Someone Knew

StockHouse web portal pledges anonymity;

Stockgroup Information Systems Inc. said Thursday it will protect the anonymity of contributors to its online bulletin board while the RCMP investigate a possible leak of income trust policy.
The company noted that two postings on its StockHouse.ca BullBoards appeared on Nov. 23 saying that Finance Minister Ralph Goodale would “soon announce a reduction on dividend taxation to ‘even the playing field’ ” with income trusts.
Those postings appeared before Goodale announced after the close of financial markets that income trusts would remain free of corporate tax and that taxes on corporate dividends would be cut.
Stockgroup (TSXV:SWB), which describes the StockHouse.ca portal as Canada’s largest online community of active investors, said it has yet to be contacted by the RCMP.

Thanks to Maz2, in the comments.
I’m on my way out of the house – if someone can track down that stockhouse.ca page (if it still exists) and save a screencap, or better yet – the source code, it might be a good idea.

  1. notice halfway down the editorial article the link to posts and the forum. amazing what you can find and where….

  2. >it will protect the anonymity of contributors
Not after IMET shows up with a warrant, they won’t.

  3. What I’m interested in is saving the source code (the background html) of the page that has the actual posts mentioned in the item, posted on Nov. 23.
    Gotta go.

  4. Quote “Bruce Nunn, Stockgroup’s Vice President of Marketing, said, “Protecting the interests of the StockHouse BullBoards community is vitally important to our company” end quote
Got it, screw the law, Stockhouse is in it for the money!

  5. I have been allover their site, the original posting is still there along with the history of the message board. You can also view the history of the person making the post (Screen name Zonimoni). He/she continues to be active, with posts current to today. The post in question is headlined “scuttlebut” and uses the “level the playing field” phrase which appeared in the Goodale announcement.
I have no idea how to save a screen cap or source code, but I suspect someone else here will. Happy hunting!!!

  6. As I recall the discussions of the 23 of November, there was much speculation, quoting of bits from ROBTv, and re-hashing of Ralph Goodale’s statements from the time he hit us with a 20%+ reduction in net worth. But to say that someone posting on the discussion board KNEW, is a bit of a stretch.
Since an election was in the offing, there was much speculation, (And angry denouncing of Mr Goodale and his comments. For example – ‘75% of all submissions favour taxing [that would be ADDITIONAL taxing] of Income Trusts’, and a statement from the Liberal benches in the House of Commons that ‘Income Trust owners have no constituency’). This arrogance resulted in his E-mail box exploding at least once, and possibly twice under the deluge of protest from senior citizens again suffering the distain of the Liberal Government, and from other equally outraged investors.
Many throughout the investing community spoke and speculated on the matter, including insightful remarks by Susan Prince (ROBTv) – as much as two weeks earlier – that it was unlikely RG would risk the ire of thousands of Income Trust owners by changing the rules just before an election.
If a contributor to that particular discussion group KNEW – as in having been informed personally by someone that should not have divulged such information – that was not evident in any of the posts.
Such information may have escaped – and trading patterns certainly suggest that is the case – but we did not see anything except speculation and repetition of comments made by various persons speaking on ROBTv and writing for, or quoted in, the business sections of MSM.
Apparently, the members of the discussion group – predominately independent-thinking risk takers not relied upon by the LPC for blind allegiance and financial support – are not among those who enjoy such patronage.

  7. Just going through the thread (interesting) and this comment looks even more suspicious:

Posted at 17:48 EST. Comment is:
“Rumour is tax phased in on trusts beginning 2007, along with changes to dividend taxes – being talked about on ROBTV right now.
Also rumour about taxing foreign owners. Levels of tax adjustments not known. I need a drink”
Personally, that’s quite alot of information for a rumour and I wouldn’t say it is something that investors could “guess” at….

  8. To save web page source code HTML.
Bring the web page up on your browser.
    Click on View.
On the drop down menu click on Source.
    It should open in Notepad.
Highlight and save the contents…This is the DHTML code Kate requested.

