  1. Republicans demand investigation of U.N. climate-change agency

    Nine House Republicans Wednesday called for a probe of a United Nations agency that monitors climate change, citing reports of mismanagement.
    Members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, led by the panel’s ranking Republican, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (Fla.), asked the Governmental Accountability Office (GAO) to launch an inquiry into the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). An audit has shown that a WMO official misappropriated $3 million to finance a “money-for-votes scheme” before fleeing.
    Noting that the U.S. has given more than $115 million to the agency, the Republican lawmakers say GAO should examine whether any part of the American contribution was among the misappropriated funds.
    In addition, the GOP lawmakers called on the congressional watchdog to conduct a more thorough investigation of WMO — an audit of the audit, in effect — noting that a U.N. auditor looking into the situation had “reportedly been dismissed,” alleging she was prevented from fully examining the agency.

    Now that Mr. Lafleur is in custody one has to wonder whether he will make a deal to lessen his jail time (if convicted) on the thirty five charges he faces.
    Perhaps with the turmoil now at RCMP headquarters and the spotlight as well on the Quebec Provincial Police that a lot more attention will be put on just who in the Liberal party may have been involved.
    What a shame Mark Bourque the retired former RCMP officer from Quebec (assassinated in Haiti in Dec. 2005)is not alive.
    Apparently he had vast information on organized crime in Quebec garnered over many years.
    Interesting days ahead.
    One also has to pay attention to how much interest MSM shows in the story and how long it takes for the name Jacques Corriveau to get back into the the mix.

  6. So the Liberals have been caught in another lie. Wednesday, on the Lowell Green Show (CFRA), David McGuinty stated that the Conservative reneged on a luncheon for the 30,000 students at the Vimy ceremony. So, instead of confirming this, David McGuinty kept promoting this lie on the CBC this morning.
    The truth? The organiser called the Lowell Green Show this morning (Thursday). Well, this luncheon, while it was discussed with Veterans Affairs 2 years, no arrangements have EVER been made! So, the organiser fund raised these funds over the last 2 years.
    So did David McGuinty issue an apology? Nope – not a peep.
    I guess the Liberals are so desperate that they will fabricate lies and half truths.
    Such scum bags! First, to politisize this event and two, to blatently lie.

  10. Why isn’t SK stepping up to the plate in terms of attracting oil investment? Bring on the SK Party.
    I guess it really means that the AB perks to the oil patch are simply to low.
    Now the French giant, Total E & P, is talking about a $10-15 Billion investment in the oil patch. Out infra-structure/terrain/h20 is getting so far behind now it seems inconceivable to allow even more projects to come on line – spurred by the negatives in the Federal Budget in terms of capital cost allowance write-offs.
    Apparently there are something like 10 takers in line to develop bitumen processors as well as an interest to open up a whole new battery of sour gas wells just SW of Calgary. Not to mention a huge projected project in Ft. Mac.
    SK has a golden opportunity to open things up right now and it would be a good thing for both SK and the West if they go for it right now.

  14. Good Catch Catherine: CBC.ca still has the Mean-Spirited Veterans Affairs reneged online & we of course no how the CBC gets the facts & nothing but the facts.
    The organizers did in fact fund raise over the past couple of years, I was on the Exec at our legion when we rec’d a letter requesting help in the form of a donation for this venture. We supported the students from our city schools that were to attend with a donation. The students sent us a very nice thankyou & offered to help out in any way in upcoming Nov.11th ceremonies.

    I know this is hard for some people on the left of the spectrum to understand, but lies, evil, misery, and tyranny are the “equilibrium state” (pun intended) of humanity. Truth, goodness, joy and freedom take real long-term work.
    By all observational evidence, on balance, western society shows more evidence of the latter, and Islamic society more evidence of the former.

  22. Yeah, I heard David McGuinty on CFRA. And no, he didn’t apologize. He merely skirted and still blamed the Conservative government.
    You know, as he is a lawyer, he surely must know that he should produce the original government contract (agreement) that stated that these luncheons would be paid by the government. He produced the email that was sent to the coordinators. This email did not state the government agreed to pay for the lunches.
    I guess he is just a failed incompentant lawyer. You know, one of those ambulance chasers.

    This from a man so concerned about protocol that he opened his remarks with “Harper …” – not “Mr.” nor “PM.”
    This from a man who during QP almost daily hurls demeaning comments such as “arms dealer” at the Minister of Defence, a 30+ yr. veteran of the Canadian Forces.
    This from a man who accused General Hillier of being a “prop” for the Conservatives because the general dared to refer to the years of neglect the military suffered for 10+ yrs.

