gullible, spiritually defunct and transparently shallow. The reality is this:
“The older generation” lived with faith in God. Most of the older generation grew up in families where family, faith, country were paramount. God and Church were not outdated concepts but daily realities, whose tenets people lived by: Love your neighbour as yourself (and between the lines: Know your enemy, know who s/he/it is, and do something about it).
The West reminds me of the U.S. under President Jack Nicholson in the film “Mars Attacks”: “The aliens/Muslims MUST/HAVE TO like us because WE want peace”–based on nothing, based on no tenets or principles but “give peace a chance.”
(Disclaimer: Plot revealed…) I LOVE the scene when the Martians arrive in Washington in their space ships: President Jack and Mrs. President, Annette Bening, show up on the tarmac, marching bands in attendance, an exultation of doves released, and POW: Doves are firebombed, marching band members are shot to death, little Pet President Pooch is kidnapped, and the Martians take over the White House.
Singularly lacking in most blog comments on this topic is the role that Christianity has played over the centuries in civilizing and demorcratizing the West–and what has happened as the West has bought the apostasy that “God is dead.” Most of the West’s privileged elites believe this and live accordingly: decadantly.
Which brings me to Knight 99’s point: What’s happened in England is that its “leaders,” many of them rich and privileged landed gentry and aristocracy–or rock stars–have foresaken all or most of their spiritual heritage and legacy. They live entitled, privileged lives completely bereft of any sense of either gratitude or “noblesse oblige.” In their thinking, sans God, they They “deserve” the decadant lifestyles they revel in, and “sod off” to everyone else.
This me-first attitude denudes so-called Western leaders of any leadership capabilities, let alone a sense of altruism–which is something Christianity has always instilled in believers.
Thus, in the West, we have all of the fruits of the Christian faith of our forebears–which include unprecedented freedoms, material well-being, and democracies the envy of the rest of the world–without any sense whatsover of gratitude, what can I do to share with others what I have?, or awe of the Numinous, the mystery of faith which fuelled, upheld, and strengthened society when faced with unspeakable evil and degridation.
We are spiritual waifs and orphans, totally disarmed for the fight ahead. Until we reclaim our spiritual heritage, our spiritual memory, we walk as sleep walkers, as sheep to the slaughter.
Bury your heads in the sand, if you like, put blinkers on, pretend that our Christian faith is dead and that it has never mattered–in fact, that it is the problem. Go ahead and do that, si vous voulez.
But be aware that the belief in this way of thinking is what is doing us in: witness Great Britain and formerly Chrisitan Europe.

Not accepting it, and saying that we don’t accept it, might mean that some people stop inviting us to their parties, it might mean that things get a little sticky at the water cooler, it might mean that people cross the street to avoid us, it might mean that our sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, cousins, mothers, fathers stop talking to us–or start telling everyone else that “________’s gone crazy”–but that shouldn’t stop us from speaking up and out.
The only way we accept it, is if we agree that our creature comforts and our popularity quotients are more important than the truth, are more important than our freedoms and those of our children and grandchildren.
Perhaps the only legacy we can leave our children and grandchildren, now, is that we didn’t accept the Islamofascist tyranny. We fought it.
The reason I say accept it is that no one, no Liberal, Conservative, or NDP’er (because of Political Correctise will stand up to it. That’s why I say accept it.
