    Everyday now this election the Liberals put their foot in their mouth.
    So how come the MSM doesn’t make a bigger deal than it is? How come the MSM talking heads aren’t claiming the Libs are now toast ’cause their people keep opening their mouths all wrong? I remember in past elections, the slightest slip of the tongue on the Conservative side was enough to torpedo their chances of winning. The MSM certainly saw to it, making mountains out of molehills.
    Fact is: the Liberals are running the worst, most crappy campaign I can remember. Makes Turner look like a winner.
    The Conservatives have run a very good campaign so far. No gaffes. Plenty of great policy announcements. And there’s no “peaking too soon”. Why haven’t the MSMers noticed this and said so? Hmm…
    I think the polls are also to be taken with a grain of salt. We’ve seen pollsters being way off before.
    As for Martin ignoring the Prairies in favor of BC, how come the MSM isn’t running clips of folks declaring the Liberals have “written off” the West and are therefore a threat to national unity? The MSM had a lot of fun doing this to Reform. Why the double standard?
    Nevertheless, the MSM’s underestimation of the Conservatives is a good thing. ‘Cause the MSM is so often wrong.

  7. No poll that fails to indicate the percentage of undecided voters and the percentages among likely voters is worth much attention.
    For example, if Liberals lead 44-28 in Ontario among decided voters, it does not look so one-sided if the undecideds are 60% and the decideds are heavily weighed with youths under 25 who are unlikely to vote.

    Agree with the man and his decisions or not, but you’ve got to admit that his verbal aphasisa can be entertaining. Personally I stop and studder when I can’t think of the proper word. George makes up words. It’s most enterainingousness.

    My response doing the recalculation…..
    Take Not David Herle’s numbers and recalculate percentages based on intention to vote…if they hold true then you end up with
    Lib 31%
    CPC 35%
    NDP 15%
    Bloc 15%
    Other 4% (threw that in)
    Plug those numbers into the Hill an Knowlton predictor….no wonder the libs are pushing hot buttons.
    They lose 50 seats in that model, hold a redoubt in a couple of van seats and one vic seat, Goodales seat, couple in Winnipeg, some one in windsor, couple in Guelph (although I think those are well under threat now) Toronto, Belinda loses her seat, couple in ottawa…gosh less than 10 seats in Quebec and the atlantic rump stays but is diminished.
    If those numbers are true the CPC ends up with 133 seats,
    To survive libs need wedge issues to get their base going or they will sleepwalk to a slaughter.
    If the base shifts anymore they are in real trouble
    Actually, I think I prefer this for the moment…If the latter results where the real polling numbers the Liberal base would get excited….let them sleep….

  15. Thank you, Stephen. Finally some intelligent poll analysis. This tells me that conservatives should be organizing a precision full-court GOTV effort in close ridings, even using volunteers from other ridings that are not expected to be close.

    Harper’s speech went unreported at the time and sat unnoticed on the council’s web site — with Harper’s first name misspelled as Steven — until an opponent of his social policies began shopping it to reporters on Wednesday.
    That opponent pointed The Canadian Press towards the speech on condition he not be identified.

  19. Now isnt that a little silly….the media agree to keep a source hidden for doing their work for them. Esepecially when one of the professional rules of sources is that you should disclose if they source has a clear interest in the hidden disclosure…i.e. an obvious opponent….holy cats it could have been Jack Layton based on the description (I dont believe it was Jack by the way)
    Sloppy, the source should have been stated. Anyway BOO…Harper was scarey and he is scarier now because his agenda is hidden…better now than later….I will take this as more proof the liberal war room thinks Harpers smooth campaign to date is scary.
    As for the polls…yup, assuming that the poll numbers for Not David Herle are right it provides back up to the anecdotal that CPC is motivated.
    Tell All your CPC friends, especially in Ontario and BC to vote in advance polls and not risk the weather on voting day.

    Or more recently and very relevant in my opinion, but covered by absolutley no one Scott Reids comments to Don Martin of the NP that “Alberta can blow me” in regards to the traditionally low Liberal polling numbers in that province.

  21. Anyone know the date of the speech? Any one able to track down a PAul Martin or jack Layton speech from that date….Somehow I think you’ll be able to find a contradiction to a current position in there…Almost 100% guaranteed.