  9. New at Captains Quarters:
Another Liberal Scandal On The Horizon?
A source within Canadian political and media circles informed CQ earlier this afternoon that the media will break a story on an almost-forgotten scandal involving Options Canada, where $4.8 million disappeared without much oversight from the Liberal government in 1995. The money came from the Heritage Canada office, which disbursed the grant in three rushed payments on the eve of the 1995 referendum on autonomy for Quebec. The Ottawa Citizen reported in 2000 that the Liberal government had buried the scandal and closed its investigation without ever determining what happened to the millions of dollars given to Options Canada, which later merged into the No campaign on the referendum:

  10. O/T….Just Out!
Another Liberal Scandal coming up? Have a look at the latest from Captains Quarters. Also i wonder when the MSM is going to pick up on the scam uncovered on the blog Conservative Life regarding Public Works Relocation Services…Money doled out to resorts, spas, golf clubs etc in Hawaii, Florida, Calif, etc. NICE! 2.25 BILLION spent on relocation in two years…give me a break! That is ALOT of relocating. This needs to be audited!

  11. Saying someone “knew” is a bit of a stretch. I’m not saying there wasn’t a leak – but you can find speculation for almost anything.
People stating their predictions as fact is common for investment discussions..
Saying these posts or comments actually proves something is “confirmation bias” – which is a pretty easy trap to fall into.

  12. I must say the earlier comment is fishy but it isn’t necessarily the smoking gun. The comment at 5:48 PM EST was far more indicative of a leak. However, the announcement was supposed to come out at 5PM EST but it looks like on some programs it still wasn’t out at 6 PM EST. Does anybody know when the official announcement was made EST?

  13. AlW thats OK when i went over to Angry in the GWN he already had a post up.
This is the biggest reason the MSM hates us, we make them look like the inconsequential little dolts that they are.

  14. Read the Bloomberg story.
“Canadian Finance Minister Ralph Goodale will say later today that he is leaning against imposing a tax on income trusts as part of his review of the tax treatment for the high-yield securities, a person familiar with the plan said. ”
This reporter was clearly told the content of the Income Trust announcement ahead of time. The story was *last updated* at 16:14 on the day in question, 45 minutes before the announcement was made.
Who was the ‘person familiar with the plan’? Am I crazy, or is there a gun beginning to smoke here?

  15. Clive;
That Bloomberg piece is very very leaky.
It doesnt get any leakier than that.
I think ralphie is in doo doo.

  16. I’m surprised…..everyone here is good at doing research but no one has used file->save before?
I saved a copy Kate, but I didn’t see anything incriminating really. It looks like the beginning was edited. Let me know where you want it.

  17. RCMP don’t launch criminal investigations on the say-so of an opposition MP. There must be more for them to act. Note I’m not saying they will lay charges, but this thing smells. There is a consistency here, and I’m not talking about Liberal scandals. What I’m referring to is the habit of Liberal politicians to chirp “don’t blame me, I’m innocent, I’ve been exonerated.” Maybe they should be saying they will cooperate with the investigation, asking the public to withold judgement. That would be prudent. The don’t blame me approach betrays poor leadership.

  18. If this keeps up, I may eventually conclude that a few key members of the Liberal Party might have some explaining to do.

  19. quoted from the stockhouse site: “In any eventuality [shold the RCMP contact us in their investigation] our policy is not to release the identity of the person or persons who posted pertinent BullBoard messages unless the courts order us to do so” -By Darin Diehl, Publisher of Stockhouse in his note page at: http://www.stockhouse.ca/shfn/editorial.asp?edtid=18011.
there is no hope any of us should the lieberal nazi’s win. when is my apartment going to be raided? i’ve got hours of observation occurring from parl.gc.ca. yikes, the fear is beginning to take hold. don’t tell me they aren’t capable of doing the dirty.

  20. AIW,
The Public Accounts Committee has already called the Auditor General to audit the relocation contract. Problem is, this “relocation services” uncovered at Conservativelife is something new. The MSM has been contacted but everyone is scared to touch it.
    Why?

