  1. The UK is a lost cause. They’re barrel-rolling towards fascism so quickly, it’s unreal.
Thatcher should have pushed for a constitution while she had the chance.

  2. Sufferin’ succotash! What next? Sylvester the Cat being charged with inciting hatred against people with cleft palates?

  3. I hope they hang the racist little varmint!
The UK wasn’t successful outlawing Winnie the Pooh to date (you know piglet) but we’ll need to keep a close eye on things. Where’s Kinsilla when you need him?

  4. I can see why Basil’s friend Mr Stephen would need to fall under a gipsy spell to make him attractive to women.
Although, probably just losing the Mark Holland hairdo would be a good start.

  5. I would like to know why the pikeys (gypsies) aren’t being harassed by the police for not having a tv license. Oh and while we are at it whose electricity did they steal to power the tv?

  6. This looks like a job for Ed the Sock! [cue gnarly whiskey and cigars voice] “Hi kids! You wanna know where BABIES come from?!!! Get this…” [cue children’s chorus] “Eeeeeew!”
Scary thing is, that probably wouldn’t get you sued. Edjicashunal, y’know.
At a certain point, saying “Good morning” will assume politically incorrect overtones, and will be considered “inappropriate” enough to require police investigation. At that point we shall see who among the 125 odd million people living on Churchill’s aircraft carrier still got a pair.
Oh well, the Brits already had one civil war over religious buffoonery, maybe its time for another. Check out the Puritans some time and you’ll discover their behavior was almost identical to today’s PC/envirowhacko/socialist crowd. After the fanatics seize power the mass of citizenry usually grinds them down fairly quickly. It only took the Russians 80 years to grind away the Bolsheviks, so England has a bright future.
After 50-60 years of horrid tyranny, perhaps.

  7. What do you know about Gipsies, Kate? Probably not very much. Best stick to territory you know, than wander into discussions beyond your grasp.
This does, at first glance, seem a bit idiotic. But it has to be seen in light of recent European developments, including the issue of gipsies in Europe. They are citizens of their countries, and have EU passports, but stereotypes pervade and they are still running from country to country. And being treated as second class citizens in these countries.
One of the main issues highlighted by the various EU studies on this is the generally negative manner in which gipsies are viewed. The EU is, of course, concerned by the fact that it suddenly has a bunch of second class citizens who are claiming systematic abuse in various countries, and furthermore, moving across EU borders, since they are, after all, EU citizens.
They move from country to country. Stereotypes ensure that they are viewed with suspicion in each. They are treated badly as a result.
How do you fix this? By targetting stereotypers, which is precisely what the complainant has said he is doing. It wasnt any less harmless then than it is now. However now, with populations moving across borders to escape persecution in countries such as Slovakia, Italy etc, the realities are becoming more visible and there is a need to address it.
Humans change with experience. Thirty years ago, this stuff might have been deemed inoffensive, which it was not. Gipsies just ignored it. Now they arent willing to. Enough is enough, at some point. And they have every right to protest it. It is a stereotype, and they know a thing or two about stereotype based discrimination.
But lets jsut judge books by their cover, shall we?

  8. This is ridiculous. A racist puppet. How the hell can a puppet be racist?
Political correctness has gone too far when we have police investigating puppets for evidence of thought crimes.
Maybe they ought, instead, to investigate what the fortuneteller is doing with her left hand. It looks possible that something’s going on there that has no place on a childrens’ show.

“sputum says… the various EU studies on this is the generally
negative manner in which gipsies are viewed”

hey, sput… we at the “puppet liberation front” are right behind you…
i mean, “if the united states can put a man on the moon, why can’t
they do something about those poor folks on ‘gilligan’s island’?”

