I’ve signed on for the duration of the election campaign with the CBC, writing at Election Roundtable, which isn’t so much a blog as it is a discussion page between five bloggers of varying background and ideology. I believe I’m there to represent the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy. That’s what they’re going to get, anyway.
Expect about a post a day at the forum – I’ll let you know when they appear for your reading convenience, but they won’t be crossposted because of the nature of the agreement. Otherwise, my other blogging should remain unaffected.

Update – The reviews begin to roll in, and it seems that some of those on the left have jumped to the conclusion that I’ll move to foreign shores if the Liberals win the election.
It reminds me that the largely confusing nature of leftist ideology may actually be rooted in poor reading comprehension. One would think that a line that refers to the tearing up of the country would tip off even the most stubbornly resistant remedial reader about what I meant.

May I forward a suggestion? Though your analysis is correct, it is still dour, and you have how many weeks to go on this gig? Be a conseravtive with a smile on your face, and if Martin does what we know he will, say in the last two weeks of the campaign, then bring on the pessimism and anger.
You have a wonderful chance to spread some sunshine, debunk myths,gently poke the other side, and can turn up the heat as time goes on.I just wouldn’t want it to turn into a one note Coulter harridan spectacular.I will never say no to reading about how overtaxed we are, and why Harper needs to cut rates across the board, and that sure can be a central theme of this campaign,using it dramatize the statis embedded in the Liberal agenda.
The CBC invited you because they hope that that will show that they are not the “Mouth of the liberal party” but only an instrument of policy.
Frankly, as far as I am concerned, the CBC is only good for playing classical music and bringing that to Canadians. I can not stand the sight of Mansbridge or Van Dusen anymore. Scotty, Pulleez beam me up!

Second comment. After reading your post again I suddenly realized what struck me the first time. Mark Steyn could have written it. He writes with an edge and a dash of class too. The other columns pale by comparison. Actually, there is no comparison.
BTW, do they limit the number of words you can use? Most columns are limited in length so as to fit in the space alloted to them. Old copy editor question.
Steyn wouldn’t have used the word “successful” twice in one sentence. That’s the only thing that I really don’t like – no ability to go in and clean up little grammatical errors after the fact.
There is no limit on the posts, but there is a general guideline of 100 – 300 words.
I don’t count words, so they get what they get.
Kate, you go girl…great post and blog by the way, and I like John’s comparing you to Mark..he’s the best we have but you’re on the rise, keep up the great work

Forget Adscam and Itscam, forget childcare and the GST, forget beer and popcorn (and, while we’re at it, will someone please tell Angry to forget Andrew Stronach) — this is the real turning point of the campaign. The liberal-left will be so pissed off to find out that their tax dollars are going into Kate McMillan’s pockets that they’ll surely all vote for the Conservatives now, just in the hope that they’ll shut down the CBC so that nothing like this can never happen again.

I finally got around to reading your piece “The UnCanadian”.
Although I haven’t been a Westerner in a long time, you know what? We’re not any different when it comes to feeling left out of Canada by those who have hijacked this once-great nation of such immense potential for their own personal advancement and purposes.
I lately wonder if the Liberal-left even cares at all about Canada. It seems to me they just refer to Canada for political purposes. Their interests are completely selfish. It’s all about themselves and those who help them keep their power and keep other peoples’ money rolling in nonstop. It’s about them washing each others’ hands using your water and my soap. Without permission.
I myself fear for federal unity should the Liberals once again be returned to power, even with a minority, by Ontarians. I hope Ontarians, however, finally have an epiphany and surprise us all.

