You all better sit down.
I’ve signed on for the duration of the election campaign with the CBC, writing at Election Roundtable, which isn’t so much a blog as it is a discussion page between five bloggers of varying background and ideology. I believe I’m there to represent the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy. That’s what they’re going to get, anyway.
Expect about a post a day at the forum – I’ll let you know when they appear for your reading convenience, but they won’t be crossposted because of the nature of the agreement. Otherwise, my other blogging should remain unaffected.
The first post is up now. Let me know what you think.
Update – The reviews begin to roll in, and it seems that some of those on the left have jumped to the conclusion that I’ll move to foreign shores if the Liberals win the election.
It reminds me that the largely confusing nature of leftist ideology may actually be rooted in poor reading comprehension. One would think that a line that refers to the tearing up of the country would tip off even the most stubbornly resistant remedial reader about what I meant.

    You’ve expressed sentiments that have been bouncing around in my head for years. Like you, I don’t know if I am Canadian anymore. Just this morning I was musing about how great it would be to own an American passport.
    Perhaps it’s just an outgrowth of the pessimism I feel regarding the willful blindness of the electorate. That the Liberals are still in the lead in practically every poll, but particulary in Ontario, give me little hope that Canada will change any time soon.

  16. I think it is disgusting that Martin should revive anti-americanism to get votes. I am sad that the US is playing his game. Look at Martin’s history with the US. It is he that has no problem giving our sovereignty to the US–no, I am not anti-American, but I am Canadian and our sovereignty means much to me. Martin is playing Canadians like a fiddle–and Bush is co-operating. Why is that so hard to see? Read the Security and Economic ‘agreement’ that Manley is promoting–it removes the border and any sovereignty we have. We won the battle but will lose this war–and Martin is complicit. By all means keep trade open–but do it honestly, not with rhetoric to get votes from sheep-like Canadians.

    I am disappointed that you have opted to share your talents with the CBC. By virtue of the fact that you are under their bright red canopy, they can now claim that their historical tilt is a myth. Indeed, while Mansbridge now lurches even further to the left, you will be displayed as the poster child that proves the poison broth is balanced.
    As for the writing, it is too intelligent a bludgeon. My recommendation is that you draw upon your rural charm and write at a Grade 9 level. Remember that your audience is now different. You should not be preaching to the choir, but gently challenging calcified viewpoints.

  24. There seems to be a misconception among some of you that I’m refering to this being “one of my last elections as a Canadian” in the personal.
    I think that reveals a naivette about the depth and strength of so-called Western alienation – which has come about in no small part as a result of this continuing message from the Liberals that we are no longer “Canadian” enough and are to be feared and despised because of it.
    While the fact that 6 Canadians “vote with their feet” for every American who chooses to move here – I suspect that a great many more would entertain staying put, and telling central Canada where they can line up to begin trade negotiations for our rather plentiful natural resources after the divorce becomes final.

    I like the divorce analogy as well. A clear case of spousal rape in which the marriage counselor is complicit for advising plaintiff to, “…lie back and think of Canada.”

  29. Good for you Kate. I’m proud of you. Strong column. I respect your style. Somehow though I don’t think it’s going to help much. I’m still in the preparation stages of doing my part to support an Alberta referendum for separation. When that time comes it’s going to shake up a lot of people in central Canada. Albertans are not like Quebecers. I hope Sask and BC will join us. Somehow I don’t think BC will though. I live in the Lower Mainland at the moment and I can’t believe how many people I know out here, who voted Liberal last time, are saying they’re going to vote NDP this time.

  31. I tell people that this election is win-win for conservatives out west:
    1. CPC elected, hopefully results in more responsible, representative government for us
    2. Libs re-elected…leads to further growth and unification of western separatist groups.
    A little simplistic maybe, but its how I stay optimistic. Canada is a leaky ship, and we can either patch it up, or get in our lifeboats and get outta here.

    You weren’t exactly asleep. I’m glad you are getting exposure on the CBC,where Liberal spin reigns supreme. Such exposure will help to open the minds of some who are fed the same crap day after day.
    I was interested in the arrogance of the “Charter of Rights Liberal”- only Liberals can be trusted with the Charter. It’s rather curious that he doesn’t believe in rights for Iraqis. (Or perhaps he’s unaware of what life was like in Iraq under Saddam. If he gets his news from the anti-liberation MSM he can’t help but be misinformed.)
    Keep pounding away at the immorality of the Left/Liberal position on Iraq and point out that, as well as bringing democracy and the rule of law (real, domestic law)-to be contasted with (effete)international law- the war to liberate Iraq has saved lives even as it’s being fought.

    Although leftists blame the U.S. for the imposition of U.N. sanctions it was not sanctions but the refusal of Hussein to comply with the terms of the ceasefire which caused these deaths.
    Liberals swooned over the charismatic boy President who allowed this situation to persist throughout his term. Liberals would have allowed this situation to continue indefintely. They are the last people who should be parading as champions of human rights.
    You should invite these leftists to do the math:
    Pre Rescue-Mission Deaths (24 Years- 1979- 2003)
    300,000 in mass graves + another 300,000 disappeared + 500,000 infants dead b/c of malnutrition divided by 24 = 45,833 unnecessary deaths per year.
    Post Rescue-Mission Deaths
    5,000 innocents killed by coalition forces + 25,000 killed by terrorists ( al Q and domestic)
    divided by 2.5 = 12,500 deaths per year.
    Liberals are incensed by the death of 12,500 people per year in the fight for freedom but not the least bit bothered by 45,000 being slaughtered per year to keep a dictator happy.
    Liberal values, Liberal math or both?