  10. Wow- three minutes, I am impressed.
Now – if I put out a call for someone to send me 10K, how long will that take??
Nice try though Sput, but do you realise what you are saying? Does everyone that gets stereotyped (read offended) by somone else automatically have the right to call for a police investigation (and get it)? Or does this apply only to special groups, if so what discriminating factor applied here?
Have you missed all the discussions about the HRCs here on SDA?
You don’t fix this by targetting (i.e. criminalising ) sterotypes or offending people, all that does is create even more resentment and social dis-integration.
You FIX this type of crap by treating all people that same! Simple, why can’t lefties ever get this point!
If you want to end the stereotpying of gypsies, then:
    1) crack down on their illegal land occupations, I can’t do it why can they?
    2) crack down on their illegal welfare scams by forcing them to say where they live?
    3) crack down on their criminal activity (lots of police and media reports here, better yet – talk to a veteran cop in the UK)!
This is not racist, nor stereotyping – just facts, I know you won’t believe me but Google can help you on this rather quickly!!
However, as seems to be the case more and more often with the rise of the PC crowd, the cops have clearly lost sight of what policing means. There are lots of better things they could be doing with their time than watching puppet plays for offensive material. My kid can do that far more effectively by switching channels!!!

  11. poor sput. having lived his life in the basement of moms house with a 14 inch monitor hasnt had the first hand cultural experience of one or two of these pikeys or gippos trying to lift his wallet at train station in Paris.

  12. The British police seem to have an easier time charging a puppet for hate, than charging the racist, bigoted, mysogynyst, murder-all-Jews-and-kaffir bastards who run most of the mosqueses in England. Then again, they’ve got people like sput siding with them, so the police have to find Someone…

  13. Ah but this is stereotyping since it assumes that ALL gypsies engage in such activities.
Oddly enough you are making the same argument as me re: treating all persons the same. Somehow that argument does not resonate in other topics on this board. Some groups go onto pedestals while others are consigned to subhuman levels.
Since you arent engaging in the name-calling that pervades this board, let me explain the problem, as it stands. Anyway, lets look at what you say.
“1) crack down on their illegal land occupations, I can’t do it why can they?”
Fair enough. But where will they live. The facts say Gypsies are crooks, criminals, cheats etc. Which landlord will rent them a home. They are not rich – where will they get money to buy their own property from. On the one hand you want them to conform to the rules of society, but, given that society discriminates them, can they even play within the rules? Would you rent your land to a gypsy? Most people on this board certainly wouldnt, and that is why they have become so problematic in Europe. They are citizens. But they are seen as outsiders. They cant integrate into society because of the suspicion levelled against them. They are isolated by society and abandoned by the state. Is it any wonder they resort to their tricks?
One solution would see the government provide housing. But where? Would you want a gypsy as your neighbor? In democracies, these arent minor questions.
“2) crack down on their illegal welfare scams by forcing them to say where they live?”
No job = no money. No job for the same reason that they dont have addresses. No one is willing to lend them land, give them a job etc. Its just the logical conclusion of turning a group into second class citizens.
That doesnt justify welfare scams, but I would be loathe to believe that only gypsies engage in welfare scams.
“3) crack down on their criminal activity (lots of police and media reports here, better yet – talk to a veteran cop in the UK)!”
They do crack down. The Italians did recently. Their solution was novel – kick them out. But where will they go? This is a problem that is a lot deeper than most people want to admit.
“Does everyone that gets stereotyped (read offended) by somone else automatically have the right to call for a police investigation (and get it)?”
Stereotyped does not read offended. I assume you are making the oft-made argument that stereotypes are based on reality. However, humans change through experience and stereotypes get outdated. Unless of course you keep applying it to a group to the point that they have nothing to lose by embracing the stereotype. Keep calling gypsies criminals – deny them jobs etc on those grounds. But then dont be too surprised when they say “Okay. You re going to treat me like a criminal anyway. I might as well become one – that way I wont lose out on as much as I would if I stayed clean”.
Besides, it isnt just the PC crowd that makes such claims. Remember the gay teletubbies? If homosexuality was a crime, the police would be all over it. This is an allegation of a recognized crime – racism.
otter – when did I side with ‘them’?

  14. My brother was in Rome last September and on the crowded subway. Both he and another man in the tour were almost robbed by teams of gypsys but they were foiled by plain closed cops. One guy kept gently bumping my brother to distract him while a guy on his other side almost had my brother’s camera out of his pocket.
The local Italians always warned the tourists in his group to watch out for the gypsys especially the gangs of their kids that will swarm you.
Saw lots of these people in Portugal last year. We were on a tram and this guy was wandering around getting off at some stops then getting back on quickly. At one stop the doors opened and two plain closed cops jumped on and literaly whipped the guy out the doorway and into handcuffs. Locals beside us said just another gypsy crook.

