If the world’s largest and most successful democracy is not our ally, what does that say about us? Do Canadians really wish to parrot arguments generated by Iran or its sympathizers? The Europeans have huge racial problems on their hands, most recently demonstrated in France – a country that supported Saddam Hussein, do Canadians really believe that’s the way to go?

  3. I hope the writer is wrong in his assesment of the booing of team USA. I think is is a sign of respect of their ability. My take on the event can best be explained by the Alberta rivals in the NHL. There is no love lost between the Oilers and the Flames. Each teams fans watches with glee as the other team loses to ANYONE. This is because they are the closest rival and the greatest danger. Away from the sporting arena though each city(country) would come to aid the other in a difficult time. Just as Canada did after 9/11 and Katrina.

    There is no hypocritical “Canadian Value” that is more unattractive than America-bashing. The simple fact is that Canadian “prosperity” and defense are dependent on America. I don’t mean to imply that Canadians need accept or agree with American politics or policy at all times without question, but there is a big difference between civilized diplomatic disagreement and being just plain crass.
    While I am a proponent of free-trade, I was astonished to see that BC Gas was sold to a Texas -based energy company recently. My chagrin was based upon the irony that in order to “enshrine” and preserve Canada’s “cherished social programs” and “we are not American” identity, anything is for sale including strategic natural resources (and in the future that means oil and water).
    My question. What does Canada stand for? Beer and popcorn and BS?

    You look at all these things — together with flat disposable income and near-zero productivity growth — and you have to wonder how we let ourselves get to this point.

  7. I don’t know about you, but I’m embarrased. I’m not a hockey fan (my idea of a good hockey team is one which just filed for bankrupcty), BUT, this is a sporting event. It isn’t politics. If people want to rant and rave at George Bush, fine, that’s what he gets paid for.
    This sort of behaviour has no place in sports of any kind.

    The truth is, the big, rich kid next door is too tempting a target. Saying that, I thought youth hockey was about sportsmanship. Try the stuff with my beloved Flyers but, keep the kids out of it.

  10. It isn’t excusable, but I wouldn’t read too much into this one. After all Vancouver fans booed Martin at the Grey Cup.
    Canadian fans are not used to the US coming in as favorites (Canada had way more turnover this time)
    But yesterday’s boobirds were reacting to the elbow to the head provoked by the empty net goal. He should have been thrown out of the tournament or better yet sent home by his own coach.

Is it any wonder that the Americans tell us to go home when we visit their country? They are our neighbours & we should at least respect these young men for that. This shows just shows our own ignorance & pettiness.
    We shouldn’t take our politics into an arena where young people are playing a game that they & we both love. It is this kind of behaviour that makes me ashamed to be a Canadian.

Frankly I think freedom, economic success and true patriotism scares the hell out of them so they justify their mediocrity in these items with infantile name calling of an acheiver….how very “soviet”.
    I recall seeing a documentary on the rediculous anti-American nationalism of cold war USSR pravda….quite humorous, but then pravda had a captive audience similar to Can-con media…the soviet ruling cabal denounced every US success as “immoral decadence” or “the immorality of capitalism” and every soviet failing economically or in civil liberty of as “the neccesities of morally correct culture” …the paralells to the current political anti-US jibbering from Canada’s ruling class left is too remarkable to dismiss as coincidnce.
    When we see Joe “molson” at a hockey game unconciously regurgitate media indoctrinated political dogma in the form of Anti US chanting, we can see we have to have a real long objective look at Canada’s national personality and the media forces that propose to mould/reflect that national character.

  15. The booing started way before the tensions that spilled over from the Canada/US game. The U.S. was getting booed from game one. I think Bazoo has it closer to the truth, and the fact that the Americans come in as the favourite. I was at the U.S./Russia game, and sat close to the U.S. bench. Near the end of the game, when Russia had the victory in hand, an American threw a borderline cheap shot/body check at a Russian player. I shouted what I thought at the time — hey, why don’t you guys lose with some class! An American sitting in front of me turned and said, “you know, you Canadians sure have a lot to learn about class.” Well, he was right. I embarrassed myself, and am embarrassed as a Canadian hosting this tournament. I recall that incident in Quebec with the 12 year olds, and thought at the time it was pretty disgusting. Now, I am no better. Caught up in the moment? Yes. Excusable? No. I would like to add my apology alongside Peter McMartins, and am now going to sit in the corner and feal shame.
    A further note to Vancouver fans — when they play the national anthem of another team (in this case Russia), you stand, remove your hat, and show some respect for the other country. You do not sit. You do not talk. You do not leave your headwear on. You do not walk out in the middle of the anthem.

