Here’s a detail they may have left out of your morning news. I know they left it out of mine;
New Life Church Pastor Brady Boyd is speaking to the media right now. He reports that the female church security guard rushed to the building when she heard shots ring out. She was stationed at a rotunda. She has a law enforcement background. “She probably saved a hundred lives.” They put the security/evacuation plan in place after hearing about the first church attack. Volunteers joined security details. Armed security all have licenses to carry.
Pastor Boyd: “We’re so grateful to God for giving us the wisdom to do that.”
Emphasis mine. More: When you legislate gun-free zones, only the mass murderers have guns.

You might want to read John 2:15.

Sure Phantom,
That’s why there is so much less gun crime in the gun-cultured US than here….mmmm?
You are a typical blogosphere idiot who only knows how to debate from one singular POV….
“I’m right….you’re stupid”
Don’t bore me.
Daniel,
I agree back.
Arming everyone,or banishing everyone from gun ownership,neither WILL EVER STOP those hell-bent on destructive displays in search of infamy.
It is so telling that the MAIN POINT of my original post was utterly ignored in favor of people pushing their own pro or anti gun agendas.
I was simply pointing out that the BEST WAY to solve this fairly new western phenomenom was to CREATE BETTER CITIZENS.
Any one care to comment on that?
Sheeesh.
ol hoss,
Jesus drove out the money changers. A few sheep, calves, and doves where liberated and some bankers were inconvenienced. What’s the point?
kgp
So Teddy, just to be clear: did you read that John Lott paper?
If you had read it, you’d discover an interesting thing. Crime rates per 100,000 in the USA are essentially the same as in Canada, if you exclude the high crime areas of the large cities.
Odd, don’t you think?
Tell you another odd thing. Outside large cities, the rate of gun ownership is almost identical between Canada and the USA.
What has been different between the two countries up until recently has been the lower urban crime rate. That is changing rapidly in Toronto, as we see from the climbing murder rate.
In addition, these shooting rampages have started turning up in Europe. Good old, civilized, gun controlled Europe.
Inconvenient for your theory, yes?
I don’t, as you say, “debate from one point of view”. I state the facts as I have discovered them through 12 years of scholarship on this subject.
Sorry if that bores you.
Kevin:
One of Jesus’ primary “rules” was not to get trapped into sanctimonious mental straight jackets by trying to too literally apply some bit of scripture or another. The Pharisees went after Jesus for healing on the Sabbath and Jesus rebuked them for thinking that keeping some rule or other makes a difference.
We who are Christians live in a real world with real world evil that must be countered or controlled. Nothing fits into neat little packages. As one sage noted for evil to succeed good men must do nothing.
I believe it was Chesterton who compared Christianity to a man riding a horse one minute hanging off one side the next minute clinging to the other side the whole while looking like he is about to fall off any second. Only after a time does the observer realize that the rider is an expert horseman and in complete control of every move he makes upon the back of the horse. The switching sides is comparable to we Christians who are told to turn the other cheek and defend the defenceless, then put in a place where we must decide. Were it simply a threat against me I would endeavour to turn the other cheek. If it were a threat against a group of people I would do what I had to do to limit the carnage.

You’ll have to come up with a better example than that. Yashua broke no scripture. Sabbath means “rest” and Jesus Christ is our rest (sabbatismos, Hebrews 4:9-10).
Or, as Jesus succinctly put it;
Matthew 12:8 “For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.”
Being a Christian means every day is the Sabbath, for we rest in Christ every day.
The lady who killed this murderer understood that “turning the other cheek” doesn’t extend to being a doormat for every crazy who comes along. “Pearls before swine”, and all that…
Actually ol hoss Jesus also speaking of the Sabbath asked the Pharisees what they would do on the Sabbath if one of their animals fell into a pit. Would they do the humane thing and lift the animal out or do the inhumane thing and let the animal suffer so they wouldn’t be breaking their holdfast tradition. BTW I never said or implied that Yeshua ever broke any Scriptural injunction.
