Emmanuel Macron has pledged to to cut the amount of nuclear electricity in France from 75% to 50% by 2025. Will doubling wind and solar keep the lights on?

FIFY.
Aren’t French progressive Marxists a wonder to behold? Even id there is no one to surrender to, they will find a way. You can bet that when the rest of France suffers without power, these librul pukes will be sopping it up and living in luxury.

Captcha doesn’t seem to work very well unless you cross fingers on both hands, making it hard to type)
I guess if a country wants to go down hill fast with a fascist like Macron, they are heading in the right direction. Beautiful landscape given up do to wind turbines and solar panels what a real shame. Another country down the tubes with costs they can’t afford!!
A heat wave in France or a cold wave in the UK would be far more lethal than terrorist strikes.
Why is relative risk so hard to understand?

No it wouldn’t. France would be irresponsible to attempt anything so foolish and I don’t think they will. They are fortunate that previous planers had the foresight to invest in nuclear, I always thought their system of small nuclear stations was what other countries should be aiming for. If over 90% of their electricity is generated by low CO2 emitting sources, why is that a bad thing?
Macron seems to want to emulate Ont Liberals who have a similar “problem”. The “problem” is that leftist ideologues have decided nuclear power, clean, green carbon free, efficient and cost efficient isn’t “renewable”. Because of other connotations having to do with earlier “ban the nukes” crowd, green zealots also hate nuclear generated electricity. Go figure.
France and Ont could with a stroke of a pen declare their nuclear stations to be a green source better than a renewable, a new term could readily be invented. They could then trumpet the positives of their energy sources; Ont over 78% from clean, green sources.
Instead Ont at least has wasted billions on wind pipe dreams that can never provide reliable cost effective power. If France follows that route they are sorely misguided, maybe they should have considered this before voting.
Camels will just love scratching their backs against those wind towers and solar panel pedestals.
As they say, touché.
Well seeing as how they are going with the seventh century goat herder thang who needs electricity?
Martin, you have hit on the central paradox of AGW. What this shows is that for the warmists their dislike of nuclear is stronger than their claimed desire to reduce CO2 emissions. Patrick Moore has made this point many times, which is a central reason why he so despises the organization of which he was once the leader.
Unicorn Fart(tm) will keep the light on in France. Unicorn Fart(tm) is 100% Gaia friendly, 100% renewable power source. Accept no substitution.
Maybe they’ll have to buy dirty “brown coal” electricity from Germany but at least, like Germany, they’ll be safe from tsunamis.

They’re against hydro as well; and that also shows their true colours.
[Bruseles CLAU]
A little more background here. France exports large amounts of electricity to its neighbours including the UK that draws a steady 2 GW. And so one cosnequence of this action will be “stuff you” to good neighbours. And as others point out, the most relaible way to cut CO2 emissions is via nuclear power. For me, greens are genuinely concerned about emissions (albeit likely misguided) and are pro-nuclear. Folks like Hansen, Lovelock and MacKay. Greens (with a cap G) are effectively anti-humanity and anti- environment and are against any forms of sensible energy production that provides comfort and prosperity. Now to run the gauntlet of the Captcha 🙁
An idiotic solution to a non-existent problem as a distraction to conceal a clueless president ignoring an immigration policy leading to replacing French history and civilization with seventh century theocracy and Islamic supremacy.
And the same paradox will hit every idiot that thinks buying an EV is the good – right thing to do to save Mother Earth…
WHERE will the power come from eh.??? to charge up 500,000,000 EV’s in North America alone.??
Hydro is pretty much tapped out with much of what there is available under contract to the US.
Wind and solar are hopeless – expensive – useless JOKES.
THAT leaves NUCLEAR…be it fissile or what I believe to be the answer for sustainable unlimited electrical power: Liquid Salt Reactors using Thorium as a fuel.
Regardless the CO2 impact (which I believe to be trumped up BS), the Green Peace’s of the planet will NEVER go along with it will they…..drowning our planet in Imbecilic ideology instead.
All of which shows their limitless hypocrisy, does it not?
Between uranium and thorium, there is sufficient fissile material on our planet to provide nuclear power beyond any foreseeable future regardless of how much is used. The only shortage will be invested capital in plant, facilities and personnel to transform the raw fuel into useful electricity.
Andy, yes, they are indeed opposed to large hydro. The US green activists point with great pride to shutting down of dozens of dams.

Euan, the basic thrust of it is that Britain is importing full time the equivalent of the full annual production of two large reactors. So in effect all that Macron is doing is confronting Britain with the full hazards of relying on someone else to produce a large chunk of your electricity. Not to mention depriving France of all the revenue from exports.
Nothing to worry about … the Muslim “immigrants” will burn cars in the street to keep warm. More Muslim “immigrants” will replace the Nuclear Power … 1-million Muslims in the street = 1-Nuclear Power Plant
Nihilism is the apt term for Pres. Macron’s statement, given the negative implication for Europe’s economy.
It beggars belief to realize the two largest economies on the European continent are being run by nihilists.
Both leaders, besides being childless, express no confidence in their own culture or nation.
Macroun’s and Merkel’s immigration policy risks turning them into Germ-Arabia and Frankistan.
Those who have just voted for Macron and soon to vote for Merkel should not count on a future economy strong enough to make their voters pension payments.
Thanks for some more clarification.
Steakman, where have you been for the last hundred years. Everyone knows that the electricity comes from that little funny face hole in the wall of your house. So what’s the problem? Sarc? 😉 And just think all those cars are going to be plugged in during the off peak period.
Clearly a blithering idiot. Unless he owns shars in a pixie dust mine.
Sorry, you can only keep the lights on with solar energy during the day. Kind of pointless, eh?
I was in France in 1984 and drove by a nuclear power station that was one of the first in use. (1960??) I was amazed by the noise free and smoke free atmosphere, save the buzzing of the transformers that are more audible than ours because of 50Hz AC power.
For years we’ve known that any nation that looks to the future will have developed nuclear power. What a joke and a show of ignorance for Macron to even contemplate reducing that power. This is what fake news have overlooked when reporting on Macron’s pipe dreams.