Time is of the essence. Discretion is the better part of valour. Do it now. Say the right thing or at least intimate the right intentions. Now. Many of your teetering Liberal colleagues’ seats depend on it. Z

  22. old squid,
You say the MSM is scared to touch it? I wonder why. Perhaps Kate or Andrew with their connections could find out more. This should be front and center for voters to see.
    Are you listening KATE?

  23. there are ways to fish the names from Stockhouse. Im not adept enough to do it. but I have seen it done and names posted.
you can always message box the Zonimoni guy directly if you are a member.who know , he may respond.

  24. A lot of this evidence may be circumstantial…but if a private citizen had been brought before the courts with such evidence (not only of this but of everything that has come out before and since the election call), they would’ve been tried, convicted, and within the federal prison system by this point.
If somehow the Liberals get end up with a majority government, I’m going to buy a Liberal party membership…I figure if everyone else is getting rich from knowing a few well-placed Liberals, why not me?

  25. I don’t know… I read all the surrounding threads and as much as I’d like to say it was incriminating, there doesn’t seem to be that much other than a lot of bitched out investors. The title of the Thread, “Skuttlebutt” added to the comment certainly add’s to the mystery. It does look like the dude making the comment heard from someone, who heard from someone… etc. So I suppose that’s a little fishy, but what’s there in and of itself is not nearly for sufficient to launch an investigation… The RCMP must have a lot more we don’t know about. I’d say the guy who made the comment is probably going to be chatting with the RCMP whether he wants to or not.
Kate I emailed the code for the comment to you.

  26. There is no question that there was a leak and that it was acted upon. This happened the day before the US Thanksgiving holiday. Us stock desks would be virtually empty. I watched these companies spike on huge volume in the last hour of trading., with the US closed the next day, this was an obvious trading annomoly. Some have speculated that the market anticipated that the government would increase the dividend tax credit.
Not!!! This was certainly the prefered outcome but it was far from anticipated. Who expected a Liberal to do whats right? Most players were betting on a income trust tax, hence the distruction of trust values. As well, the announcment came 6 weeks earlier than was told by Ralph. The SEC can pull trade data of the final hour and identify all the buying. Thats where the smoking gun resides.

  27. I have no relevant info to provide only this.
When s*&@ hits the fan it is never evenly dispersed, this is going to be fun to watch where and who it hits.
    Get the popcorn honey!!!

  28. Any chance youll stop playing the angry, righteous victim role when the Conservatives win the election and finally shutdown this blog? There was some indication, when posting on here was getting sparse, that you were going to close up shop.
I wonder if another blog will then cite this comment and suggest that there was a leak about the closing of small dead animals?
If you dont shut it down can you at least change the picture of the rotting gopher in your title bar? Glimpsing at the picture while enjoying the site with my morning coffee almost makes me lose my breakfast.

  29. Black is furious, angry, not deleted yet. The answer to Black’s leading question is: he did not have to tell you. Also Goodale used “driven”; who is the driver? Surely not Bruno? Was Bruno seconded by Ralph? Is Bruno in Martin’s circle?
Nasty bloggers; nuisances. How dare you? >>>
Black, whose friendship with Goodale goes back 20 years, said income trusts were mentioned at the meeting, but Goodale didn’t say what the government was going to do.
“What he said was, ‘I may be driven to dealing with this before the government falls.’ That was all he said. We didn’t say, ‘Gee, what are you going to do?'” Black said. “Do you think he would have told us?” >>

  31. CBC Now Knows the Names of the IDA Execs in Meeting With Ralph Goodale
Here are the names of the IDA directors and executives who attended the November 23, 2005 meeting with Minister Ralph Goodale. Larry Elfords letter has finally flushed out all the following names into the public realm. I wonder why it is that the IDA was not willing to release these names in their reponse letter to Larry Elford and to the public immediately after it became known that the IDA meeting with the Minister occurred. The IDA is a self-regulator to whom the provincial securities commissions delegate over 99% of individual investor complaints on malfeasance by investment advisors. Can individual investors not expect that their main investor protection agency behaves better than what we have just observed in this income trust scandal.
