  1. Yep. Obama supporters tend to be younger, college educated, and/or more affluent. Oprah’s crowd (I think) skews more toward the middle aged and poor; a group that, among Democrats, leans Clinton.

  2. Check your local listings. Oprah’s “crowd” isn’t a product of her politics. It’s comprised of stay-at-home moms, retirees, etc. and as such, isn’t a “Democratic” demographic.

  3. .
When the Hollywood twits start pontificating and speculating it is almost Felliniesque …
Some of the best entertaining these dolts are actually are capable of.
    .

  4. IMHO, the only reason Winfrey is stumping for Obama is because they share the same skin colour.

  5. I always pick up Oprah’s mag. at the check out, then put it right back into the rack backwards.

  6. Maybe to get her support back, she can start crying again about the puppy taken back by the adoption agency…
Oh no wait, that was another irrelevant entertainer.

  7. Oprah could have supported Obama with $$$.
Instead she is using her “celebrity” in an open fashion. Might get more people to look at Obama.
In the end, will America vote for a female or black president? (or black/female ticket?)
Some have McCain/Lieberman, or Bloomberg/? as spoilers.
There is still lots of time, the Iowa primary is just the start.

  8. I have always thought that wading through Oprah’s deepest thoughts would not get your feet wet. Her support of Obama just validates this. She has become enormously successful precisely because of her superficiality. Her audience does not want to be disturbed by in depth analysis. They want a little entertainment, some feel good and a chance to zone out. Her backing Obama forces some of them to say wait a minute, it’s one thing for an entertainer to be shallow but do I really want the POTUS to be.

  9. Well, I’D vote for a female or black for president. But not based on sex or color. Condi Rice would make a decent president; Clarence Thomas would make a good president; Walter Williams would make a good president…On the other hand Barack Obama would make a lousy president; Jesse Jackson would make a lousy president; Al Sharpton would make a lousy president.
It’s not necessarily a question of government experience. It’s a question of developed intellect and personal philosophy. Lest anyone forget, Abraham Lincoln had only had one term in the Illinois State Legislature and one term in the US Congress when he was elected President in 1860. He did a pretty good job-saving the United States, eliminating slavery and one or two other things.

  10. Really, Oprah is taking herself to down a few pegs by getting involved in politics as do all celebrities. However, it matters little to Oprah, she’s reached a point in life where it matters not, she’s filthy rich and can do whatever she wishes without compromising anything affecting her life.
If the celebrities can be influential in electing someone to power in any country like the US, we better all be very afraid.

  11. I understand a lot of Obama’s turnout consists of people who want to get laid.
As has been pointed out earlier, Obama has always attracted a young, hip, affluent crowd.
They interviewed a couple of young dudes who drove up in their Mercedes with their Kenny G CDs playing..
And they confided to the interviewer, “Yeah man, at an Obama rally, you know you’re gonna make out.”
So in this sense I guess Oprah is an appropriate spokesman for Obama. But just remember, down the road she’ll be doing a program on deadbeat dads.

If Barack Obama makes it to the convention, I may vote for him. I voted for Clinton in 92 but
Bush both times. We do need an “Honest” change! 20 years in South New Jersey teaches street smarts.
How can you eat that PA “Scrapple” ?

  13. Shall we call this Oprah’s regression?
Jeez, Greg, is getting laid one of the qualifications to run as a Democrat?
It’ll be too bad for Willy if Hilly loses, he’d have such fun playing around the White House while wifey attends serious business.

You make good points but that’s just you. I have a feeling that when most Americans get into the
privacy of the voting booth, they will reject both a Negro and a woman. That’s not to say that
they are in any way prejudiced, just that they aren’t comfortable at this time in their lives to do so. Perhaps that is not a good way of choosing a candidate, but I believe that is reality.
As for Abe Lincoln, he really wasn’t that good of a politician. His original idea was to send the Negros to Panama to fend for themselves. When he saw that they were joining the Union Army in droves and were proving themselves on the battlefield, he felt forced to grant them their freedom. A great orator and a good man, but he’s not the icon that one is led to believe.
Remember, we are dealing with 2008, not 1860.

  15. “Jeez, Greg, is getting laid one of the qualifications to run as a Democrat?”
    Liz,
Yes. I think so. At least since John Kennedy.
A while back Larry Flint of Hustler fame was doing everything the magazine could for the Democratic National Committee.
“The Democratic National Committee invites you to the annual hot tub fund raiser.”
And following upon this by a number of months, Hugh Hefner and Playboy Enterprises announced its intention to help Democrats.
I remember getting in touch with our own Senator Hutchison at the time and explaining to her that Democrats should not be chastised for their affiliation with Hugh Hefner, because it demonstrated quite a growth in psycho-social development over their partnership with Hustler.

  16. Redneck Ralph, you’ve got that right, if Obama never existed Hillary would have had Oprah’s endorsement in a heartbeat. I’m betting her thought processes were: do I go with First Black or First Female President? When the options unfolded this year she chose race, the transparency of which even her ardent fans have figured out.
I’m guessing that Hillary has sent nicely worded little notes asking Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and the rest of the toxic birdbrains in Hollywood she panhandles checks from to refrain from public endorsements. She’s smart enough, not driven by morality mind you, to understand that most of those idiots have endorsed Hugo Chavez too.
That Hollywood and terrorists would never endorse or want a Republican in the White House is criteria enough for me to never vote for a Democrat.
Dave in Pa. has it right. It’s all about content not race or gender, Americans aren’t prejudiced in either realm when voting issues. Case in point is Bobby Jindal’s election in Louisiana. He’s presidential material in the years to come.

  17. Actually, I think it will not be long before Hollywood comes to the Clintons’ rescue and memorializes their saga with a movie.
I see ‘The Clinton Years’ as being changed to a more cinematic title, ‘La Dolce Vita, American Style.”
Yes, this Scorching Drama, ripped from the very pages of Modern History, a Carlo Ponti film,
Starring Sophia Loren as Hillary Clinton!
    Marcello Mastroiani as Bill Clinton!
And Washington, DC, as the cynical, Naples-like background to a Torrid Drama, of Love, Power, Passion, and Betrayal!!
A Sweeping Saga, destined to stir North Americans to their very Core!
La Dolce Vita, American Style (translated from the Italian, It Happened in Naples), coming to a theatre near you.

  18. The theme could be “in Napoli where love is free”….
It never ceases to amaze what Liberals/Democrats can do and still garner adoration from the masses. Conservatives would be driven out and castigated without mercy if they so much as tell a lie.
Willy did it all and lied on National TV besides about his low down trashy behaviour.

  19. oprah can campaign for whomever she wishes. after all, it’s her right as an american. as far as obama, can he do any worse than bush has?