To any Americans reading this, feel my shame and accept my apology that your young hockey players had to endure this.

  20. When I was a kid in Saskatchewan, we often played raucous emotional hockey games against neighbouring towns. People booed. They yelled. They tossed garbage cans onto the ice in anger at bad calls. In summary, people went crazy. And special bile was always saved for the bigger towns that always had better teams.
    However, when the shit hit the fan in the real world, you could always count on the neighbours to help out. I’ve never understood why people take these things so seriously. It’s a sports rivalry. Think Yankees-Mets. It even happens within the same city.
    Surely Kate, you can think of a few similar Arcola-Kisbey-Carlyle parallels. To me, this is no different. It just looks bad because it’s on television and it’s wrapped in flags. But it’s still just sports.

    Booing and chanting is part of the entertainment and excitement at a sporting event. Taking the bait of a journalist is naive but tying the Liberals to this is more absurd than funny.

  22. Please, let’s not forget the economic policies of the US that are not helping relations, especially the lumber situation in B.C. That is probably more the root cause then any war.
    While I don’t condone booing children, the US has made itself very unpopular because of it’s economic policies. Here in the prairies the wheat subsidies and the new tariffs to protect their subsidized grain/corn industry is going to shut down many Saskatchewan Farms.
    I would not boo the kids playing, but the American ambassador came out here, I may be able to find some cheap eggs�

This is also not quite like ABC (Anyone But Calgary) hockey hysteria but some stupid attitudes cultivated by the anti-American zealots that blame the USA for everything. I see Spectator thinks that these hockey players personally started the softwood lumber brewhaha.
    I used to like the Joe Rant until I listened closely and all the diversity/peacekeeping crap started to stick out like a sore thumb.
    Oh yes, is there any subject that Ron cannot twist into a conservative bash? If he hates us so much why is he still around? Okay, I understand he is on a waiting list… for a Lieberal daycare spot or senate seat, but then I repeat myself.

    These kids probably know very little or nothing about the issues that are causing tensions between the US and Canada.
    To behave in such a vile manner towards a group of kids regardless of their origin is disgusting.

  27. I to, was disgusted with the Vancouver crowd, booing the American team. Maybe they where reacting to the cheap shot on the Canadian player, but get over it. That was another game, not this one.
    With the Liberal Gov’t anti-US attitude, it’s soft stance on terrorism, where they let know terrorist stay in the country, no wonder the Americans are going to reguire passports from Canadains a year from now. This little episode, will not re-enforce they’re attitude about us being good neighbours. And Really…I can’t say as I blame them.
    We need to get rid of the Liberal trash in Ottawa and start fresh mending fences, with the best neighbour we have.

  28. This is where the march of the Trudeupian penguins has taken us. When I was a kid we were still British then we became a country of two founding peoples. Then we became a multicultural nation. This being a bit too much of wispy concept for the average Canadian voter the Trudeaupian’s decided to define what a Canadian is by saying what he is not.
    Ok fair enough, but what kind of fricken moron would choose the USA, most successful country in modern history to be contrary to? A country that we depend on, for both our physical and economic security.
    Trudeaupian’s have managed to elevate “free” healthcare as Canada’s proudest achievement. Congratulations, we are now a nation of worry free hypochondriacs! (Get it? Worry free hypochondriacs. The joke’s on us.)
    I suppose that if the American hockey team was actually playing for the other team we could all rest assured that both Five Fingered Svend and Hot Cross Hedy Fry ™ would be dragging those vulgar mouth breathers in front of the Human Rights Commission, for suitable castigation.
    I apologise to those young American players. Most Canadians are not so despicable. But I’m afraid that too many of our ruling class, are.

