“… than I can my white grandmother*.”
Speaking before an audience that included Marion Barry, Cornel West, Malik Zulu Shabazz of the New Black Panther Party and Nation of Islam official Jamil Muhammad, Wright praised Louis Farrakhan, defended the view that Zionism is racism, accused the United States of terrorism, repeated his view that the government created the AIDS virus to cause the genocide of racial minorities, stood by other past remarks (“God damn America”) and held himself out as a spokesman for the black church in America.
In front of 30 television cameras, Wright’s audience cheered him on as the minister mocked the media and, at one point, did a little victory dance on the podium. It seemed as if Wright, jokingly offering himself as Obama’s vice president, was actually trying to doom Obama; a member of the head table, American Urban Radio’s April Ryan, confirmed that Wright’s security was provided by bodyguards from Farrakhan’s Nation of Islam.
A roundup of reaction.

Even the MSM have – reluctantly – picked it up, although NBC chose an observer who dismissed it all as a “media circus.”
No, the reverend seems to have his own motives and there’s no question Obama is suffering from The Wright Stuff.
“Louis Farrakhan is not my enemy. He did not put me in chains, he did not put me in slavery and he didn’t make me this colour.”
Reverend Wrong has not been put in chains, neither was he a slave and what’s that? Is he complaining about his black/white colour mix?
Hey Trolling Frog:
If you would like to apologize for all the slaves you owned, go ahead. I didn’t own any.
Since Slavery has been illegal in the US for 150 years and longer in Canada, the rest of us have nothing to apologize for – you know, not owning any slaves and whatnot.
And good luck finding a freed slave. If you manage to find such a person, they’d be a bit long in the tooth by now.
Phillip G. Shaw:
So you want the black man in back of the BUS!
I think that was a Dixie-crat plank. Robert Bryd must love your logic.
Shove your racist accusations up your ass. I don’t like Obama because he’s a left wing radical, not because he’s black. I was just describing what I think the Dems are going to do for pragmatic reasons. I want McCain to win, so Obama as Pres nominee suits me just fine.
I’m a bit disappointed to see this line of commentary.
If the media in Canada had managed to dreg up someone in Harper’s past who held extreme socially conservative views on, say, gays or abortion, how would all of you feel about the media using this against Harper?
I know how I’d feel.
There is plenty of room to criticize Obama. I would have hoped we could leave the whole “guilt by association” line of attack to the Liberals, as it seems that’s the only way they know how to fight.
Particularlly when we (rightfully) slag Kinsella for doing the same thing (i.e. associating support for gutting HRCs with NeoNazis)
AQS…..
The sooner Quebec separates the better, YOU gave us Trudeau, You gave us Mulroney, You gave us Cretin, and now You are trying to give use Dion.. go steal More ROC money …. that is all you are good for
SYF:
Even to have a ‘black’ church seems contrary to scripture.
Not sure off-hand which passage this is, but it’s somewhere in the Bible.
“Whether Jew or Greek, man or woman, rich or poor … all are equal in the eyes of God.”
I believe you are thinking about Galatians 3:28 where the following statement referring to Christians is found:
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
Now about the idea of black churches. I have discussed with some of my black friends about this subject. They got started during the time of slavery. One man named Richard Allen is considered to be one of the founders of the AME denomination. Unfortunately, many AME (and other black) churches no longer follow the principles that Allen taught and it is not uncommon today for them to embrace something like Jeremiah Wright’s teachings. One of the reasons that Obama has not suffered as much as he should have from these revelations is that Wright’s teachings are simply too common in certain types of churches.
One more point on Wright’s thoughts on Farakhan. Although Wright’s statement is correct because it is so short, Farakhan’s ideas on the origins of Western slavery is quite in error. A more accurate history may be found starting on page 110 of this article
John G~ That would be guilt by 1040 Sunday’s sermons worth of association. And dinners at each other’s houses. And so on. And so forth.
otter, so what?
Again, Harper goes to church…if the priest at his church were to be on the record as making extremist statements about gay intolerance, are you suggesting that the media should be using that against Harper???

If my sister had a dick, she’s be my brother.
Cut out the hypotheticals and try addressing real issues.
OMMAG at 11:45 am: “Just ask your self this question… What is the reason for the existence of a group of “Black” churches?
The answers should provide all the understanding you need on the matter of Wright.”
And if anyone needs a little help while you are asking yourself OMMAG’s question, here it is:

Guilt by association? You obviously haven’t been paying attention. Obama has been going to Rev Wrong’s church for 20 years. The good Reverend was all over Obama’s web site until the video hit and then suddenly mention of him disappeared.
If Harper persisted in going to a racist church for that long a period, I’d reckon he was a racist as well. However, that’s not the case.
What else is one to surmise when Obama faithfully goes to this guys church every Sunday just to listen to racist, bigoted and hate conveniently wrapped up in a sermon for 20 years? He’s obviously a convert, now backpeddling. However, based on what he said prior to the Penn primary, the racism is a little deeper ingrained and hard to hide.