    On Sunday, March 25th , I allowed the liberal party and their candidate, Mr. Michael Ignatieff to use the hall in my parish. I was also asked to second the nomination of Mr. Ignatieff. I felt that this was an honor as the host and hoped that this action may heal the rift that existed between the Ukrainian community and Mr. Ignatieff’s. At no time was I doing this for any political or personal gain.
    I also did not take into consideration the political stances that Mr. Ignatieff has on abortion and same sex legislation. I categorically state here that my moral values are the same as the church I represent. I do not support same sex marriages, nor do I support any form of abortion.
    Unfortunately my actions were seen in the eyes of many as one of me supporting not only the political party but Mr. Ignatieff’s position as mentioned above. I do not support any political party and as I stated I do not support Mr. Ignatieff’s position on these matters.
    Please forgive me my brothers and sisters as I threw caution to the wind and didn’t consider the reactions of my actions. I promise in the future that Ii will support all eparchial statutes and canon law and hopefully never put the church in the same position as I did last week.

    got to go to the Vimy ceremonies.
    Lowell for many years has been a great supporter of veterans on his show and in the community (and of the CF generally–he was major mover behind the Wear Red Friday rally on Parliament Hill last fall). So, as he told his listeners some time ago, CFRA asked Veterans Affairs if he could be part of the official press delegation going to Vimy, with the intent that he would report back for a number of radio stations.
    This Monday Lowell said on his show that Veterans Affairs bureaucrats had turned down the request. Lowell did not give a reason (I suspect it was that the limited number of press seats on the official plane were restricted to the Parliamentary Press Gallery; a local, conservative talk show host was no doubt thought infra dig–however much he had done for veterans and the CF), and he did not complain much.
    Many listeners however were riled up and started contacting MPs, the PMO, etc. Just as the Monday show was ending Environment Minister John Baird (from an Ottawa riding) phoned Lowell and told him he was, after all, in. The power of the people for once.
    It took Lowell another day to make last-minute arrangements so that he could in fact go, but on Tuesday he announced he would be off. According to Lowell it was the PMO that had–to put it nicely–helped Veterans Affairs see the light.
    You might check the main CFRA website later this week to see when Lowell will be broadcasting.

  39. My theory on wither or not a Spring 2007 election:
    I think the sabre rattling by the Harper Conservatives (candidates in place, national campaign HQ booked, buses and planes on stand by, pre-election ads (like Martin and Chretien did BTW) running has the following short term end goal:
    -force the sitting opposition MPs to announce whether or not they are running again
    -force the opposition to quickly appoint or nominate candidates even though many may be just warm bodies to fill the 308 name slots
    -force the opposition to spend scare resources on counter-ads
    – force the opposition to come up with policy hastily scribbled on backs of napkins (or in Dion’s case plagiarize policies from various radical interest groups AND the Greens and claim it as their own)
    – force the opposition to carefully consider their opposition to any upcoming confidence bills as at least one party has to support each one or the parties voting against will be the bad guys who force the election
    – force various opposition MPs that want to keep their jobs a while longer to consider crossing the floor or sitting as independants (there are several who would dearly want to accumulate the 6 years of service to get full pensions)
    And then – call by-elections in those 40 or so ridings where MPs are stepping down before the next fall sitting of the house.
    This way the Conservatives continue to govern, could possibly get the 30 or so seats they need for a majority in the by-elections, then pass the fixed election date law and be in government until October 2009.
    Anybody think this is a plausible scenario?

    PM Harper is a great strategist & is making moves right out of the liberal play book, use liberal tactics & be ready at all times.

  48. I am ashamed to admit that I was on the executive of the Federal PC Women’s Caucus when Joe Clark was in office.
    The backroom shenanigans and power mongering that went on prompted me and others to rip up our Progressive Conservative membership cards.
    I can attest to the fact that many of those same PC power mongers simply shifted their arm twisting ways to Mulroney then to the Liberals under Chretien, then Martin and I see some of the same names behind the scenes with Dion.
    It is, to me , the strongest testament to Stephen harper’s credibility, morals and ethics that these same people did not even try to get into the backrooms of the new Conservative Party.
    In fact, we see some who say “former PROGRESSIVE Conservatives decry Harper, blah blah – these people were not Canada first people whatsoever. They just were involved in the party of power for personal gain.
    Now they think they have a new back door with Mr. Silly Putty in their hands Dion and the Liberals.
    Funny thing – Dion IS inviting them in.
