I Think We Should Demote This Island To “Municipality”

Because, really – what could they do about it? Threaten to take 70,000 civil servants out of Confederation? Spark a potato famine? Throw bottles?
I mean, there are 22 bigger islands in this country. Who are they kidding?
Take away the government buildings and the fixed link, and what do you have left? A breakwater for Nova Scotia.

  1. who would make those shows?
    “Anne of Stilted Dialogue”
    “Road to Government Subsidies”

  2. My Vancouver-born father, whose grandmother was born in New Brunswick, has always said that “if PEI is a province, then Vancouver Island should be a province”; and BC can find a new capital (Prince George, anyone?).

  3. With all due respect to jw, size doesn’t matter in this case.I think that Charlottetown’s place in the early development of the confederation movement is the only real reason PEI is still a province. If forced to stand on their own and without federal dollars, PEI would certainly revert to a territory of Canada. Having said that, the whole concept of equalization payments that is so boldly entrenched, would preclude this from ever happening. We are stuck with the big red mud.

  4. PEI must be some kind of environmental paradise! I mean it, really. How else can you explain the Environment Dept. going after such a minor offence, especially when it’s becoming legal in less than two months?

  5. They have the time to do this because they have 3 levels of government, governing 150,000 people. Can you guess who the major employer is, the Canadian Taxpayer. As far as this cowboy is concerned, all of the maritime provinces should be as one, I actually think it would strengthen them.
It certainly is time to revue equalization.

  6. “PEI must be some kind of environmental paradise! How else can you explain the Environment Dept. going after such a minor offence”
    MikeM: Think local bottling plant.

  7. I am a Prince Edward Islander and agree with much of what you say. However, rather than proposing we be demoted to “municipality” status, perhaps you could link to some of the initiatives currently underway, like Atlantica. The Atlantica party wants to join the Maritime provinces together to achieve less government and self-sufficiency for NS, NB and PEI.
Keep in mind that our provincial status was part of the deal in getting us to join Canada 6 yrs after confederation in 1873.
The stupid can ban in finally going, Sunday shopping is coming soon too I hope. However, keep in mind that there are some unique and positive policies in place here. We are the only jurisdiction in N. American without abortion on demand.

  8. 4 MP’s for a population smaller than most urban ridings.
    Rep by pop anyone ??
The island usually votes Liberal because they promise to keep the pogey & other subsidies flowing.
Don’t get me started on their Senators.

  9. For years pop in cans has been a controversy on the Island under the slogan “Ban the Can”. For years I’ve been a Pan-the-Ban-the-Can-Plan-Man.
Here’s Charlottetown’s official theme song (to the tune “Kansas City”.
    I’m going to Canless City
    Canless city here I come
They’ve got some crazy little bottles there
And I’m gonna get me one!

  10. As long as PEI has Wayne Easter shouting at vein popping decibels every time he stands in the House they’ll have at least a voice. The quintessential Potato/spud head.
By the way, their potatoes are no good either so that’s also going to cost us.

  11. Damn straight there John! They go to the other extreme and don’t recycle bottles or cans although ammunition is.

  12. The guy makes a dollar a 12 pack .
How much does the under-cover agent from the ministry of illegal cans make ?
    $100, 000/yr with pension.
    Canada requires a tax revolt.

  13. There is an actual island known as “Rhode Island” within that state. The full and formal name of the state is actually the “State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations”, but it’s shortened to Rhode Island for practical purposes.

  14. Oh, I don’t know.
This silly incident merely shows that small size is no obstacle to exhibiting all the hairbrained politics of any other Canadian province…

  15. I propose a Canyoto Agreement, complete with a Can Trading Credit Program. We can promote it with a film “A Convenience Store Truth”. Problem solved.