  15. “The wisecracking puppet, who has been on children’s TV since the Sixties, is being investigated by the police for racism, after his show featured a gipsy selling pegs and heather.”
Do we really have to discuss how sophist progressives have become?
As with everything so called progressives politicize the most mundane aspects of life by finding political enemies and ideological bogey men in the most innocuous places. This is the result of adopting an orthodoxy which turns your life into a political crusade.
Seeing this sad state of psychotic progressivism I wonder how many of the great Borsht belt comedians would be arrested as enemies of the state racial codes …I can see Don Rickles or Jakie Mason doing large time in a progressivist re-education center.

  16. Sput, read the National Geographic article on Gypsies. Their families are involved in criminal behaviour because that is what they do and have done for generations. Their basically nomads. The article pointed out they do not want to live in homes and have a regular life so please stop trying to write how cruel society treats them. These guys don’t have GYPSY written on their forheads. Nothing stops them getting a regular job or living a normal life.
Do some research before you ramble on with the leftist crap of how these poor souls are always being picked on.

  17. “These guys don’t have GYPSY written on their forheads. Nothing stops them getting a regular job or living a normal life.”
They do. Its their skin colour. Its brown. Its been used to discriminate against them. For generations.
Stealing is not a lifestyle choice. Yes, it is possible that they know no better, having done it for generations. But what you are conveniently missing is the fact that they are being mistreated by governments and society.
They are so alienated from society, that Governments have had to create segregated schools for them. These schools, not surprisingly, have been a huge failure, largely because they are an afterthought and deprived of resources.
Do some research before you ramble on with the (rightist? or just plain uninformed?)crap of how these crooks get what they deserve.

  18. Nations can have wonderful constitutions and still totally control their citizens. Witness the Soviet Union.

  19. *
“sputum says… They do. Its their skin colour. Its brown.”
yeah… tell that to colin powell, thurgood marshall or condi rice.
sput… maybe these guys can help you with that poor me shit…
    1-800-cry-baby.

  20. neo,
Why dont you try to follow the exchange?
Gypsies are visible by virtue of their skin color. They cannot simply blend into local populations, especially in Eastern Europe where the situation is most acute.

  21. Sput,
Gypsies have no money so your solution is for the government to give them money. Gypsies have no land so your suggestion is to give them land.
I guess you’ve never visited a First Nations Reservation eh?
Those who operate outside the bounds of the law do not deserve the protection of the law.
Gypsies have 2 choices, to evolve as a community and fight the stereotypes given to them with hard work (like the Irish) or they can bitch and complain and expect everything to be given to them without any work (like a socialist).
Wake up son. Theft everywhere is wrong. Saying stealing isn’t just a lifestyle choice because they want things for free is like saying rape isn’t just a lifestyle choice because they want to get laid.
You should check out the definition of equality. What you are arguing for is more equality for some.

  22. Sput – …Ah but this is stereotyping since it assumes that ALL gypsies engage in such activities….
really, where did I say all. I specifically wrote their illegal land…, their illegal welfare…, their criminal…
They do have some legal land occupations, they do have some legal welfare cases and, of course, if an activity is legal by definition it is not criminal. This is not stereotpying, it’s called being specific.
Don’t stereotype me as a stereotyper just because I am conservative!!
    Sput – …
Fair enough. But where will they live…
Ahhh, but this is the kicker isn’t it. The famous excuse: alas, where will they live.
Well, let me enlighten you about UK welfare. You see, the UK DOES provide house to people. Lots of houses, lots and lots of houses. Every town in the UK, no matter how small, is almost forciblly mandated to have some council housing in it or very nearby it.
So, if providing free housing to them while they collect their welfare benefits is the solution then it already exists. Any gypsy that would ask for a house would be given it overnight from the council, Unfortunately they would also be immediately outcast from Gypsy society for buying in (hmmm, where have we seen this before).
Gypsies are not FORCEd to be outsiders, they CHOOSE to be outsiders as they put “protection of their CULTURE” above pragmatic reality. Why, oh why, can they simply not be told to compromise a little to provide a better life for their children. After all, we (as in mainstream society) are continuously told to compromise in order to accomodate other marginalised people. Wouldn’t this work a little better if it were seen to be give and take at least a little on both sides.
In the end, I simply don’t buy the devil made me do it argument. That argument is simply a way to make excuses for known bad behaviour (when i say known, I mean everybody recognizes that theyn shouldn’t be engaging in that behaviour, otherwise what is the point of making an excuse for good behavior???).
Either you choose to be responsible for your life or you let someone/thing else make the decisions for you. Right wingers tend to choose the former while lefties choose the latter, which is why the fault lines along any particular topic are always so predictable!!