I think your post on cbc.ca was brave. The cult of anti-Americanism is a growing cancer. A month ago I ironed an American flag to the shoulder of my winter coat because I am tired of anti-Americanism in our country. All of those young Americans dying so that Iraq can have a democracy, and all most Canadians can do is sneer at them. And why is President Bush so disliked here? Can’t people disagree on policy and not fall into a collective and childish personal dislike? Canada is almost like high school and the popular kids have decided that since George Bush isn’t going to tow the popular line, well then he’s just on the outs.
I think most Canadians just don’t understand how dangerous the world is. I think most Canadians live in a fantasy world. An example to that is the opposition to missle defence, but more broadly, I think that most Canadians really think that the world is just like us and don’t like the United States doing things (i.e. fighting lots of bad guys all around the world) that remind us that this is not so.
We live in a safe, prosperous country, and that is partly due to the military power and economic dynamism of the friendly country right next to us.

It’s hard not to believe that our two sides can’t live together in harmony. I just think our fundamental differences are too many. Perhaps I’ve oversimplified it here, but it seems to me you Right wingers are clinging to the past; you want to go back in time as it were. And we Lefties keep trying to reach for the future; we embrace change more openly. Forgive me if this analogy is flawed.
Unfortunately for us we all live in the present and therefore both sides are miserable.

I begin this first post here with my dismal expectations of this federal election campaign and accompanying debate fully realized. That old and favoured Canadian political horse, hide flailed beyond recognition, has once again lurched obediently to his feet in anticipation of a renewed flogging.
At this point, I stopped reading.This is nothing other than the rant of a bile-filled harridan who couldn’t manage a smile if her life depended on it.

How long before the brain drain to countries such as the US? Until the next Liberal party re-election, that’s when! Hold it! There’s already a massive exodus going on: doctors and entrepreneurial types of all sorts have been leaving en masse for quite some time. This has been the pattern world-wide over the past century. As socialism hits a certain “critical mass” vis a vis taxation and over-regulation, people(and capital) flee.
As I will once my kids are adults, assuming this once-proud country does not right itself (pardon the pun).
As the election has unfolded so far, it has been surprizingly strong on issues (driven by CPC) and the LPC reactions have clearly defined the differences in “values”. I cannot accept any of the so called Canadian Values of the LPC so I guess I’m an unCanadian as well.
I also agree that if the LPC forms governemnt, the dismay amongst many will be very strong. Personally, I am unwilling to have my country espouse such “values”; therefore, we will need to create an international boundry between the prsiries and the ROC.
Ontario can have it’s LPC Canadian values along with the East. Quebec can go off and live in its own resources in completely Francophone poverty.
We can go on and make a country thgt truly reflects the values of Western Canada.

Anyway I’m not a big fan of Paul Martin either, I’d much perfer Frank McKenna. But I’m not an idiot like Warren Kinsella, I still support the party because I know the party is more than its leader. The silver lining for me if we don’t get a majority is maybe both Stephen Harper and Paul Martin (And Jack Layton if we’re all real lucky) will get the boot.
Maybe then you guys can get more balance between the old PCs and the old Reformers, we can get some new life and revitalization, and the NDP can get a leader who doesn’t have a silly moustache. 😉

But maybe think a bit more about the audience. When you write at SDA and the WS, your audience are generally literate and well read people who can appreciate complex concepts and rational thinking, presented in a condensed and succinct manner. In other words, most of the audience speaks the same language, and have a similar world-view.
A CBC website will have a generally different audience, many of whom may find libertarian and conservative concepts foreign to their thought process. They’re not stupid, just victims of years of spin and bias.
What do you think of maybe “dumbing it down” a bit?

Good arguements on the brain drain phenomenom which the Liberals love to deny exsists. I have some ideas on it that may seem a little bit more extreme. Nontheless, in the mid-seventies an ultra communist group named Kmer Rouge overthrew the government of Cambodia. Upon seizing control they set out to essentially dictate the way the new society would think. This meant ridding the population of educated people who would be a threat to thier cause.They resorted to mass genocide of the best a brightest citizens of Camodia. Children were seperated from thier parents and put into institutions where they could be reprogramed (Liberal daycare ?!?). The Liberals appear to be employing a similar strategy, less barbaric albeit. They simply set people up for failure in worthless post secondary institutions, burdening them with so much debt they have no choice but to emmigrate. All that’s left are complacent sheep.