  16. “Yeah, and where does Delaware get off? Texas, now that’s a state!”
Delaware does very nicely thanks to its stable and friendly corporate regime. It is one of the lowest-tax jurisdictions in the northeast, since it gets so much of its revenue from corporate frnchise taxes. Sure $350 a year does not seem like a lot, but multiply that by several millions, and you’re talking real money.

  17. Legalized pop cans?!? What’s next? Unencumbered legal year-round Sunday shopping? If PEI isn’t careful they’ll reap the Lord’s wrath for becomming the reincarnation of Gomorrah.

  18. I’m glad the cops busted another unrepentant Coke dealer. Personally, I could never get the cans up my nose…

  19. PEI the greatest scam in Canada
4 senators, 4 MPs. 27 MLAs most all lieberals.
    population of 140,000
highest level of outright house ownership in Canada,
    highest level of civil servitude.
all on OPM, other peoples money.
they dont have to do the howl like Dan Whine for Wine Williams, they have a constitutional guarantee.

  20. Laugh if you want but it must be nice to live in a community where pop in cans is a serious concern. Here in Vancouver we have city patrols armed with tongs and bio-hazard boxes. They search alleys and playgrounds for used syringes.

  21. “Laugh if you want but it must be nice to live in a community where pop in cans is a serious concern.”
    Indeed.

  22. They came into confederation under certain conditions. The founding fathers of Canada agreed to those conditions.
    Its about integrity and honour.
Both of which are abundantly present in the post by cal2:

I like the way he specifies that the MLA’s are Liberal. Would his views change if they were Tories?
Glad to know Canadians respect the opinions, political or otherwise, of other canadians.

  23. Being among the first into Confederation deserves its rewards! Let’s not be mean-spirited about all of this.

  24. Actually, pop cans are the least of our problems. The recycling enthusiasm is a bit of a pain, and likely costly – but well-intentioned. Less well intentioned are the attempts to ‘conform’ the Island to accept the social decline of the rest of the country as ‘progress’. Abortion access would be one example. How they have managed to avoid it , is down to them still having remnants of a Christian culture on the Island.
I haven’t met any farmers or fishermen, or restaurant owners, or civil servant, or …well anybody in PEI who isn’t well intentioned, hard working and honest. Maybe I go around in the wrong circles.
When we get home, and cross the bridge, our troubles are left behind on the mainland. Our family comes to visit us for the same reason. There’s a way of life that is an ‘island’ way, and that perspective is valuable to Canada. No province has the monopoly on intelligence or work ethic. To suggest that, is to lie to oneself about the merits of one’s own contribution. Not a great way to forge ahead. The comments in this thread are a good reason not to trust the federal conservatives – people from away who think PEI is full of lazy idiots. (is that what you really believe?!)
Just to be perfectly clear, I do support the Conservative Party . I just don’t support it being for only ‘the important ,intelligent and wealthy.’

  25. Is that your image west of the New Brunswick border of PEI? All Liberal all the time forever, on welfare or civil servants money?
    Your pathetic.

  26. yup
remember , I am one of dem boyz from out der, by jeezus.
you can vote but youz gant ide.

  27. PEI is crazy in ways but BC is worse.
And so what if there are 22 bigger islands in the country – are you saying Baffin Island is more deserving of status as a province?
The main problem with PEI is the economy, too many people don’t want to work with the EI flowing so freely.
But it’s a beautiful place and should remain a province, it’s the nicest maritime province of them all.

  28. the population of vancouver island is 700,000 with a similar lifestyle, gubmint money, civil servants, retirees and pot(tater) grow ops.
they dont have any senators dedicated but do have 6 MPs. 2 more to represent those extra 550,000 folks.
    PEI is a scam.
red dirt , red ink , and no canned drinks.

  29. I’ll tell you, its easy to spot the happy maritimers when you get out west. They walk and talk and dance and sing with other people. The westerners sit and glower holding their beer. They must be thinking how unfair it is to have all the natural resources and money, but no discernable culture.
(Born in edmonton of good solid pioneer stock – but the whining, the whining!)