  23. BTW: FYI – Right wingers tend to choose the former while lefties choose the latter..
    That statement is a sterotype!!

  24. I think this inquiry is going to run into a bit of a problem given that the UK has already outlawed the Fox hunt!
This post comes from a proud Canadian who was born in Scotland where stereotypically I was to be a tight fisted kilt wearing, scotch drinking haggis eating heathen.
Funny thing, since I became proud Canadian I am still most of the above.
    Sput get a life!

  25. When I was in Ireland for my first visit in 1985 the site of caravans parked along the side of the road with washing draped over the fence mystified me. Then I was told they were gypsies.
I loved this: “Travellers have historically sold heather and pegs, but they don’t do it anymore for a living. It could be that someone thought this was a kind of stereotyping.”
What I discovered in Ireland in 1985 is that they were above all that and instead sent out their ragged waif-like children and half-starved wives holding a baby in their arms to beg for alms.
I hate being blackmailed and didn’t give any of them a penny (and I’m not proud of it).

  26. The politically incorrect term for many years in England was “Gipsy”, this is because it was used to some extent as a put down. The politically correct term was “travellers”.

This posed an eventual problem. It meant that the true gypsies then became lumped in with the other “gypsies”. I cannot remember the name of the book but the figures are of true gypsy stock in the UK. This being 5000 to 7000 persons. The travellers and indeed also called “New Age Travellers number about 90,000 persons.

The “Romany Rye” was written by George Borrow. He died in 1881. He was
accepted by the gypsies. His other book was “Gypsy Putulengro” which I have read. A quote from “The Romany Rye”.

“To mande shoon ye Romany chals
Who besh in the pus about
    the yag,
I’ll pen how we drab the baulo,
I’ll pen how we drab the baulo.”

There ain’t many of yer latter day gypsies that can translate that- I will warrant.

  27. Sput,
Colour has noting to do with it. There is no difference between the look of a Romanian and a Gypsy besides what they wear.
Gypsies have a bad rep because they earned that rep by travelling around stealing. That is their culture. That culture puts them against everyone else. When gypsies stop stealing for a living, those people they’re stealing from won’t have to fear and distrust them.
Their plight is their problem. They take from others. The “others” they take from don’t like them for it. Who’s fault is that?

  28. Sorry Frenchie, swamped with work. And cant be bothered playing devil’s advocate anymore either.
warwick, the gipsy folk trace their roots to India and in general arent known for their intermingling. They would stand out in Romania, less so in Italy, because Italians are darker. Go look at pictures of Gipsy folk.

  29. Sput,
    YOU said:
“They do. Its their skin colour. Its brown. Its been used to discriminate against them. For generations.”
I said BS, that colour had nothing to do with it.
You come back bashing me for suggesting the Gypsies are dark. Do you have more than one personality and which one am I conversing with now? Or maybe you just forgot what you wrote.

  30. Gypsies are often great fun to be around. No worries about hydro bills, rents or mortgages and they can play great guitar too. = TG

  31. Their skin colour is not brown as they are originally from Russia and parts of Eastern Europe hence they liked to be called Roma as in Romania. Gypsies look just like regular Europians except for their clothes in some cases. They like to travel in caravans pulled by horses as I saw in our campground in central France.
Sput, amazing only YOU seemed to be informed on everything. Must be a lefty troll trait, never admit your wrong, make it up if you have to but never back down. An old Turdeau lesson 101.

  32. sput at 7:16 AM
    sput you’re an idiot
and yes I am a gypsy
read the rest of your posts, and you are still an idiot, an uninformed idiot
and, yes folks, sput is correct on one matter in that many gypsies (such as my father had) have swarty complexion:-))))))