  30. Yeah I know, I heard the boobirds during the game and couldn’t figure what was going on. I thought maybe they were booing (#3 I think) because of an elbow or something done to the Canadian team the day before.

  33. Very low class but not at all unexpected from the left and useless. I cheered every time the Russians scored because I wanted to see a Russian Canadian final, period. I watched the game with two Americans and they asked me why I favored the Russians and my explanation was accepted. What was not accepted was the old USSR attitude displayed by the Canadian crowd. I hope those taunting the US were unemployed in the soft wood or beef industry.

Pathetic is the word for Canadians that boo Americans, especially when playing the Russians: Russia is a scary place right now: it is effectively a dying tyrannical oligarchy with nuclear weapons, awash with resources. NGO’s have just been effectively banned in Russia by the President for Life Putin. This type of website (critical of the government) would not be allowed in Russia. If the Americans behaved in Iraq like the Russians in Chechnya, there would be hundreds of thousands Iraqi’s dead (and I mean really dead, not just propaganda dead).

  36. That is quite sad. I am an avid hockey fan, and I can, and do boo and cheer at respective times. I cheer when my team (whether Canada or Calgary or whatever) makes a good play or scores a goal. I boo when the ref makes a bad call or when Calgary makes a bad play. It lacks class, as someone said to boo at the Americans out of spite. I don’t think it compares to the Calgary/Edmonton rivalry. I do agree that I love to see Edmonton loose, it is part of being rivals. But it is a friendly rivalry and I have good friends from the place. I have nothing else against Edmonton and I do not bash it up at every chance. I save it for the game and joking with my friends. These fans too it way to far. Hockey is not about politics.
    I too am ashamed at what those fans too. I add my apology to those already posted.

  38. Martin announced yesterday that the Liberals plan to lure foreign trained doctors to Canada to help address our (government imposed) doctor shortage.
    In keeping with Liberal values Martin gave no consideration to the impact of this selfish and immoral policy upon the people of those less fortunate (doctor exporting) countries.
    Given the abundant resources with which we are blessed Canada should be exporting doctors.
    Among our blessings is having the world’s best neighbour protecting our ass and opening its markets to us -even as we look down our increasingly longer noses at them.
    It is the opening of such markets, something the Liberals opposed -and not Martin’s vaunted management -which turned our economy around.
    Americans liberate and protect. Canadians boo the world’s liberators and their protectors.
    Pathetic and embarrassing.
    The problem of what happens to a country under the siege of Liberal-socialist values may soon play itself out. IMHO if these ethics challenged Liberals are re-elected it will be a race between Quebec and Alberta as to which one leaves first. This will be an awful price to pay for the unthinking acceptance of so many of our fellow citizens of “Liberal values.”

  42. It’s about the good ole’ hockey game. Years ago Canadians regularly boo’ed the mighty Russians back when the only international hockey contribution by the U.S. was a fluke gold in 1980. Fast forward to today – the U.S. has grown into a formidable hockey power…one with American “dream team” chips on their shoulders and gold sparkels on their skates.
    I don’t necessarily view any negativity against a team of American golden boys as being directed for them being Americans. Rather, it has more to do with how we perceive Team U.S.A.’s ability, attitude and lofty expectations.
    This is hockey. Canada’s sport. We are fiercely competitive, infinitely loyal, and have attitudes and lofty expectations stronger than Americans or any other nation of hockey wannabees. Don’t bother forgiving or apologizing our bad behaviour. We just don’t have any room to accommodate good behavior for the competition.
    BTW, most of us don’t have Joe as a name, BUT BY GOD, HOCKEY IS OUR GAME!!! GO CANADA, GO!!!

  48. when I was young ,in elementary school we were taught not to boo, I taught that to my children and keep that rule for the teams I coach.
    The Canadian values then we very British, politeness and a sense of fairplay, tempered somewhat from the the Brits sense of superiority to the colonials.
    Now our multicultural values seem to include rudeness, smugness ,entitlement and a loss of the former.
    My poor grandfather – to think he fought for this embarrassing mess of a country.

