Exactly. That’s what I’ve been saying since the details behind this event have been revealed. Clearly this was an accident waiting to happen, and yet people still decided to make their homes in what is an extremely dangerous area. Reminds me of that Harry Truman character who lived at the base of Mount Saint Helens and refused to leave, even after multiple warnings. You just can’t fix stupid.

I love your comments! I was living in Calgary in June 2013 when the downtown and some of the more expensive neighborhoods flooded after some terrific rain storms. Call me crazy, but if you build on a “floodplain”, with the conjunction of 2 rivers (The Bow and the Elbow) do not be surprised if it floods.
Same thing used to happen in Winnipeg – a floodplain with the Red and the Assiniboine rivers. Until the perimeter dyke was built in the late 1950’s by the provincial government, flooding was an annual event. Our father had to leave our parents’ honeymoon early to come back to lay sandbags around homes on his parents’ street.
I am in my 75th summer and I am still amazed at most people’s stupidity!
Humans aren’t as intelligent as we like to think we are. We have a long history of living in places where in retrospect, we shouldn’t have built homes and cities. And despite the history and warning signs, we continue to make the same mistakes over and over again.
Prime real estate is always in the worst of flood plains. Lots of money but short on brains.
Probably because they live in a craphole and there isn’t many places to go. They probably get water and fertile land from the glacier & stuff.
