  1. I started calling it ‘star drek’ long ago.
the plot lines were repetitive and absurd.
space aliens fluent in english. oyyph.
‘data’ was one of the few characters with some interesting things happening because being an ‘android’ for him at least the plausibility was still within range.

  2. the aliens could speak english because of universal translators.
re casting classic trek characters is a huge mistake, if the story isn’t going to revolve around TNG, DS9, VOY, or ENT whose casts are all still alive and well as far as I know, they should make the story line about an entirely new set of characters never before seen in a star trek movie, or television show.

  3. This is a little like reinventing my youth, maybe my kids might enjoy it. They prefer reading my old science fiction books more though.

  4. The original Star Trek is the only Star Trek. The cheese is part of the charm. The other series were just a nightmare, they didn’t really happen. (And the original series didn’t have that “no money” bullshit, if I recall correctly — or what was that guy selling tribbles for, carbon credits?)
Matt Damon as Kirk? Sure, but only if he gets to have his head blown up at the end like his character in Dogma.

  5. Forget about Cap’n Kirk, Spock, etc… Cast as the inhabitants of the “Planet that gets blown up”, the Liberal Party.

  6. how about the CBC spinoff . “little mosque on Vulcan” where logic meets Islam. can two 180 degree cultures occupy the same bridge?
can a starship run with five obigatory prayer times?
which way is mecca in 4 dimensional hyperspace?

  7. Ha!
Star Trek, D & D and/or comic book fixations: Among the first things a forensic psychatrist will inquire about when evaluating a ‘patient’.
Finding that here is not really a surprise though is it.
Hey, can we start a thread about fantasy props and merchandise, I’m sure there are many communicators, 13 sided dice, and valuable No. 1 issues to compare notes on. Not to mention the closets full of costumes.
    Beam me up Scooter.

  8. “A world without money isn’t one I care to live in.”
    Um, sure.
“No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.” – Matthew 6:24
    Relapsed Catholic, indeed.

  9. If Tom Cruise (blech!) can do “Mission Impossible” then Matt Damon (yeesh!) can do “Star Trek”.

  10. The cast list gave me a bit of a double-take until I thought about it. Of course, Gary Sinise can play Bones – no question. Brody as Spock? Maybe. I don’t know that anyone since Nimoy has been able to pull off any Vulcan character on any of the movies or shows, so letting Brody try it can’t be much worse than what they’ve already done in the past. Faint praise, I know. Damon as Kirk is interesting. The more I think about it, the more I think he might be able to pull it off. He can do cocky, he can do the fights, he can be intense, he can work the ladies. What else is there to Kirk, when it comes down to it?
I’m willing to give that cast the benefit of the doubt – as long as they get Beyonce to play Uhura…

  11. cal2, LMAO! 🙂
add: “Cap’n! Cap’n! We canna take ’em any more! Either we transport ’em out into space or we’re gonna go mad!”

  12. Star trek did learn from their mistake of a non-capitalist society in DS9. The overtly capitalist ferengi, and the captain’s girlfriend was a trader. Just like our former communist societies they found that the world/universe can’t function too long without someone making a profit.

  13. Actually, James MacAvoy would make a pretty decent Spock. But Scotty??
On the whole, this is a bad idea. The characters are simply to iconic to recreate with different actors. Let it go…

  14. The campy/cheesiness of the first series was not as eveident in it’s day. In any case, the reason of the shows success in latter years was not the special effects and SF content, it was that each episode dealt with some aspect of human nature, often highlighted by the constant sparring between Bones and Spock. The following series tried to keep this premise going, with some success.
ST is my one guilty indulgence, when I finally gave in and got satellite I ended up with a lot of sleep deprivation from sitting up late getting caught up on DS9, Voyager, TNG, and later on ENT. 7 of 9 and T’oppal in their skin tight body suits didn’t really hurt either..
One of my favorite movie moments is when Bones realized Spock had mind-melded with him before he croaked and exclaimed “it’s than green blooded bastards revenge for losing all those arguments” – you could tell how many fans of the original series were in the theatre by how many people laughed out loud at that.

  16. just out of curiosity, howcum when theres all sorts of danger and action on the surface of the planet, el capitan hops into the transporter and gets right in the thick of it??? the CAPTAIN ??? engaging in hand-to-hand with the bad guys???
    ‘suspension of disbelief’. riiiiight…….
see what I mean about ‘star drek’? NO friggin plausibility on any count.

  17. “In case you were wondering, it was “fiction”, as in science fiction..”
As opposed to the Bible, which can be found in the Fantasy section of bookstores.

  18. LOL cal2
I’ll wait and see. I’ve seen some of the fan episodes on the web where they continued the original five year journey with fans playing the parts. They were actually REALLY well done! Good stories, cool effects. I was surprised. You could tell that they were made with love.

  19. Folks,
“Rebooting” a science fiction franchise has the potential for successful and satisfying outcomes: look at what was done with Battlestar Galactica. They took a whacking big ball of cheese and transformed it into a gritty fascinating examination of religion, race and class issues.
And Shaidle, admit it: if the Bishop of Rome were the Space Pope three centuries from now, you’d be all hot and bothered to push the One True Faithâ„¢ out to the whole galaxy ;=).

But only to the parts of the galaxy with money, apparently.
