At Wesleyan University, incoming freshmen are instructed to use gender-neutral pronouns in campus correspondence. As one person wrote on the university’s online Anonymous Confession Board, “I am usually attracted only to people of hir original gender, rather than hir intended gender. As such, I’m afraid that I’m, like, viewing hir wrong, or not respecting hir wishes or something.”

I don’t care for the dig at “leftists” or understand how they necessarily relate to university staff. However, the “hir” pronoun does seem to take political correctness a step too far. I should note, though, that in grad school, professors encourage students to use “her” and “she” as much as the male pronouns.

There’s one leftist professor I’m aware of, in women’s studies naturally, who does not allow her students to use the word ‘history’. Instead, they must write ‘herstory’. That shows not simply the bias of the ‘professor’ but also her extreme ignorance. The word ‘history’ comes from the Greek ‘historia’, which means ‘story’. Nothing to do with gender.
By the way, technically, the noun ‘man’ as in ‘man’ and ‘mankind’ is gender neutral. That is, it has a leveled meaning, one which is general and refers to all examples of our species, of whatever gender. And, one which is ‘marked’ and refers only to the male gender.
Therefore, using ‘he’ and ‘his’ in the unmarked sense quite validly refers to human beings irrespective of gender.
The extreme focus on gender definition denies the equality of gender – but, feminists aren’t terribly keen on logic anyway.
In most professional correspondence it is, typically, advised that you maintain a gender neutral stance; the reason for this is that you quite often don’t know who you’re writing to. Now, the use of the ‘hir’ pronoun is remarkably foolish because the English language already has words which can replace gender-specific pro-nouns with gender-neutral pronouns (the main one being ‘one’). One would assume that someone who has achieved the education necessary to instruct university students in academic correspondence would already be familiar with the ‘one’ pro-noun replacement.
Liberals are an interesting type.
For a group that states they abhor labels, they are certainly going to great lengths to try and create new ones.

People don’t have a gender. Words have a gender. A persons sex is male or female. A words gender is masculine or feminine, which has nothing to do with maleness or femaleness. In French and German and probably other languages all nouns have a gender (la/le, die/das). In English they don’t.
One of the new PC speaks speaks that I can’t stand is talking about a persons “gender” when you mean sex.
Lets gender fix this word

Ok lets get rid of the man part = Wo,
so lets make it more gender neutral like Hir = Ho.
Do all the men and Ho’s agree.

The left through politically correct deconstrution of the meanings of words and the intent of laguage to convey factual description, ARE devolving the glue of western thought.