  30. Actually the “ban the can” thing is not as uncommon as one might suppose. When I lived in Calgary in the 70s and 80s, beer in cans was not allowed (it is now). Pretty frustrating if one wanted to take beer camping, what with the time difference in cooling bottled beer vs. canned beer in an ice-filled cooler.
And I went through the whole Sunday shopping debate in Alberta, only to move to Ontario and having to go through it again a few years later. Painful to listen to the empty rhetoric about “family values” etc…

  31. Has spud Island banned smoking in cars yet? If not it is way behind in the CONTROL fanaticism of places like the Yukon, Alta and Ontario – for ‘the health of the children’ they might need some ‘out of state’ ENFORCERS if they have not caught up with their Red Tory and Puffin cousins.

  32. jema45
“”””for ‘the health of the children’ “””””
lil brats should be glad to be alive, maybe they can katch smokers cancer from their parent’s secondhand smoke. Radiation treatment for this luvable afliction is such phun, ask me, I’ll tell you just how fun it is.

  33. I like the way he specifies that the MLA’s are Liberal. Would his views change if they were Tories?
Glad to know Canadians respect the opinions, political or otherwise, of other canadians
about 90% liberal – good enough. all liberal MPs, 90% liberal MLAs is there a more bloodsucking combination possible? not even if they were all dippers, because the dips will never form a government and therefore couldnt steal the treasury like the liberals have already demonstrated in adscam.

  34. Back to the topic of pop cans and the fact that this man actually did break the law, albeit a stupid one to begin with and being one lifted soon, nonetheless the actions of the authorities smacks of ‘jackboot’ style of handling things in a normally ‘soft’ social structured community.
Meanwhile sick Canadians are dying to get medical treatment, but hey, lets give more money to people who make up hurt feelings on the internet…

  35. Well, the LAW is, at present….NO CANS. That’s pretty clear, I’d say.
Kate, have you BEEN to Prince Edward Island?
Let me shed a bit of light for you, even if you have been there.
As beautifull a place, you cannot imagine. No large billboards, or road signs screaming at you.
Mostly the island is pristine. The culture pays homage to a way of life only very slowly changing from days gone by. You could find similar communities in your Saskatchewan. I know Alberta, has similar oasies of tranquility.
Things change very slowly there, a quality that is very much appreciated by the thousands of visitors who visit every year. The same ethereal atmosphere, that would not withstand a full frontal Disneyland type of assault. Fast food. Loud cabarets. Large commercial hotel enterprises do not fit, and are damaging to the essense, offered “on the island”.
    Niche is where it at!
Don’t try and equate a low impact esthetic environment with “low commercial” value. What is the value of tranquility.
    Ask the visitors.
Of course, tarted up tourist “cottages” are springing up,slowly the respectfull godfearing ways will evapourate. And sure, I have a personal connection, my father, a retired military member, is from there. In the sixties, us kids would spend a month or so, on my grandfathers farm where my uncles would make hay, and attend to other farming tasks. Slagging PEI, you cross a line. After all the NDP are well rooted in.. well you know.
The voters may be liberal, and politicians can sure bait the hooks, but the value of a days work is not lost there. Not yet anyway

  36. “Can we sell PEI to Denmark?”
No way, mate. We trade it to them for sovereignity of Han island.
But I don’t know why they would want it.

  37. Lest anyone take personal umbrage about province bashing, those new here should understand this is what Canadians do to pass the winter. This winter has been particularly aggressive in some areas, so you can expect the bashing to be too. Come summer, we’ll all make nice and fight one another for the best campsites, and wax eloquent about how much better this place is then back home.
Hey, Saskatchewan, when are you going to quit subsidized farming, murdering one another in Saskatoon, and move to Alberta to become oil patch slaves? Ontario wants to turn Saskabush into a Disney theme park, (or maybe a reservation…) 🙂