    LOL!! Okay, this is my first post here but that reminds me of the 2000 elections (I’m an American). I’m one of those “broken glass” Republicans who would crawl through broken glass (the pundits said) to vote against the Clintons.
    Maybe someone can come up with some witty Canadian equivalent, perhaps “broken snow plow Conservatives,” or “dead battery Conservatives,” or, “Where in the #*@( are my mitts Conservatives,” LOL!
    That last idea is thanks to my kids. I have bought so many hats, mittens, etc. etc., and they lose them, so in a pinch, I gave them the adult hats, gloves, etc., and they’ve managed, over time, to lose those too.

    Murray, that is exactly what won the 2004 election for George Bush.
    When you have friends and neighbors showing up at your door, smiling and telling you why they’re voting for so-and-so, or calling and doing the same thing, it makes a huge difference.

    Ambassador David Wilkins is far more of a polite, courteous gentleman than his predecessor, the rather acidic former Governor of Massachusetts.
    I agree wholeheartedly with the concerns Ambassador Wilkins raised about attempts by some Canadian politics like PM Martin to drag Uncle Sam into the election, then to make defamatory accusations against Uncle Sam and Americans who wish to hold Mr. Martin accountable for his smart-aleck remarks.
    Canadians realize there are very, very few Americans who actually appreciate and love Canada. Unintelligent and misguided trash talk from the Prime Minister about the “bogeymen” in Yankland may cost Canada some of its few remaining friends in the land of the red, white and blue.

  29. No worse than Raymond Chretien’s clumsy attempts to get Al Gore re-elected. And as one of the pundits on Duffy reported, there’s always Paul Martin’s little red book of 1993 with oodles of promises that never materialized. Plus, I’m sure you’ll find a speech of his somewhere to the banking community full of how the Liberals will ensure popcorn and beer for every canadian from cradle to grave. Wonder if they have stakes in Orville’s? You know they’re desperate when they have to dig up something eight years old.

    This is what the pollsters don’t want to take into account. It’s the human variable they cannot measure. Betcha Peter Loewen’ll come on now and defend the sanctity of the polling firms and the polls…
    For the record, I’m ignoring the polls this election. I have real reasons for doing so. After all, it IS possible, notwithstanding Peter’s past protestations, that pollsters could be manipulating and b.s.ing. I believe it’ll be to no avail.
    If people don’t feel like voting, they won’t go vote Liberal. But people like you and me who badly want to get rid of the crooks will go through any kind of hell to vote. Conservative, of course!

    Jim Travers wrote something up today in the TORSTAR that Harper has to throw a knock out punch. Sounds like Jim is afraid of not getting that senate appointment now.
    When a media elite starts offering advise to Harper when he doesn’t need it, you just know the liberals are out of ammo and are desperate for something.
    I also had a great laugh out of watching Countdown last night and seeing the panel with Joy Mcphail, Goldy Hyder(sp?), and Thorin (can’t remember her last name from team martin). You could swear that Thorin was about to lose it, she was shaking so bad. I was on the edge of my seat waiting for another b&p comment. Joy was absolutely enjoying the moment and Goldy was pressing all the right buttons. The liberal war room must be a disaster area right about now.

  35. Keep an eye on Sheila Copps. On CPAC last night with Lawrence Martin, she outlined in detail how she was trying to track the $1.4 million the Libs have returned to Canadians. It was a long, circuitous route she was forced to take, with grudging co-operation to outright stonewalling, but the bottom line is, the taxpayers paid themselves back, she thinks. I imagine she’ll write it all up in her next Toronto Sun column, though I don’t imagine we’ll see it anywhere else.

  37. Fox news on Sirius did a quick Q&A with a Liberal apologist yesterday regarding Martin’s spanking.
    I can’t remember the guys name, but he stuck with the tried and true Liberal stategy. He lied.
    The interviewers weren’t exactly buying it.
    It’s nice to see that Fox news is noticing how our whiney brat Liberals comport themselves.
    I’d be quite happy to see them take more interest in this election. It’s time more Americans knew how the Liberals like to use them as a whipping boy.
    Then there might be some interest in doing a story on Power Corp and the Oil For Palaces program or how the only way to become PM in Canada is with the blessing of the Desmarais family. The list goes on, CSL, the Gomery whitewash, Maurice Strong….