  50. Okay, totally OT, but perhaps appropriate, sent to me by my mom, a FORMER (there is a GOd) Liberal:
    CHOOSE WISELY!
    While vacationing on a ranch, Paul Martin gets thrown from his horse, lands
    on a rattlesnake, gets bitten and dies because the emergency room at the
    nearest hospital is too understaffed to treat him in time. So his soul
    arrives in Heaven and he is met by St. Peter at the Pearly Gates.
    “Welcome to Heaven,” says St. Peter. “Before you settle in, it seems there
    is a problem. We seldom see a Liberal around these parts, so we’re not sure
    what to do with you.”
    “No problem, just let me in; I’m a believer.” says Martin.
    “I’d like to just let you in, but I have orders from the Man, Himself. He
    says you have to spend one day in Hell and one day in Heaven. Then you must
    choose where you’ll live for eternity.”
    “But, I’ve already made up my mind, I want to be in Heaven,” replied
    Martin”.
    I’m sorry, but we have our rules.” And with that, St. Peter escorts him to
    an elevator and he goes down, down, down, all the way to Hell.
    The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a lush golf course; the
    sun is shining in a cloudless sky, the temperature a perfect 72 degrees. In
    the distance is a beautiful clubhouse.
    Standing in front of it is his Dad, and thousands of other Liberals who had
    helped him out over the years—Pierre Trudeau, Jean Marchand, Pelletier, St
    Laurent etc. The whole of the “Left” was there,
    everyone laughing, happy, and casually but expensively dressed. They run to
    greet him, hug him, and reminisce about the good times they had getting rich
    at the expense of ‘suckers and peasants.’ They play a friendly game of golf
    and then dine on lobster and caviar.
    The Devil himself comes up to Martin with a frosty drink, “Have a Margarita
    and relax, Paul!”
    “Uh, I can’t drink anymore, I took a pledge,” says Martin, dejectedly.
    “This is Hell, son. You can drink and eat all you want and not worry, and it
    just gets better from there!”
    Martin takes the drink and finds himself liking the Devil, who he thinks is
    a really very friendly guy who tells funny jokes like himself, and pulls
    hilarious nasty pranks, kind of like they pulled on the GST and Free Trade
    promises. They are having such a great time that, before he realizes it,
    it’s time to go. Everyone gives him a big hug and waves as Martin steps on
    the elevator and heads upward.
    When the elevator door reopens, he is in Heaven again and St. Peter is
    waiting for him. “Now it’s time to visit Heaven,” the old man says, opening
    the gate. So for 24 hours Martin is made to hang
    out with a bunch of honest, good-natured people who enjoy each other’s
    company, talk about things other than money, and treat each other decently.
    Not a nasty prank or frat boy joke among them; no fancy country clubs and,
    while the food tastes great, it’s not caviar or lobster. And these people
    are all poor, he doesn’t see anybody he knows, and he isn’t even treated
    like someone special!
    “Whoa,” he says uncomfortably to himself. “Pierre Trudeau never prepared me
    for this!”
    The day done, St. Peter returns and says, “Well, you’ve spent a day in Hell
    and a day in Heaven. Now choose where you want to live for eternity.”
    With the ‘Jeopardy’ theme playing softly in the background, Martin reflects
    for a minute, then answers: “Well, I would never have thought I’d say this
    — I mean, Heaven has been delightful and all — but I really think I belong
    in Hell with my friends.”
    So St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down, all
    the way to Hell. The doors of the elevator open and he is in the middle of a
    barren scorched earth covered with garbage
    and toxic industrial waste, kind of like Sudbury. He is horrified to see all
    of his friends, dressed in rags and chained together, picking up the trash
    and putting it in black bags. They are groaning and moaning in pain, faces
    and hands black with grime.
    The Devil comes over to Martin and puts an arm around his shoulder.
    “I don’t understand,” stammers a shocked Martin, “Yesterday I was here and
    there was a golf course and a clubhouse and we ate lobster and caviar, drank
    booze. We lazed around and had a great time. Now there’s just a wasteland
    full of garbage and everybody looks miserable!”
    The Devil looks at him, smiles slyly, and purrs, “Yesterday we were
    campaigning; today you voted for us!”
