  1. reminds me of a big bad biker I knew who got on his harley and could not figure out why he was not moving – back wheel was lifted by double kickstand – looked like a complete idiot

you know, those backlit plastic toys that you would put cartoon disks in that gave a remarkable stereo view of the story. consisted of about 10 or 12 panels. then you would pop in another one.

  3. speaking of goings on in the ME, didja read the latest ‘Foreign Policy’? feature article ‘who won in iraq?’
index says it all: “the [george dubya] white house estimated that the iraq war would cost $50 billion. today, its closing in on 10 times that amount. and those are just the costs we know about”.
    tqvm rummy rumsfeld.

  4. These must be what Martin, Goodale, and other liberals wore when looking for leaks in their departments.

  5. These are not night vision goggles nor has the picture been photo-shopped. The man with the lense caps on his binoculars is the current Israeli Minister of Defense (Amir Peretz) observing military manoeuvers beside his new IDF chief of staff. This photo has been widely published all over Israel and the world. Here’s the BBC account.

And yes, Peretz is that big of a pin head and an old time leftist.

“reminds me of a big bad biker I knew who got on his harley and could not figure out why he was not moving – back wheel was lifted by double kickstand – looked like a complete idiot”
Find me a picture of a big twin HD that has a double kickstand, and I’ll show you a photoshop job. having had a few over the years (many)Try to pull 700# + onto one. Something smells with that comment.

  7. Lord Nelson used a similar trick – holding the scope to his bad eye. “Signal – I see no signal” and then he attacked and won.
Shiites, – I see no shiites.

  8. It is a mesh screen designed to block sunlight from glinting off the lens and creating a sniper target. If you look closely you can see faint wrinkles of the fabric on the left lens.

  9. Amir Peretz, — leader of the Israeli Labour party in 2006, and former union leader. To be fair though he was wounded at the Mitla Pass in the Yom Kippur war and spent a year in hospital. . . maybe this is why he got wounded?!!?

  10. I have to agree with Gideon. Those are anti-glare fabric covers on his lenses. Because one glare can ruin your whole day if a sniper is looking for targets.

  11. if there were lens covers on the binocs, it would take about 2 seconds for the chap to realize this, then drop the specs down and rectify.
on the other hand, a pic in bright sun takes about 1/500th of a second.
    do the math.

  12. The “glare cover theory” is weakened by the fact that other pairs of binoculars of apparently identical model lying on the bench in front of him clearly have lens caps that have been removed.

  13. I wonder why Peretz gets the fabric covers, and the other guy does not. Plus the guys behind them with shiny sunglasses don’t appear to be worried about snipers.
From my own experience, I have used night vision devices (also called ‘binoculars’; I can’t remember the specific manufacturer but there are several) that in almost all respects are the same as standard binoculars but contain extremely sensitive image intensifier tubes (IIT) that must not be exposed to sunlight or intense artificial light that would cause damage to the device. Lens covers are therefore required with a small hole in each to attenuate sunlight. These holes are tiny and would be too small to see in the photo.
Also relevant here is that these kind of binoculars are useful for viewing details otherwise obscured within strong shadows resulting from direct sunlight, as is probably the case from looking at the photo.
It’s impossible to confirm from the photo what the model number of the binoculars is, so there’s no way to tell for sure (and maybe Peretz is indeed a klutz). Daytime use of such an NVD – if that’s what it is – does appear silly to anyone who is not familiar with that kind of gear, but it is effective. Be assured that when the shooting starts the guy with the training who uses his kit properly will be the one who gets the last laugh. In this case I’d tend to laugh at the photographer.
The more I think about it, it’s even possible the photographer did know but also figured that this would get a laugh from most people. The BBC article uses the term binoculars, which isn’t a lie if it is indeed an NVD. Check out snopes for photos of Clinton and Bush doing the same thing.
