Liberals are touchy girliemen, pass it on!
My comments on the recent speeches Dion made loaded with cliches and little sloganish plays on words and canned jokes.
My insights come from having once in another life been a speechwriter for politicians.
Can anybody check and see how close I come:
1. I believe Dion got a new writer in the past 3 or so weeks.
2. From the style of writing and the shallow cliches I am thinking this is a young person, probably male maybe with a fresh degree in polysci but not in public relations.
The language is not in Dion’s own generation for sure and not that of a so called senior statesman who has been in politics for 10 years or more. It is NOT at all professorial.
3. The attack type words and phrases are really shallow – just partisan young socialist hype that you read on the Liblogs all the time.
4. This writer will have to get more of a feel for Dion’s delivery so the jokes work and stop trying to use alliteration that a man who struggles with the language may not even get himself.
Hopefully this speech writer won’t be the one also writing Dion’s policy like Martin used Scott Reid (beer and popcorn) for.
Reid would put asinine words into Martin’s mouth in the heat of things and then we had Mr. Dithers trying to spit them out.
Anyways – political speechwriting is a challenge and an art so powerful that they can make or break a politician. Watch the US – good political speechwriters are paid millions and elections are even won or lost on one good or bad speech.
I have always said though that the best speeches are written for the men and women who have the best ideas in the first place.
IN other words – the politician makes notes on what ideas of substance they want to communicate to the people and the writer “speechifies” it for them.
I have heard Harper is this way and actually writes most of his own speeches to draft form. He used to write Mannings, Deb Greys and others speeches before he became the one on the podium himself.
But, sigh, most politicians, like I sense Dion does, let the speechwriter come up with the first drafts and hence we get the blathering nothingness rhetoric that turns us all off.

Harper Critic Loses Lobby Group Job

OTTAWA–A right-wing lobby group once run by Stephen Harper has dismissed a senior staffer who is highly critical of the now-prime minister’s Conservative government.
Gerry Nicholls was executive director of the National Citizens Coalition until yesterday when, he says, president Peter Coleman informed him that “I was no longer part of their plans.”
“All I can say is I definitely did not quit,” said Nicholls, who said he was in a “state of shock” after receiving the news. “I’ve been there for 22 years.”
Asked if his recent denouncements of the Harper government’s free-spending ways had played any role in his departure – which the NCC denies – Nicholls said that because lawyers are involved in his talks with his former employer, “I really can’t comment, I can’t talk about anything.”
“It’s very frustrating. I did a lot of work there and I helped make the organization really.”
Coleman denied that Nicholls’ criticism of the Harper government had anything to do with the organization’s decision, saying it “was the kind of thing we actually encourage.”
“We would never muzzle anybody and if anybody in the Conservative party called me and told me to not say something I’d tell them to get lost, quite frankly,” Coleman told the Star.
Nicholls’ years at the NCC included the time Stephen Harper was president during the hiatus he took from elected politics.
As a Reform party MP from Calgary, Harper had disagreements with then-leader Preston Manning and decided not to run in the 1997 election.

Lorraine: Dion’s instructions to his speechwriter are simple: get me power, power, power. I too note a certain childishness in Dion’s remarks lately; he sounds more like a spoiled child who’s mad because he wasn’t invited to a party.
Their cheapblogs (pick substance over style)and Quebec radio spot are bush league.
Their election strategy seems just as childish – Harper is a liar, hypocrite, bully, etc.
Campaigning as being renewed won’t work either. Dionsky is a Chretienite through and through, thus the connection to Power Corp, who had two horses in the race last time. Ignatief was the new guy/outsider there. Maybe Libs thought they could pull off a Joe Clark.
As many have said before, the B team is in this time. Findlay tried to argue on Duffy tonight that Libs really wanted Dion all along (“it didn’t happen by accident”). I’m starting to believe there may be a dump Dion movement inside Lib party.
I smell an election in the air. NDP equally out to lunch. Their enviro critic, when faced with argument Canada only 2% of GHGs, replied, “that’s why we’re in Afghanistan.” Hint: NDP against Afghanistan.
If opposition keep re-writing bills, like Clean Air Act, so they become Bloc/Lib/NDP coalition bills, election inevitable. Electorate will care for 4.3 hours about who actually caused it. Can’t wait.
A speechwriter with some political history and insights would most definately tackle the reason for the Liberal’s fall from grace (AdScam etc.) with humbleness instead of trying to bury it by saying “that’s old news”.
Dion WAS THERE. So were many on his benches and the same old faces are in the backrooms.
Brown paper bags of money were given to TEN Quebec Liberal ridings that we know of. We just don’t know which ones. Therefore one of them could have been Dion’s. He was , after all, the Unity Minister and in charge of the very ministry that the Sponsorships were for.
If he knew nothing- then he was just a token figurehead for Chretien who plucked him out of the university and unelected and unaccountable to parliament appointed him minister then bribed a sitting MP with a Senate appointment so he could run in a safe seat in the next election.
If Dion knew nothing of what happened in his own ministry and around his own cabinet table how can he begin to think he could manage the country.
We don’t know do we.. the coverup of a “public inquiry” by Gomery eliminated any and all evidence given for that inquiry from use in any criminal court. So “exonerated by Gomery” actually means we can’t ever find out in a criminal court.
Dion has to address this head on like a man. Not like a shreiking teenager don’t you think.
